Have been completely out of the loop last 9 months or so.

See a new old comber getting realsed and the black barrel proof got re-released, which is great. Anything else come out that's interesting or fantastic in the Irish whiskey scene

I suppose a lot happens in 9 months, but here's what springs to mind for me-

Hinch released their own single malts in May… Bourbon and Oloroso finish, and a peated finish option as well. They're good everyday drinkers and pretty much supermarket priced, would highly recommend in terms of cost/value proposition.

The Ardara Single Malt from Sliabh Liag / Ardara Distillery released in August. It's premium priced, a little above even the likes of what Boann and Dingle are charging, but it's very good whisky. Heavily peated, properly interesting stuff.

Waterford has been in receivership since about March, and talks are ongoing about whether it will be acquired by anyone - I think a US bourbon producer was being talked about in recent weeks.

Fercullen went into receivership in July, imagine it'll be a similar story with them.

One way or another whatever juice is there will eventually hit the market.

My sense is that Two Stacks seems to have done very well this year, both in terms of kudos from whiskey fans but also just in terms of business and expansion (Although one might have been saying the same thing about Fercullen 12 months ago..).

It's interesting to me that they are exploding, as a bonder, when you have had very good quality bonders like JJ Corry that haven't. The difference appears to be one of scale, I suppose JJ Corry are smaller and more boutique-y and maybe that's the limit of their aspirations.

I think Two Stacks marketing is top notch. I've had some very good whiskey from them and a couple of abominations but they're attracting new whiskey drinkers with some of the fruity stuff. The cans are really clever and their cream liqueur is fantastic.

Black Barrel Proof seems to be out of stock everywhere, at least when I went looking in October.

Yeah, I don't remember seeing anything about a new batch coming out. I think a few shops just advertised that they were selling off stock that was "found in the back" and such. Which is a shame, because it's a fantastic whiskey.

Nice. Since they started stocking it in Aldi I've been getting through quite a lot of it.

Much appreciated, I always found Waterford confusing what they were trying to achieve, but sad to hear they've closed up.

I'm the same in regards to Two stacks, don't know what their secret recipe is for success, but seems to be working, and find myself drawn towards them.

O'Briens happened to finds some old stock, which they sold off recently. I managed to pick up 14 bottles of it. Doesn't look like it'll be released again.

I picked up a bottle of the Hinch peated single malt. It's really nice. I know a few people that aren't wild about peated whiskey that got some as well. Great value at €36.

Had their warehouse collection as well, and priced low enough for cask strength. I liked the Virgin Oak, as well as the Oloroso finish, but didn't like the Port one at all.

Going to take a trip up to the distillery early next year.

Feck, I hadn't realised that, I was only looking for some recently.

It came up in an ad on instagram, and I thought it as being released again. When I found out it was old stock, I bought as much as I could. They weren't offering delivery, so had to travel to three different O'Briens to get them all.

Someone mentioned their local Dunnes still had some, further up in the thread. Not sure if that's still the case.

I've definitely not seen it around here in Cork, but will keep at eye out, thanks.

I see Connacht Distillery/Whiskey is being rebranded as Ballina Distillery/Whiskey, anyone know what the story is there?

I'm a winter whiskey drinker, like the odd shot of Jameson in my coffee.

Jameson triple distilled at just over €22/70cl on sale regularly in Lidl fits the bill. Might treat myself to something more expensive (Redbreast?) over Christmas but will have to hide it from visitors.

    Distillery changed owners recently enough.

Head distiller had moved on a bit before that too, I think.

Currently nursing a nice little natterjack. It's very sippable.

Looking for a Christmas present for my brother and I'm thinking of picking up a rye whiskey for him as he is a big fan of Rustbucket. Not sure if I've ever even had a rye whiskey myself, so does anyone have any recommendations? Seeing Bulleit Rye and Woodford Rye are both decently priced at the minute.

If you're buying a US Rye then Sazerac is the iconic choice and not badly priced.

Knob Creek Rye is meant to be good, but tbh they're all good... Rittenhouse Rye, Wild Turkey Rye etc

You can't go wrong with Sazerac. Or Rittenhouse for a bit of extra kick. CWS have a Michter's Rye, single barrel, at the moment which is fantastic.

Sazerac Rye is a solid pick.

A left field choice would be limited release Achill Island single malt finished in applewood rye casks. I had a sample taste of it and was impressed. Bit pricier at €60 though.

Or this Keepers Heart which blends American rye and Irish whiskey. €50

There is also Powers Irish Rye which is more readily available.

Tasted a Chateau du Breuil French whiskey last night. I'd tasted their Calvados before which is top class. I did not know they made whiskey. Beautiful dram. This stuff is worth finding.
