That's a well priced plan overall. Its €1,047 and if you are happy with benefits i wouldn't be recommending a change.

The alternative would be My Plan 500 Day to Day, its €1,044 if you bought here.

    Why would you change?

    1. Private Hospital Day case excess- reduces from €250 to €150. At your age day cases more likely than an inpatient admissions
    2. Cardiac procedures in high tech hospitals, you only have 75% coverage which is a big shortfall. Can get procedure in beacon subject to €500 excess on ILH plan (much much less tahn a 25% shortfall!)
    3. General cover in Beacon, no cover on your current plan against coverage for overnight subject to €500 excess
    4. Orthopaedic shortfall is 40% on VHI and much less on ILH plan at €2,500 co payment.

No big savings, but items to consider. If happy with cover you have no need to make a change.

    Hiya

    Currently precision 600 connect.

Mid 50's, I'm in good health and no family history of major issues. Similar with herself

Day to day not important. Happy with online consultations for minor ailments.

Looking at Level Health B for myself as I'm not concerned about private room, but herself would like private room should the need arise. What would you suggest?

Is Laya Optimum a good alternative?

Not overly concerned with an excess of up to €500

    TIA

The big diffenece with 36 13 is its only a semi private room plan versus PMI 24 10 having private room cover.

In addition you only get 50% back instead of 75% on day to day items.

is the HIA.ie website broken? I cant get it to show where to search. I can add in all the details of my plan, ones to compare, but nothing to start the comparison

trying to compare healthguide 3 (Irish life) and others (eg laya inspire plus) or anything similar.

I have myself and husband (both early 30s) on Level Health B plan really just to get us both on something as a first insurance. We’re both healthy (and long may it last) but I wonder are there better plans to be on? As of now our only claims have been for day to day appointments but we will probably be interested in maternity in the next year or so.

    Have you any advice please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

If looking at Maternity you might want to upgrade, their is a 52 week waiting period for Maternity and remember a two year upgrade rule. Your big decision with maternity is usually if you go public, semi private or private. December plans will cover c€300-600 for maternity outpatient consulting fees but a big gap against costs.

You should be looking at a plan for you and one for your partner as different medical needs. Plan B is fairly good value for the cover offered so more you need to see what benefits you want.

Hi ruddy1987 and thank you for all the work you've put into this forum.

We are a couple in our mid/late 70s. Switched to Level Health plan D last January. Thankfully no major claims during the year just day-to-day expenses. The premium has jumped to €2,973 from €2,535. We are both in good health but given our age we need to cover our bases and also need to keep reasonable cover for orthopedics and ophthalmic. HIA suggest Laya Prosper Advanced or Simply Connect Plus. Would you think either of those worth changing to or can you suggest a better alternative?

We also have our 49 year old son covered under Level Health Plan C day to day his policy has jumped from €1803 from €1588. He has recently had cardiac bypass surgery so needs decent cover for cardiac.

    We live in Cork.

Both basic enough plans, but not badly priced. The key thing in your 50s to be thinking is two years ahead, you need to be looking ahead to make any upgrades in cover so you can attend the hospitals you want. An example would be hi tech cover for item like cardiac care or a potential orthopaedic procedure.

Health Guide 2 with discounts stands up very strongly against Laya plans provided that you don't have an expensive consultant (refunds are capped at 50% up to €125).

Proposer advanced is miles better than Simply Connect Plus so I would be advising of that as your plan.

Plan C is relatively poor value, specially if you have decent day to spend as cover is limited. I would be looking at Inspire (covers private room in Mater Private Cork) or health guide 2 with discount on 8.33% (full cover for cardiac procedures with no excess).

Thank you very much for that ruddy1987. I'll look into those plans.

I wish they made health insurance easier to follow, it's a minefield.

@ruddy1987 What plan would you suggest for a couple in their mid fifties who have never had health insurance before and have had no major health issues to date?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Mid 50s they are going to be hit badly with loadings, 2% for ever year over 34 payable for 10 years. As a starting point First cover with irish Life (link above his discount) or Plan A with Level health might be a point to start. Get in the system and access to skip waiting lists effectively in public hospitals, serve your pre existing waiting periods and look to increase your cover in time if issues develop.

