TJ is a phenomenal hurler with an absolutely rock solid career with great longevity but for me there are many standout hurlers over the years.

You could argue there are a few Messi's ahead of him even in his own county.

its the longevity/age and still playing at top level that are the main parallels with R7…..don’t think he has many of his other ‘attributes’ such as the vain/narcissism, petulance…..😡

I think statistically he’s the best free taker in our lives anyway.

With frees accounting to about 33% of scores, his success has kept Kilkenny punching in my opinion and it doesn’t get talked about enough. These days it might be a ‘ahhhh TJ what a catch!!’ but his frees I feel are taken for granted.

In my mind anyway TJ Reid is ahead of R7 because his greatness is rooted in collective achievement rather than individualism.

His medal haul, his consistency and leadership across three different eras show a player who adapts to systems instead of demanding them be built around him as Ronaldo has done.

TJ's work rate without the ball, aerial dominance and unselfish distribution really does characterise the holistic skill set demanded by hurling, which we all know, is a sport less forgiving of passengers than elite football.

I think that R7’s legacy is increasingly entangled with personal brand, Reid’s is defined by elevating teammates and sustaining a competitive standard deep beyond himself.

R7 is maybe in the top 10 best players of all time in his sport, during his career it was between him and Messi as best player.

TJ is definitely in the top 10 but during his career he had the likes of Tony Kelly and Joe Canning as his equal.

Not sure Tony is in that bracket. He disappeared into Paddy Butler's pocket once too often

Tony Kelly has been playing with clare for 12 or 13 years. Don't think he's defined by a few poor games. After all tj hasn't a great record in croke park lately but not many throw that at him. Rightly so too

A great hurler but honestly wouldn't make top 5 in his own county let alone top 10 all time.

He's in my Top 3 anyway, along with Joe and Tommy Walsh. It's all very subjective of course

I hate the fact that in 100% of the frees he takes he fouls the ball and is never called out on it

As in ‘rests’ it on his hurl/Hurley for half a sec before flicking it in the air…..? ‘Denis Joseph’ was guilty of this also from memory along with taking 8-9 ‘steps’ with ball in hand once anywhere in the vicinity of goal / inside the ‘D’ (as Marty would put it)….🤣🤣

Is that a foul? I just had a quick look online, and I see references to "lifting the ball" and then striking. This is what TJ does. But maybe there is something more specific in the rule book.

Are there any free takers these days that do not keep the ball on the hurl during the rise like TJ does?

A more questionable technique is Horgan's, he rises the ball with his hurl parallel to his stance, in a line to the target and then with the ball resting on the bas, changes his body shape so the ball can be thrown up to his side for the strike, looks a lot less "legal" than Reid's approach

And TJ disappeared into Matt O'Hanlon's too often for him to be considered the GOAT
