Bill introduced to rename Dublin Airport after Lemass

This for me would be a complete indulgence by politicians. Its a national asset. The name Sean Lemass has little or no resonance for most Irish people, and absolutely none for foreign visitors. Yes I know he was Taoiseach in the 1960s.

I think naming transport hubs is stupid. They should just be called what the desis.

Its the airport for Dublin so nothing is a better name than Dublin airport.

Well by renaming Dublin airport in his honour, that might give people some awareness of his achievements and influence on modern Ireland.

Well they renamed the RDS to the Laya stadium so anything goes

Laya Arena which is far more stupid. Don't end and start a name with "A" like that.

At least it's not Royal anymore.

Why is your man Bill introducing all this stuff? Has he nothing better to do?

If you absolutely HAVE to rename it, then at least rename it after a notable aviator, such as James Fitzmaurice, co-pilot and navigator of the first flight to successfully cross the Atlantic from east to west, a major achievement. What's more, Fitzmaurice was born in Dublin, grew up in Portlaoise, and later became commandant of the Irish Air Corps, so he's got plenty of local connections in addition to his achievements as an aviator.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

I agree it shouldn’t be renamed, but a bit of google would go towards understanding why his name has been suggested. He helped transform Ireland completely.

He does deserve recognition of some sort, maybe Dublin Port would be more apt considering his influence on trade.

It's utter nonsense. They must have nothing to better to do with their time. Jesus Wept!

It's very common, and we have none. About time we caught up.

Dublin port should be named after Charle Haughey or Bertie seeing as the money hungry whores rode the whole country.

Make it Lemass and Haughey. Charlie was Sean's son in law.

Stupid idea. Dublin Airport says exactly what it is, and where it is. No other information is required.

Plenty of famous people who deserve recognition of some sort for their contributions to the country and society but no way a FF politicians name should be added to Dublin airport. HTG, the way FF go on, you’d think no other politician ever did anything good for the country or our current way of life. That TD who proposed this must have little to do.

If Lemass did such good things for business and trade, maybe name a business school in one of our universities, build a statue, name a new street, or even a tunnel like that other FF leader. Plenty of options.

NI named the Belfast City Airport after George Best but that’s been dropped as it serves no purpose for travellers.

Jeeez, just leave as is. I’d imagine there will be a significant six figure cost in terms of changing signage on / in the buildings, updating liveries on all the DAA vehicles, in house documentation / IT etc.

The airport operates fine and has done for decades, just simply called Dublin Airport, or as Dublin people refer to it as just ‘ the airport ‘. Way too many gobaloons in decision making positions in this country now…

No members of the public will ever call it Lemass airport after all this time so it’s really just a vanity / back slapping project.

I think there is something very tacky and small town about it (yes I am aware of Paris CDG). It's like Belfast has so little going for it that they need to desperately point out that Best was from there.

I'd have no problem with that, but drop the Sean.

I'm struggling to see the rationale here, both for renaming the airport as an idea in and of itself and of doing it after Sean Lemass. Surely if the name were to be changed, the obvious choice would be Michael Collins or Eamon de Valera.

Athens' airport is named after Eleftherios Venizelos who was the architect of the modern Greek state. Paris has one named after Monsieur de Gaulle. It's not necessarily a bad idea but at this stage, it just seems like a waste of money as the airport would have to rebrand itself.

This seems like a very silly idea to me.

A colossal waste of time and money. Three Dublin Bus routes serve the airport. Each of the bus stops for the 3 routes will have to be updated to reflect the change. Changes to the websites of Aircoach, citylink, DAA, every airline that flies in or out of Dublin. Add in lots of confusion for tourists.

To be fair, much of that just requires a single change in the backend of whatever software system the different transpoprt operators use. For the airlines, it'll likely be even easier, since most airlines use one of only three or four reservation systems, and what you see on the website is actually pulled from those systems. So once those reservation system are updated, every airline will automatically use the new name.

It's the non-public side that'll need the most work. Aeronautical charts would have to be updated, as well as the non-graphical data that's fed into aircraft flight management systems. This data is updated on a regular basis, but it still needs to be verified and double-checked before it's submitted, and it would likely a) be timed with one of the regular update cycles, and b) be accompanied by a NOTAM advising aircrew of the change. Not sure if that's worth the hassle.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

    Collins airport of anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,117 ✭✭✭✭John_Rambo

As much as Michael Collins loved Dublin, spent so much time in the capital, and is ultimately laid to rest there, if Dublin Airport is ever formally named after a person, it will almost certainly be after a Dubliner. Perfect for Cork Airport though!

A return to its roots. Dublin Airport was originally called Collinstown.

The last time I was involved in a "simple backend change" we had to get a consultant out of retirement because the system was so old. Which guess what? Cost a lot of $$$.

"Not sure it's worth the hassle". Of course it's not worth the hassle. There is zero benefit, will cost money, and we get lectured and taxed all in the name of sustainability, climate change etc. This change would be wasteful and it is completely unnecessary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,532 ✭✭✭tara73

I don't get the need for calling an airport after whoever. Why all the hassle for it, just leave it with the city it's located, pretty simple and makes for no misunderstandings when booking for foreigners.

p.s. didn't see there are already some posts wit the same opinion.

Major transport hubs should be called after their location. Anything else is confusing.

Personally I think it should be called Dustin the Turkey Airport
