The government are not going to give money for motor racing - as it’s NOT horse racing, golf, GAA, greyhound racing, olympics etc. etc. . Although if Alex were ever to win the world championship, or indeed even a Grand Prix, all the politicians will be crowding around him on his return home to be sure to be in the frame for all those photo opportunities.

    Just like when Charlie Haughey won the Tour de France . . . . . . .

What a ridiculous proposal. The funding of individuals to further their ambitions should not be coming from the state's coffers.

Does this not happen with all of our elite athletes? Just to play devil's advocate.

Yes Sport Ireland issue high performance grants to individuals. But they're very modest amounts - mostly low 10ks. Not nearly enough for F2.

P5 qualifying by Dunne in Qatar. Should set himself up well for both the sprint and feature race.

Update on Alex's weekend. 6th in the sprint and 3rd in the main event. Leo Fornaroli was crowned F2 champion this weekend. Dunne remains 5th 13 points behind Luke Browning. No comments of note from Alex about his break up with McLaren or his chances at Red Bull

    This too shall pass.

Is he still officially without a drive for 2026?

Red bull are announcing their 2026 f1 lineup tomorrow, so maybe there'll be movement on their Junior lineup at same time?

He'll need to have something lined up again for next year if he wants to have any hope of an F1 drive in the future. The breakup from McLaren isn't making any sense at the moment if he has ambitions for F1. I'm sure he'll do fine in other series but his F1 ship could sail by fairly quickly.

2027 could be interesting depending on who retires. There are a good few older drivers coming to end of their careers.

I thought Dunne had a seat lined up with Rodin in F1 for 2026. Has this changed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,929 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Rodin are not an F1 team, they are an F2 team and no they haven't announced him for next year yet. I believe Alex needs to pay his way into that seat.

    This too shall pass.

Sorry, that might have been autocorrect. Yes, Rodin are an F2 team!

I thought he had funding in place for 2 seasons with Rodin.

He was firm in the after race presser that it was his decision to leave, that there will be no space in McLaren for a long time. I think he is wrong on that as I don't see Piastri hanging around and it looks like McLaren are signing Fornaroli as reserve driver for next year.

Unless he has has something in the works with another F1 team, his decision looks rash but but he did allude to it in the presser by responding to a question asking him of his plans and where he anticipates himself racing, "that information I'm going to keep to myself" and "moving forward we are in the right place and where we want to be"

Fornaroli and Verschoor added to the Mclaren young driver programme. Hopefully Alex has something in the pipeline

Wow Verschoor, was not expecting that. With Piastri clearly very unhappy, Ferrari and many others sniffing around, I feel he and Mark Webber will push to get out of Mclaren for next season. Maybe McLaren see the same, Verschoor is the the 2nd reserve if Fornaroli steps in for Piastri.

Meanwhile Alex still in F2 hoping for an RB seat. But Tsolov is looking good already and might end up taking that seat over him. This could end up being an epic mistake by Alex.

McClaren clearly have the fastest car. Ferrari are a basket case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭JimBobSnob

That could all change with new cars next year. But yes I would definitely choose Aston Martin over Ferrari with Newey there.

End of next season is when things will go bonkers with driver changes - the teams who have gotten the new rules right or wrong will be apparent which could lead to people like Max moving, people like Lewis & Fernando retiring and so on. So aim of the game of Dunne is to be there as a viable candidate at end of next season for any team that is left looking at an empty seat.

This is it. He does need to nail the second season in F2 though if that's what he is doing. And I'm sure he will but Rodin need to cut out the stupid mistakes they keep making, Alex seems to have matured a lot with his driving, cutting out his own errors.

Sounds like it is Alpine or nothing.

Some form of backing would be helpful though.

Does confirm he has a drive in f2 in 2026. Perform there and make people notice.

I think the Alpine rumours all but confirm he made a mistake leaving McLaren. He thought he was in at red bull, now he'll be in a very busy academy at the lowest team on the grid, if he signs with them. Apparently Marko wanted him but others in Red bull didn't. Other rumours suggest they played McLaren by getting their best young prospect out of the team with promises they wouldn't fulfill.

But if he wins F2 next year he'll be in demand for an F1 seat, anything less than 1st or maybe 2nd if not beaten by a rookie, he may miss out.

Very disappointing as he is a better/faster driver than Lindblad and proved that this year.
