Any existing Flogas customers get the €150 bonus when renewing with this plan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 115 ✭✭The Darkness

As far as I can remember (when the plan details were still immediately visible at that link) there was no welcome credit incentive to sign up. It was all about the preferential and (supposedly) fixed rate. Although, we all now know it wasn't, in fact, "fixed" at all.

Just tried to input my email address (the one I already used to sign up for gas with them via this plan, twice) there to see for myself and it said that the "email domains do not match", so I'm unable to access the plan information.

Has anyone been able to access it? Or do you now presumably need an actual BWG email address to do so?

My electricity and gas contracts with Energia are expiring tomorrow. I am having solar PV installed 8 kW system next week and Pinenergy is suggested as the best deal via energypal.ie

Do I wait until the new solar PV is installed or I can switch tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

The answer to your query is sign up the day after the contract expires. So sign up on Wednesday.

Pinergy is an odd company to go with. I'd be avoiding them

Thanks for the feedback on PinEnergy.

Second best suggested deal is from FloGas.

@bren2001, do you have solar PV/Battery? Curious about the comment re pinenergy? They have 6c 3 hour overnight rate and 25c feed in tariff currently. If you have solar pv and batteries they are a great option if you know how to optimize it. In winter I run my house on circa e1 a day from grid, 6c * 17kwh charged to batteries in 3 hours. Excess solar will be exported at 25c. In summer you can build up a lot of credit too. Its defo not for non pv/battery users as their standard rate is very high but the key to it is minimal draw from the grid outside of the cheap 3 hour 6c window. I do have 18kwh battery storage though so can cover pretty much any days requirements bar when the house load exceeds the inverters capacity at 5.5kwh. Their 1st couple of bills make no sense (will charge ya e300 but then once they have a few mths data a large credit hits up and it normalizes then, you have to keep e200 credit minimum on account and they have no problem paying excess credit back to your bank account. Its a niche offering that solar PV owners ideally with batteries can make the most savings on.

Are you getting battery storage also? Pinenergy is a very good option in certain solar pv setups.

Looks like one of the Flogas offerings (Fixed Electricity [24.09c inc VAT] or Single Electricity 30% Discount [27.75c inc VAT] + €150 credit) will suit me best.

Just out of curiosity, what are people actually being offered from their Retention Team to stay with Energia?

I had a look through their Renew My Contract portal on my account and all that was offered was a paltry 25% off, for 31.99c (inc VAT) - which is a bad joke considering I'm currently getting a 41% discount from them. Even more so, when you factor in the 12% price increase in October.

So that risible offer for the next 12 months, would effectively be a whopping 42% price increase from last year's signup rate. Give over!

Their new customer offering isn't much better tbh (29% discount @ 30.28c) but at least that's almost, somewhere near market competitive.

Is that really the best they've got?

No battery. Just 8kw solar PV system. Battery was extra €3000 and cant afford for the moment.

I am with Energia at the moment.

The best deal for me is FloGas:

Smart Dual Fuel 30% Discount + €210 Welcome Credit.

Just to be clear, the risible offer you referred to for existing customers is only 5% more than the 'near market competitive' offer for new customers. Also, base electricity prices have been rising recently so it's not fair to compare current plan pricing with that from last year.

Ok, run a mile from pinenergy then, without battery storage it's a non starter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

No, i don't. I overlooked the solar comment tbh.

You seem to know a helluva a lot more about that setup than I do so I'll stay quiet.

    Some solid advice there!

I went SSE today myself. The current offer for me from Energia is 25% as well but I believe that gets increased when you actually go to leave. Expect a call from them with a better offer if you've started the switch.

FYI. I just came to the end of my year of Energia Dual fuel - AXA offer non-smart (-34% gas, -35% elec).

Made the move to Flogas Smart 24Hr Dual Fuel 30% Discount + €210 Welcome Credit.

I know that means my electricity meter will now be activated 🙄
The only saving grace is that with my Solar PV & battery, my grid electricity consumption is down to 800kWh pa.

I'm a fairly big gas consumer… 18,000kWh pa… so at current rates this Flogas dual fuel deal saves me ~€120 pa.

I have to move to FloGas tomorrow. Did you do the changeover online via the FloGas website?

Did you get an improved offer from Energia since?

    Has anyone else got one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 537 ✭✭✭WealthyB

I wish people would use unit rates when discussing deals, "34% discount" means nothing when you don't know the actual unit rate..

Existing (non-smart) contract with Electric Ireland is up in Jan - had been on a fixed rate of €0.275 per kWh (ex VAT) all year. A small reduction to €0.226 with SSE appears the best out there for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 405 ✭✭Gerard93

Well said on the percentage being quoted by various posters it means nothing without a unit rate and its been said previously throughout the thread

.226 seems like a good rate I assume thats Ex. VAT

Not yet. They call me in a day or two i imagine!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,328 ✭✭✭masterboy123

I just switched to FloGas. See rates below. My Energia dual fuel contract expired yesterday, and I haven't received an offer from them. Also, I'm getting an 8kW solar PV system installed next week (without a battery). I used Kilowatt.ie and EnergyPal to find the best deal. Let's see what the new bills will be like.

Anyone still with Waterpower? Wondering what their variable rate was like over the last 6 months. I saved a decent amount with them from June 23 - Sept 24 (when most people were paying at least €0.30+ per unit ex VAT) but by the end it was cheaper for me to go elsewhere.. (that's a snapshot of my own simple Google spreadsheet for tracking usage and costs)

Am currently on 1 year fixed with EI. Unit rate is 0.2075 ex vat. Currently on MCC01 meter and can download data from esb networks but haven't been on a smart plan. Can anyone tell me if getting a day night meter is an option. Girlfriend has just bought an EV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,002 ✭✭✭bren2001

Your current smart meter (likely) isn't capable of D/N readings without being activated. Its very unlikely that you will be allowed swap it out for one that is capable of that.

If you were to activate the meter, you could avail of smart Day/Night tariffs. However, with an EV, you would likely be better of on a specialised EV tariff. I think the thread below may contain better information than here:

I left them when they hit 30c. Never thought to check them I switched a few weeks back and they are a good bit cheaper. I would have switched back. Anyway done now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭Redfox25

Depends on your usage and how much she drives.

We use day night as the savings would be minimal due to the higher costs outside the ev window. Again your use may not be the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,832 ✭✭✭rx8

I'm on day/night rate with EI, and it's 12.5c/unit to charge my EV overnight, including vat.

Most of the special ev rates last for only 2-4 hours. Not enough time to fully charge an ev.

On some of the nights I'm not charging, I would have the dishwasher or washing machine running on the cheap rate too.

What are peoples feelings on holding on to an unactivated smart meter plan; if the plan is more expensive than the equivalent smart meter plan?

so you are thinking of paying more to stay on a standard plan ? Smart plans are not as bad as they were at the start and if it was me I would change to save money

    The internet isn’t for everyone
