    Evening,
    I have x2 roadbikes with Ultegra 6800 and 105 r7000 rear derailleurs.
I have learned to index them quite well, but find that the adjustment barrel screw rounds or de-threads very quickly.
So the barrel doesnt really index well anymore.
I have put in in line barrel adjusters and these work okay but possibly not as well as the adjuster on the actual derailleur...

Do any of you relate to this?
Can the in line barrel adjuster work as well as the adjuster on the derailleur?
Is there any way to rethread the barrel screw on the actual rear derailleur?

    Thanks for reading,

    A

Strange that the tension adjusters have rounded on both of your mechs. I don’t think I’ve ever had that happen. I have seen damaged adjusters though and I’ve found that they can be replaced by the ones pictured below which works well.
The inline ones work ok but I’ve had them lose tension gradually in the past as well.
Do you have a tension adjuster on your frame?

Would you be able to epoxy a nut where the barrel tensioner should be on your mech to receive one of the tensioners below? Could be a stupid idea but it’s easier than installing a helicoil..

been so long since i had to index my gears - don't you need to pull back the plastic barrel to engage it to adjust? is it that mechanism which is bust?

    Evening! thanks for the replies...

The derailleurs are probably 8-9 years old and I learned how to index with them...

It seems that the thread on the bolt that screws into the actual derailleur is rounded or the thread in the actual derailleur, that accepts the adj. barrel screw, is rounded...

the result is that the barrel adj doesnt screw into the derailleur to effectively index..

first world problem.. but I would live to get it working again.. it seems the metal is quite soft & doesn't take much punishment!?

that sounds like a good idea... what would you stick the nut to the derailleur with?

maybe JB Weld epoxy or similar

Could be ok if you could clamp it

Or get it in place and use one of the tensioners above to hold it where it should be once glued
