    Hi folks

Just to clarify a few questions around why the target amount to raise was €100k. It was €100k because that is what we need minimum - its actually more than that. We have annual platform costs, hosting, staff and general operating expenses.

How did we pay it before we hit that number? We have money in our bank account from loans that was used to cover the gap between what we raised and the total cost of next years sub - this was done on the basis that we will pay it back through monthly ad revenue. Future funds generated via subs and ad revenue will be used to pay back the delta and ongoing operational costs. People are asking for copies of invoices etc which is not possible so we wont be sharing anything like that. However, as I said in my message we got a much better deal so here we are…

Paid members v's non paid members. Paid members still won't get served any ads. We will also be arranging a get together in the new year and hopefully extending whats included in a sub beyond the ad… I am working with Mike on that. We still need to bridge the gap so thanks again to all of you that subscribed so far and continue to do so. If anyone would like to subscribe now that you know we have a runway for another 14 months at least.

I put in my message that I will share a plan around the future and how we get there - I still need to finish that and get some input but its work in progress and will be with you shortly.

Platform - I had a call Monday night with Vanilla to to through design issues on mobile and a few more minor issues. Hopefully we are a couple of weeks away from migrating then which should clear up a lot of the issues.

Anyhow, still its a good result and lets plan to make sure its something we can keep going into the future.

    Thanks, Odhran

Can I make a suggestion that the big red box at top of page now be removed, or reduced in size. If you are a user you see exactly 1 thread on the home page on mobile (see screen below) which has to hurt engagement...

Even when your a member it is still visible except on the private sub forums. @dulpit The admins said they wanted still visible for all. I have an extension that hides it.

The admins said they wanted still visible for all.

Yes, but that was months ago. Any chance they could make it collapsible, at the very least?

Or update the message to something more up to date at the very very least.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

If the red banners at top aren't updated, is it possible to update the keep boards alive site at least? It currently still looks like the site is in imminent chance of failing, which isn't going to entice any new user to sign up, is it?

I hope the Boards team takes full advantage of this lifeline and puts their full effort into doing the necessary work on the website.

I say this with all due respect, but a lot was lost and a lot has been iffy since the vanilla migration.

I’m not sure if it is a lack of knowledge of the vanilla software from the team or what, but there is a lot of things on the website that I’ve noticed is half-baked. These small attentions to detail that was there in previous years is what made this website more palatable than major social media platforms.

As a software developer and sysadmin myself (and having previously worked with Vanilla), I know that some of these things were VERY basic to convert from vB to Vanilla. The issue is, now that it’s been a few years, it could be challenging.

My advice would be to look to the past to see what’s missing today. Of course Google’s SEO changes is a major burden, but if more people stay on Boards via Google rather than bouncing, it will do a LOT.

Wishing the team all the best and I’m delighted that a solution has been found for the short term.

Looks like they edited the message to just a subscription link today?

I see some functionality has returned, with tables being resurrected again, which is a relief for me as I need it for my update threads!

I am finding that stuff is hidden behind other things, in case people hadn't noticed it yet or its in the process of being fixed.

Is there a valid plan to either recover lost members or gain new ones ? Or understand why people left ? There was a good thread on this.

Modding has returned to the same entrenched personal views that were evident before boards hit the nuclear button. Probably expected as it's the very same people again.

If I remember correctly, the hierarchy were to look at this in recovery position. The open thread citing issues with the site thread repeatedly mentioned this but clearly it's just the same. Anecdotally I don't see the main page number of new threads increasing.

I reckon the begging bowl will be out again in 18 months. It's a pity as I thought the inward looking open thread when the site was on the edge had some good points but clearly it's same all over again.

I’m delighted to re sign up for a year. The modding in the Russian war on Ukraine forum was infuriating. But they finally banned Brickster whose Pro Putin’s stance in the face of war crimes was sickening. Has he sprouted up under another guise. It seems so. But at least enough action was taken that I could feel okay to support the forum.

I’m delighted because I wanted to support this great resource. Looking forward to renewing in a year’s time - Boards Abú!

To be honest I have no problem paying for boards. When I look at all my saved threads and see how much I have saved on mobile phone bill, broadband, electricity, uk pension, amazon deals, nowtv, iptv - then the weather forum is super with MT's forecast - also tv program recommendations, when things are renewed etc, all at your fingertips.

    Long may she sail!!

    I subscribed, keep boards alive!!

Has some update been applied? Things look different, pages seem to take an age to load properly and glitches, text seems smaller

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,452 ✭✭✭corkie

Haven't noticed anything different on mobile or desktop!

Did your device browser get updated or something?

Vanilla where running tests last Friday?

This is on desktop, no updates

The new comment box is showing 14px text but posts are using 13px now, I had an exclusion for the right side nav which stopped working and there is a random white box appearing on pages sometimes (like 100px or so high)

    Wrong thread...

Well, we’re near the end of 2025 and I now have to copy and save my posts to Notes before posting because the pile of sh1t that is Vanilla is incapable of functioning as a forum platform - link function not working, text styles not working, post comment not working. I have lost so many posts over the last few weeks that just disappear.

Will 2026 be any better? Don’t hold your breath.

(The clusterfnck of text styles above is an example - if you give text a style, you cannot revert back to it’s previous style).