Your loading is payable for 10 years so key is not being on a costly plan early to avoid massive extra premium on loading.

you mean they're looking at 20% add-on for the next 10 years???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,866 ✭✭✭cython

Probably more like 40%, and for up to 10 years. The lifetime community rating loading is 2% extra for every year you spend uninsured aged 35 or over, and payable for the first 10 years of insurance. If we take mid 50s as meaning 55 (to simplify the discussion) that's 20 years as the input to calculating the loading, leading to a total loading of 40%. This is only payable for a max of 10 years though.

I'm currently on Laya - "Simply Connect" and the renewal premium is coming in at € 2,483. I'm single, male and don't have children. I have recently had treatment for Vertabrae issues. There is a history of eye disease and cancer in my family.

I'm looking for a plan (prefer to stay with Laya) in the region of € 1800 per annum. Any suggestions of a suitable plan ?

    Many thanks.

if you are willing to go from 100% ortho and ophthalmic coverage to 80% inspire or inspire plus will be suitable. If you want to keep your full ortho cover if move to prosper advanced.

I'm on the VHI plan that used to be called Business Plan Starter. I think it might have a different name now but I'm not sure. Its €80 a month. It used to be €55 some years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

I don’t believe that plan still exists , you might check the current plan name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,163 ✭✭✭✭Gael23

I am struggling to find a plan thst meets my needs at a price I can afford. Have been on ILH Horizon 4 since 2019 but at €189 per month each it’s no longer affordable.

Tried Laya today but only one plan Connect Choice is somewhat suitable but benefits are not the same. Also most of their plans have. Low outpatient clim limit. Trying VHI in the morning.

I just want high cover for things like consultant visits, low excess and at least €2000 outpatient limit

34 year old male suffering from a long term illness. Paying 150 a month currently and that’s about as much as I can afford

If you are willing to drop down to semi private room and up to 50% coverage for items like GP and consultants Health Guide 2 at €135 per month with the discount via link on other post might be attractive as it has thr €4K outpatient limits. Laya have some good plans but a lot of them have a cap of €1,000-€1,500 for day to day stuff.

The most similar vest priced alternative to Horizon 4 is like Healthguide 3, it’s private room with €75 excess per stay and up to 75% back for GP & Consultants. With discount it’s €165 per month and has €4,000 outpatient limit.

Family of 6, with Laya for a few years but premium has jumped from 450pm to 531pm.

Myself and my wife are on SimplyHealth Plus - €1545 each

Eldest child 22 is on Signify plus - €700

    Essential Connect Family x 3

19year old son is coming off the policy as he has corporate cover now with his work. His cost is 1062

    17 year old is 393

16 year old daughter is 0

Total cost 5245 (although the renewal letter says total 6194, so will need to check that too!)

Policy doesn't renew until 1st Jan

Hi @ruddy1987 thanks for all the work you are doing here. My situation is slightly strange.

I am on Laya Prime and my wife is on Laya Signify.

I am 39 and she is 33 and currently pregnant with our first child. We plan to have at least one more from a maternity point of view.

I am on Prime from my old company who paid for it and she has to pay for signify herself.

My new company is now willing to pay for both of our policies. The obvious thing to do with be to add us both to Prime but there is some negotiations to this so I could do with reducing the cost. So far what I am seeing as alternatives would be.

    Plan C

    Health Guide 1

Would you have any views? Thanks in advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Firstly congratulations to you and your wife. I’d recommend health guide 2 over health guide 1, it’s not a massive price difference and it has much better cover for day to day and in patient. With the discount you can get on health guide 2 (8.33% from 1st of January link on other posts) I would be going in that direction. Plan C has very poor day to day coverage.

Prime was a legacy decent plan but wouldn’t be fantastic anymore as medical costs are rising and the flat payment amount on outpatient isn’t fantastic.

Incredibly stupid question, I'm going to renew through your link with the discount, do I need to let anyone know or will that just renew my policy

I don't want to end up with 2 on the go in January, I've always just renewed directly with Irish life health

Not a silly question at all. Officially they are for new policies only, so you will just need to email Irish life and cancel your current policy. Annoying but only way as they will not give discount on your existing plan.
