Some great conditions on FM and DAB - Getting a "Freedom FM" on 99.5 up here in the North East, but not the same content as the DAB Freedom - Also Getting Dublin South on 93.9

Edit.. Freedom must be prepping another FM run and 99.5 is Wicklow as 105.2 has also been energised

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 652 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

Freedom on 105.2 making it to the Pembrokeshire west coast with careful pointing of the telescopic aerial to get rid of Heart

99.5 is a no no as Radio 1 is so strong there.

    C103 a cracking signal on 103.1

All the DAB stations good again today .

Sounding well on 88.1, 99.5, and 105.2 in Tallaght area. They officially start Monday 00.01 so then they will be live. Music on all frequencies until then.

    C103 have no transmission on 103.1 Oscar - either 103.3 or 103.7 I expect?

In the past day amateurs from as far away as Amsterdam going through the amateur 2 Metre repeater at Mullaghanish on the Cork-Kerry border , output 145.750 NFM, exceptional conditions

was driving up the M50 this afternoon with a rock solid BBC Scotland on 94.3; strong enough to stop the scan and resolve RDS

RDS came up on my car radio today in Dundalk for BBC Scotland 94.7 and Clyde 1 102.5 perfect reception. Yesterday Clyde 1 and Ocean FM were battling it out on 102.5.

I sometimes drive a car with DAB as an option on the car radio and the last few times around south Dublin, including this evening, as well as displaying various UK DAB stations (which it used to do before FáilteDAB arrived), it has actually been broadcasting some of them intermittently. Is that something to do with lift conditions?

This event is very strong. It got a mention twice today on the weather forecasts when I was listening to BBC Radio 4. They couch it in terms of the conditions having an adverse effect on TV reception. That is for normal people, not oddballs like us.

there’s been some great dx conditions in the last few days. I had TayFm from Dundee blasting into me in Tallaght during the week as well as Greatest Hits Radio (UK version) and despite having line of site to Mt Oriel LMFM were completely replaced by BBC Radio 4

That was from the Black Hill transmitter in Scotland. On my way to Newry this morning it took over 95.8 from LMFM at times.

that would make sense because Clyde were coming in too as well as Radio nan Gàidheal all from the same site.

testing this evening with continuous music in Cork on the same frequency as before, 88.7 is college station Juice FM Cork, i think it is its first appearance this college year. It has a 30-day temp licence (a day or 2 every week during college terms) officially starting for this college year tomorrow Thursday

    RDS PS = "JUICE FM"

    PI = 20C2

RadioText has song titles and a follow us on facebook etc message

ENERGY 1440AM Sounding fantastic today Saturday and yesterday, great music mix and audio.

Dead carrier transmitting on 99.8, mono with no RDS, in the Cavan area all weekend. Off air by Monday morning.

I would strongly suspect it to be a reincarnated Misty Mountain Radio, possibly doing test transmissions. Mono without RDS, and very similar signal strength to 99.4 in the areas I was driving. They also broadcast a lot of dead air, often for weeks and weeks on end, towards the end of their time on 99.4.

got to hear a Mass broadcast on Sunday. Quite decent audio as well! Was quite powerful on 107.3 up on Three Rock mountain.

And it probably got more listeners than Spirit Radio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭Sunnyboy11

Spirit Radio does not have many listeners. Is it really worth their time broadcasting with such a small audience?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,129 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Most of its income is from donations. As long as a small amount of listeners continue to pay, it'll keep going. It does seem quite ridiculous to those of us from the outside looking at this from our perspective.

Anyone around Europe tuning Medium Wave at night will hear lots of Spanish. Not for much longer, Spain is closing all MW transmissions by the end of the year. There won't be much left in Europe when they go.

An amendment to that post about Spain. There are other broadcasters in Spain apart from RNE on MW. COPE and SER. I don't know what their plans are. A video here from the UK explaining what could be heard when RNE goes. Not mentioned there is when 585 goes, it will make reception of VOCM on 590 from Newfoundland even easier. It is probably the easiest station to hear in Ireland from North America.

Energy on 1440khz a very usable signal while driving north of Fishguard in Pembrokeshire 12:30pm yesterday.

Conditions must have been up as Radio North on 846khz was also ok — even Radio Caroline on 648khz was make an appearance .

Why can't it be like this all the time !?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭Ger Roe

    True enough Oscar.

I was picking up Caroline on 648, perfectly listenable on a car radio driving from Dublin to Wicklow last night at 18:00 hrs. It reminded me of the first days of broadcasts from The Ross in 1983, when the signal rolled into Dublin once darkenss fell. The transmitter at Orford Ness was making a good trip last night for the 4KW output.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 652 ✭✭✭Oscarziggy

    Ger Roe.

Yes a return trip down the west coast between 9pm and 10pm with the best mobile signal from Caroline on 648khz for a long time — constant even through the centre of Fishguard.

Interesting frequency change for Cork City & North Cork. Any reason why 106.7 was vacated? It’s been on that frequency since 2009 if I remember correctly

106.6 for Wicklow Town and surrounds as well, with audio.

    Christmas FM : Bray 99.5Mhz

If anyone from ELF (Electronics Logistics Force) is reading……. the Bray transmitter is sounding rough. When listening earlier on the morning commute, it seemed like it was switching between audio processor settings. Sometimes sounding better, but not consistent.

It might be worth getting Chief Engineering Elf, Sparky Wyrin, to have a listen and take a look.

Best of luck for the live launch on Friday and for the 2025 run.