Rarely use text styles other than for partial quotes and pasting images. Lemme check here, Chrome on the desktop FWIW

    • Bold, not bold (Used Ctrl+B to change style and change back)
    • Itlalic, not italic (Used Ctrl+I to change style and change back)
    • Strike through, highlighted section, picked strike through do-hickey
    • Can't seem to find underline
    • Can't find spoiler formatting
    • Can't find text sizing
    • Can't find text colouring
    • Code, copy and pasted in, highlighted section, picked code do-hickey, yuk… loses formatting, rolls lines together

    main()
    {
    printf("Hello world, TGIF!");
    }

Original unformatted here, leading whitespace lost by Vanilla

    image.png
    • Links seem ok
    • Pasting in some HTML also seem workable if not brilliant

Yes, vanilla is a very common flavoring for sweet crepes, often added as vanilla extract to the batter, but "Vanilla Crepe" is also the name of a popular Malaysian dessert chain known for its layered mille crepes (thin pancakes stacked with cream). Essentially, a crepe is a thin pancake, and vanilla makes it a classic sweet treat, whether served plain or as a fancy mille crepe cake. Key points about vanilla crepes:

    • Basic Crepe Batter: A simple crepe batter includes flour, eggs, milk, and butter, with vanilla extract and sugar added for sweet versions.

    • Can't seem to use whitespace on the first row of a table, ok outside from that

    Table1,1

    Table1,2

    Table 2,1

    Table 2,2

Tabs work ok to get new row

Changing column widths with cursor works but is a bit clunky

    • Pasting tables in from Excel works

    1

    blah

    2

    blah

    3

    blah

    4

    blah

    • Paste in "Some stuff from Word to check out text size, text font, text colour and text background" (Nope, see image of original below!)
    image.png
    • Undo and redo with Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y work ok

Don't think I'd be trying any of this on my phone, plain text all the way for me there given small screen and chunky fingers. Copy and paste is a bit annoying in that it always starts a new paragraph which makes it a pain for editing

What platform and browser are you using? I've no doubt some are going to be better than others. While I'm likely to get my head blown off for this, I think the editing in Vanilla is ok and probably quicker than vBulletin once you know its limitations. Copying and pasting images is much much easier, as is inserting media. Of course it would be as this is where the chargeable cloud storage gets racked up.

Pasting starting a new paragraph would be the biggest pain for me, if I was on a coding forum the broken coding formatter would be next. Edit, code formatting actually ok when you save the comment, just looks crap in the preview

Fair enough, I know diddly squat about all things Apple. Sounds like Vanilla support is pretty weak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,645 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

There is no Vanilla support. The company is virtually dead. Yet Boards continues to pay them - for what?

    Absolute madness. 🤯

Be interesting to know the breakdown of platform usage for users here. Windows desktop, Apple desktop, Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook, Linux variations etc.. More generally, we see the following breakdown (apologies for the unverified AI dump which should not be treated as gospel)

For overall operating system usage (all devices), Android leads significantly, followed by Windows, then iOS, but for mobile-only, Android dominates with ~72% and iOS has ~27%. Windows is strong in desktop/laptop (around 30-70%, depending on source/device type) but very small in mobile. Market shares fluctuate by device (desktop, mobile, tablet) and region, with Android & iOS ruling mobile, while Windows & macOS lead desktops. Overall OS Market Share (All Devices)

    • Android: ~44.5% (most popular OS overall)
    • Windows: ~27.4%
    • iOS: ~15.9%

    Mobile Devices (Smartphones & Tablets)

    • Android: ~72%
    • iOS: ~28%

    Desktop Computers (Laptops & PCs)

    • Windows: ~71% (leading)
    • macOS: ~16% (second)

    Key Takeaways

    • Android's Dominance: It's the world's top OS by volume, especially in mobile, notes this Wikipedia article.
    • Windows' Desktop Power: It remains the king of PCs, though mobile usage is tiny.
    • iOS Strength: A strong second in mobile, but far behind Android globally.

Personally, I'd truly love to be able to ditch Windows 11 but as a developer for desktop, this where my market it is so it wouldn't be feasible. I think for a lot of commercial software, Vanilla included it seems, support for Apple is patchy and not prioritized.

I think the reasons for staying with Vanilla are that another migration would likely cause a ton of issues, the resources to do a migration don't exist and the deal that was as arrived at with Vanilla had a substantial discount.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,645 ✭✭✭Gloomtastic!

Of course there was a substantial discount, most of Vanilla’s user base has already left.

    Hi all,

We are working away on improvements to the site in the background, there is not much to update but I wanted to touch base here so that we all know where we stand.  We are still looking at comments and suggestions in the thread here and gathering all feedback. Having these comments and suggestions coming from the community is invaluable. It allows us to get a feel for the current user experience and how/ where we can make improvements.

As everyone is aware, we are changing the hosting platform within Vanilla Higher Logic to one without any third party customisations. These customisations have been highlighted time after time as the root cause for most if not all of the bugs and issue users face. This changeover is still very much the main objective, however we are still ironing things out before we flick the switch. We are working out the last few tweaks and edits with the Vanilla support and development team.

We are also going to be making a change to our advertisements provider. We are making a move away from Snigel to another provider in the hopes that we can get more bang for our buck in relation to the viewing of adverts on site. More to come on this when we have details.

I know this may feel like another vague update but we will have something solid to share very soon. In the meantime keep the constructive suggestions and comments coming and happy posting. Mike.

An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
