Preston Stewart predicts Ukrainian will reject Trumps plan, though a "soft no".

The only good thing about the 28 point plan is the $100bn for rebuilding Ukraine. The problem is that most of the frozen Russian assets are in Europe and the US can't compel this. Also what happens to the remaining hundreds of billions frozen mostly in Europe? Does it go back to the oligarchs?

Those who are sceptical Russia is planning more invasions should listen to what Gurolyov has said on Russian State TV about all the countries they are going to invade. This is really 1930s carry on. We will be here again in future, probably in the Baltic states, Moldova, even Poland.

Its true they are rearming but when it came to the 24 Russian drones that recently crashed or were shot down in Poland, only about 4 were shot down, and those were by fighter jets costing millions, compared to drones costing $10000. NATO needs to wake up on the drone threat. There is a tendency in western history to fight the last war, such as France in 1940 thinking it was going to be like World War 1 trench warfare and not anticapting the importance of tanks.

Despite what people on here believe (especially the trolls in the Russian thread), the majority of the US public, US house & Senate all support Ukraine and believe they should continue to be supported.

There's very few people coming out in support of Trump's sell out Ukraine plan. I'd like to see more members of Congress speak out about it. The Senate has been quite vocal in their support of Ukraine in the past. I think Ukraine needs that now more than ever.

It might not be made public all the time, but NATO is absolutely waking up to the threat of drones. The idea that's already been mentioned of making a 'drone wall' (basically a system of radars, sensors, jamming and weapons systems to detect incoming drones) is the first start.

Across Europe you've also got tons of new companies or existing ones being switched to either producing drones for Ukraine or improving the EU's own drone set ups.

On the other hand the US is reducing its troop presence in Romania, a Black Sea state. This is a mistake. Romania should be built up as a deterrence to Russian aggression in the Black Sea.

    Reducing, but not removing completely.

The US has had multiple brigades on rotation in Europe for multiple years now, and they are subdivided up, reducing their capability. They are longer rotations than European forces use, and farther from home. It’s not particularly sustainable.

The US military has increased its permanent basing in Europe again, to the point that they have started doing accompanied tours in their new base in Poland (2-year tours, with families), together with increase or returns of accompanied tours in existing bases in places like Germany and Turkey. Romania is considered an expeditionary assignment, short term rotational.

In effect, it’s a tradeoff. Europe is getting a more permanent increase overall, but specific countries are getting effective reductions.

AI is going to lead to pretty significant discomfort amongst the electorates in every western country for the next 20 years. It's likely going to impact job numbers negatively more and more and that isn't good for any government.

I personally try to avoid it as much as possible, but it is getting harder and harder. I just noticed today for the first time that the "Timeline" updates on Google for Liverpool/Nottingham Forrest was patently written by AI so that's me done with paying attention to what is written there.

This past weeks evidence of the ability of tech owners to impact the way AI works cannot be ignored. I'll be consider my elected representatives views on AI regulation as a factor in future elections but even as I write that, I fear the horse has bolted already.

Reports Witkoff has never once visited Ukraine.

I'm OK with that, the US can no longer be seen as a reliable ally. If troops are stationed in Romania it should be European troops imo.

I’d go further and say they should be seen as a hostile country given Trump’s backing of Russia

yes,I was thinking along the lines of a "reliable foe"

Exactly, no one wants a trojan horse in their country who may ally with your invader and turn their guns on you.

A peace plan negotiated between the US and Russia and the US is now threatening Ukraine and Nato to accept this deal or suffer a worse one later.

What a turnaround in the world. The US has quickly given up its world policeman role and actually turned into a bully of former allies.

Is Dan Driscoll tending toward a promotion to Secretary of War? This suggestion may be a propaganda fake news item from the Dem side of the argument.

I’m not sure what the suggestion is to which you are referring, but I’d be good with Driscoll. I’m hearing generally positive things about his tenure so far.

The suggestion was by Occupy Democrats, not generally known for their fondness of the Trump Admin team. According to them, Hegseth is falling out of favour as Sec War with Driscoll mentioned as a likely replacement.

Trump also supports the country that's killed the most journalists.

But have they really? Like, what's the alternative for Ukraine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,363 ✭✭✭✭aloyisious

Lets put it this way, I have no doubt that Putin would treat Zelenskyy the same way Trump recently suggested that some elected members of the U.S congress should be after they were locked up.

World Policeman – Er, no, that was always just slick marketing.

All empires are built on extreme relentless violence & savagery, divide & conquer, hierarchy, hate and infinite expansion – and they all collapse eventually for these reasons. This hegemonic criminal enterprise is no more or less disgusting & anti-human than ALL of its predecessors.

Atm, the US is sacrificing various pawns and cashing in various chips!
    It’s all chaotic and unpredictable.
This era’s Pax Romana is over -> now it gets ugly!!

Very roughly there's a 3:1 advantage in being the defender and Ukraine has 1/3rd the population of Russia. But Ukraine has better kit.

The US stopped giving weapons to Ukraine a while back. Anything Ukraine get they've paid for. So if Trump stops 'helping' Ukraine there won't much difference on the weapons front.

However, Trump is now threatening to stop intelligence sharing with the people who have destroyed a large chunk of the military power of the US's main adversary for a tiny fraction of the US military budget.

France and private companies also have spy satellites.

As for US intelligence , as Yes Minister? put it "The ship of state is the only known vessel that leaks from the top"

He must be a Russian agent because otherwise the Ukrainians would have bought him off by now.

Trump can start putting American interests first. And this means ensuring that Ukraine wins and wins fast. I am not saying that Ukraine can take all the territories back right now. But if Ukraine is flooded with weapons and given the permission to use medium-range missiles, Putin will sue for peace very fast. This will be in the best interests of the USA and may bring Trump the long coveted Nobel Peace prize.

At the moment, Trump acts as Putin's bitch, not as a president of the most powerful state who can dictate his will to the world.

"France and private companies also have spy satellites"

We need this to be true (and sufficient)

I have heard that the loss of US intelligence would hit Ukraine hard(as well as dragging US's reputation further into the pigswill)

maybe Trump can hand back Alaska to Putin as a sign of good faith .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 356 ✭✭somenergy

The alternative never tried there have been no new weapons or aid under felons rule.

Give Ukraine similar weapons been used on Ukraine by Russia

Putin called trump when tomahawks where mentioned but US have other long range deadly weapons

Felon is underwater on everything in his TACO ruination of US like he did with his casinos

Could not agree more. It will take us time to wean off the US from a defense standpoint. But it's quite clear that that is exactly what we need to be doing. If there was any doubt about it this latest act of backstabbing of its allies by the Americans when it comes to this sell out to the Russian dictatorship euphemistically called a peace plan leaves no doubt that the days when any of us in Europe can trust the Americans to be allies and partners are over. The Americans simply cannot be trusted in fact even worse than that they have shown again quite clearly they will happily stab so called allies in the back whenever they feel like it and cozy up to dictators.

The Americans are certainly no longer a reliable partner and certainly cannot be trusted at all.
