Australia wobbling here, 30/3, Smith and Labuschagne out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,093 ✭✭✭Xander10

Smith gone, 3 down, this will be over by Sunday at this rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,918 ✭✭✭MFPM

Khawaja gone, 31/4. The fears about the Australian top order laid bare here..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,918 ✭✭✭MFPM

Stupid shot by Head particularly in the context of the game.

Green gone now, abysmal by Australia though England have been excellent with the ball. Every chance England get a first innings lead at this rate which didn't seem probable..

Shocking batting by Australia, Starc and Carey just threw their wickets away. They're still 51 behind what was a low England total..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 331 ✭✭patob

Wow, this is the most wickets taken in a day of an Ashes Test since 1909 where both teams were all out in the same day.

Australia top order problems aren't going anywhere. Weatherald ok, that can always happen. But Labuschagne was said to have turned a corner and was batting more positively but he was back to stinking the place out. Doubt Khawaja makes it to Sydney.

Credit must go to the England bowlers as well though. No let up from any of them and made the most of the bowling friendly conditions

couldn’t believe it waking up and seeing that score by the Aussies. England have to be ruthless in the morning, on the money, nothing careless…no wides / no balls or other freebies , just nab that last wicket… lead of about 40 say and try bat up to get a good defendable lead… what a good defendable lead is I’ve literally no clue ? 🤷🏻

Stokes with 5/23 from 6 overs 😎. Some going.

A stunning 1st day, woke at 4am to see England in trouble and I feared for the series. Listened to the rest in work, gotta love how things can turn around.

Anyway, England 3 nil and Root to pick a double tonne somewhere along the way.

Stokes to retire from test cricket.

Watching highlights of the Australian innings and they were quite fortunate to not be bowled out for 70. They did not enjoy it at all. Especially Smith, got hit multiple times, wild swipes at the ball, got turned around a lot and gave a few run out chances. Pace does funny things even to the best.

Hard to analyse that day but I guess last year India were bowled out for 150 and Australia ended the first day at 67/7 so obviously it's a very difficult pitch to play on. Crucially the pitch seemed to get better as that test match went on as India scored 400+ in their second innings.

Definitely didn't look an impossible pitch to bat when England did and it felt like they drastically underperformed but Australia had a torrid final session against the England bowlers.

Just a bananas day overall, and after England and India played all 25 days of the series in the summer, we definitely aren't going to get that here.

Australia 132 all out. Lead of 40 for England . England will be delighted with that they couldn’t have envisioned a first innings lead having been skittled for so few runs so quickly in their first innings… really need to take a positive mindset without being careless… punish bad deliveries and play positively without being reckless, ie. Learn the lessons of the first innings. Score smart and frustrate The Aussies.

unreal catch, disaster for England, lose a wicket in the first over. Replay shows a very good catch but that’s a tail enders shot, real careless stuff by Crawley.

Pope needs to step up here. Only one half century in his last 10 test innings…loads of starts but no scores of note.

Pope makes 33 and then out playing a shocking effort at a shot… wide and cutable, not a good delivery at all but he managed to edge it and is caught behind. Brook now gone quickly after, England in dire straights.. mostly of their own making.. few balls later Root chops on ffs 😅 like a house of cards wickets tumbling

Smith given out by DRS.. tiny mound on snicko but not as the ball is adjacent to the bat.. dodgy decisions on field and in the stand. Aussies barley celebrate, almost too embarrassed...

Decided to head to bed fir few hours at lunch, England cruising 59/1, figured they'd bad to a big lead - woke up to see England 164 all out. Notwithstanding their batting issues, I didn't expect that. Australia in a great position if batting holds together, test will be done in 3 days either way.

Head opening the batting is proving a real coup here. Just hit Wood for 12 off an over. Australia scoring at almost 5 an over, using England's approach against them.

Weatherald out. A much needed breakthrough for England. It feels too little too late but given the frailty of the Aussie top order it's hard to be certain..

I think the England lower order showed the way for Australia. Be brave and aggressive, use the speed to your advantage. That's why they went with Head.

Labuschagne doesn't have that mentality though I think. Don't see him getting into double figures.

Smith should come in at 4/5 when the ball has cooled to see it out.

    Stokes getting taken for 17!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,918 ✭✭✭MFPM

Head moves to 84, whacking Archer for 6, 16 from the over. England look beaten.

Well played Travis Head! 3rd fastest century for Australia. Context of game and his recent form, opening the batting- that's some batting.

That might knock some of the arrogance out of him.

Play extended by half hour to give Australia a chance to wrap it up.

When’s the last time an Ashes match was over in two days?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,251 ✭✭✭kowloonkev

Worst ever Australian team beats England in 2 days.

8 wicket victory in 2 days. Didn't see that coming. Head 100, 50 for Labuschagne who've been both out of form. Starc bowling well and no Cummins or Hazelwood- this is a big victory to say the least. England have work to do, some of their batting is at times wreckless. Their bowling looked good in the first innings.

Incredible and mad game. Head is the perfect example of why stats and averages only tell half the story. His numbers are nothing special but so many of his innings are.

Series needed England to win here. Pink ball next with the form Starc's in and Cummins to return will be next to impossible to win. You can see why Sky can't be bothered, interest will fall off a cliff if they go two down.

Funny to see how the has beens in the England media will react to this. They were beaten by a lad making a 69 ball hundred afterall. They can't exactly say we need Boycott and Tavare out there.

Oh dear that's gotta hurt. Probably gonna be a long tour for England.

Marnus has 5 centuries in state cricket this season

England batsmen didn’t show up in either innings, their bowlers didn’t show up in the 4th innings, hopeless bowling, desperate performance by England. Really bad.

The worry is looks like there is pretty much nothing in the way of personnel changes that will produce a turn around. They need more runs yet they’ve only got Bethell in reserve. They packed the squad with bowlers 😖

That in hindsight is really shocking leadership and management from Stokes and McCullum. Batsmen injured or out of form, you’ve got a so far erratic, inexperienced and unreliable Bethell, nobody else. A 22 year old all rounder… 8 test match innings and 3 half centuries…. No tonnes, averages about 30. Maybe he is viewed as having ‘potential’, potential won’t win you an ashes series, what he might produce in say 18 months isn’t available now by the looks of things.

Batsmen : Stokes, Brook, Crawley, Duckett, Root, Smith(wk), Pope.

    All Rounders : Bethell, Jacks…

Bowlers : Archer, Atkinson, Bashir, Carse, Potts, Tongue, Wood

Basically they’ve left themselves a specialist batsman short. That’s down to Stokes and McCullum and nobody else. Was it necessary to select Jacks and Bashir ?

Nothing about the decision making of McCullum & Stokes makes the slightest sliver of sense.
