Washing machine in a toilet

Can a washing machine be placed in a ground floor room that has a toilet and a sink - no bath/shower?

I have seen posts saying they can't be in a bathroom but I wondered if the lack of bath/shower makes it a different case. There's a sink in the kitchen and utility (which is too small for the washing machine) so I'm hoping it might be ok.

Yes, no problem with that. If there was a bath/shower in it then it's more complicated but with just a shower and a sink it's fine

It’s usually fine to put a washing machine in a room that only has a toilet and a sink. The main restrictions apply when there’s a bath or shower because of the electrical safety zones. As long as the plumbing is suitable and the machine is kept away from any direct water sources, you should be okay.

Just make sure the drainage and connections are done properly. I’ve seen cases through water damage restoration where leaks went unnoticed in small utility spaces, so it helps to check the hoses and the floor now and then. Other than that, it’s a common setup.

We have our washing machine and tumble dryer in our downstairs toilet. They fit perfectly into the space assigned for wheelchair accessibility. Put a piece of worktop on for the dryer to sit on with a side panel from the floor for strength and plumbing for washing machine connects into toilet.

Just ensure that you have adequate ventilation and perhaps don’t have electrical socket directly behind the appliances if at all possible. I always leave window open when dryer is on so the room doesn’t get condensated.

Thank you all for your help.

I just spoke with someone who quoted ET101 Regulations Section 701 which talks about rooms with a bath or shower. They said all other rooms, such as this, are fine. Our toilet is under the stairs so no window etc - internal wall. But it does have a fan which our utility room doesn't so it might be a step up in that way. I'd leave the door open so it is ventilated into the hallway.

Just make sure you're not using all the facilities with that door open!

Now I have to work out what stacking kit works for a Bosch washing machine and a Zanussi tumble dryer
