I'd take the two semi-final format over the 2004-2007 one semi-final format any day. The mid-2000s were a pretty low time for the contest, partly because you countries sending an excellent song one year, scoring well and guaranteeing themselves a final spot for the following year, then they'd send a piece of rubbish the following year, while good songs were left behind in the semi-final. The introduction of a second semi-final in 2008 solved that.

There's no way the contest could go back to being a one-night event, unless there was a mass exodus.

What is a big problem for the contest, though (apart from the obvious one), is how bloated the grand final has become. It was 4 hours 10 minutes in Basel this year, which is far too long. We don't need four interval acts and an hour-long televoting window, not when you can vote all through the show. If you like a song and want to vote for it, you're going to do that after 10 minutes at most, not 58 minutes after the lines open. Appreciate it's a small issue for the EBU right now, but they need to get the show wrapped up sooner.

In bizarre news, Canada are apparently looking to join Eurovision

If this is true then I imagine the EBU will bite their hand off and invite them to participate for the 70th anniversary, just like Australia were invited for the 60th anniversary in a 'one off special' 😉

Eurovision 2026 has its first participant.

I’m sure you now by know that the official Eurovision app/social media accounts are getting you to vote in the ‘Eurovision Awards 2025’.

This made me chuckle…Mamagama in the ‘Certified Banger’ category! 😲

If there was a category for ‘Squeakiest Vocal And Weedy Song Fade-Out’, they’d be a shoe-in! 😁

(Why isn’t ‘Ich Komme’ in there? 😞)

New rules implemented for next year in regards to voting…

Hmm…wonder which country this applies to.

    🤔

So juries are returning to the SF's, maximum viewer votes are reduced from 20 to 10, number of people on the juries increase from 5 to 7 and there'll be enhanced technical safeguards to prevent vote rigging. All good stuff tbh, but it doesn't address the question of Israel's continued presence. Clearly an effort to placate broadcasters and quell dissent.

I agree with the EBU for once, these are sensible rule changes and I'm especially glad to see the juries back in the semi-finals and jury size increased (should have been increased to 16 though.) However, as @yerwanthere123 has pointed out, the elephant in the room has been ignored.

Israel will be there in Vienna, now I just hope that the countries that said they'd boycott will stand strong and keep to their word.

EDIT: just to add, I've seen nothing about a reduced voting window, which is a shame. Viewers don't need an hour after the final song to vote, and they also don't need four intervals.

EBU general assembly begins today, so we'll have a decision on Israel either later today or tomorrow. As I've mentioned previously I doubt the EBU will allow any circumstance in which they'll be thrown out, so we'll see whether those threatening withdrawal will stick to it.

I'd be reasonably confident that Ireland, Spain and Slovenia will withdraw, beyond that I'm not sure.

One would imagine that the EBU would be very reluctant to let this go to a vote. Even if Israel 'won' the vote, there would presumably be a considerable number voting to exclude them and the EBU wouldn't want people knowing how unpopular Israel and KAN are among the broadcasters.

I think we all know what the outcome will be.

Spain and Slovenia have reiterated in the last few days that they will not be at Eurovision 2026 if Israel is. I assume we'll stick to it as well. The Netherlands looks a bit more wobbly. Iceland seems to be good at talking but poor at actually doing something, but apparently interest is low in applying to their national final so that might force them to do something. A Dutch friend tells me that if it was a VRT (Dutch) year for Belgium, they would definitely be out, but because it's an RTBF (French) year, it's less likely.

I'm very disappointed seeing some people on Bluesky, some of whom have been very strong about kicking Israel out, still getting exciting about Vienna. There were quite a few "Israel is committing is genocide in Gaza BUT OMG SANNA NIELSEN IS COMING BACK TO MELODIFESTIVALEN"-type posts yesterday.

Well well well, it looks like a vote will be happening, and it'll be today! 8 broadcasters have requested a secret vote on Israeli participation, surpassing the minimum threshold of 5.

Excellent that a vote is back on and it's going to be more than a "discussion." I'm curious though about the eight broadcasters who asked for a vote…as it would suggest there were more broadcasters unhappy about Israeli participation than expected, but didn't make a public statement. Unless of course, a pro-Israel broadcaster such as ARD or ORF was among the eight, hoping that by winning a vote, Israeli participation in Vienna would have more legitimacy ("Well, you had the chance to vote them out and you didn't so you can't complain anymore about Israel being here.")

I think a lot of countries who may have previously voted to kick out Israel, but would have been squeamish about doing so, will now hang their hat on the fact that there is officially a ceasefire in Gaza. They'll ignore the continuous breaking of that ceasefire by the IDF, the unchecked rampaging of settlers in the West Bank and the apartheid status of Palestinians in the occupied territories. Many countries don't want to kick them out and now they have a fig-leaf of peace to keep them in.

I'm a fan of the Eurovision but i hope that we don't enter. I'm not even going to say "If Israel get kicked out" because sadly they won't be kicked out.

There's two votes happening*, one on the new rules proposed by the EBU and another on Israeli participation. The new rules vote has already taken place with the result due soon.

    • Edit: This later tuned out to be incorrect, the EBU only held the first vote

The votes being secret isn't great news for Israel, but still can't see them being kicked out. And even if they were, don't think this would be the end of it.

Thing is, the genocide shouldn't even come into each country's deliberations about whether to vote Israel out or not. What should be the deciding factor is that Israel has manipulated the vote for the past two years and clearly broken the rules. Regardless of what they're doing in Palestine, they should be kicked out for that behaviour over the last two years.

The fact it's a secret ballot gives me some hope. Apparently, Israel wanted an open vote, no surprise there.

Israel are unsurprisingly in. The Netherlands have already withdrawn.

Ireland next and hopefully some more. That's pretty much the end of the Eurovision now, let the Israeli scum and their fanboys to it. No need to broadcast it anymore.

I'm sure by 6pm Slovenia will have confirmed it's out too. Hope RTÉ confirms shortly too.

I admit I had a little bit of hope an hour ago.

Well done to RTÉ. Not often they deserve praise, but they've done well here 👏

Hopefully Iceland and Finland will go too. Even if 20 countries withdrew it probably wouldn't matter to the EBU, but it'd be nice to make them sweat a bit.

Exactly, as hard as the news is to hear, there's the consolation that we're on the right side of history.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,933 ✭✭✭Brussels Sprout

I'm confused. What happened to the secret vote?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭supereurope

It appears the EBU made that vote conditional on the first vote, the one on the new rules, not passing. When the first vote passed, the EBU said, "Well, it seems you're all happy now to keep participating, no need for further voting."

    This explains it pretty well:

I can't say I am surprised, probably the correct decision. Hopefully more join us in withdrawing.

Spain will likely have the biggest impact financially I would guess as they are one of the big 5?

Netherlands also withdrawing I would expect a few more.

I am sure Moroccan oil will step up and provide a few more bucks...

It was a secret vote around whether or not Israel could compete.

Spain, Ireland and Slovenia. What's with former fascistic Catholic countries and their dislike of Israel.

    🙈🙉🙊

It's all a bit unclear. Seems the EBU decided that voting in favour of the new rules meant that a vote on Israeli participation was no longer needed.

    https://x.com/eurovisionfn/status/1996631200283480175?t=97tc0sKUNeG8UZOLYpR7Gw&s=19

A bit of gerrymandering, basically. They were never going to let Israel be excluded.
