There are a few believe it or not. Trump Not instigating wars, giving the BBC a comeuppance. A very smug sanctimonious and subtly jingoistic organisation.

Trump is more focused on trade deals and American self interest. Less American interference in the world. Allows the EU etc a chance to fill the vacuum. If the EU is smart it should start positioning itself to do so.

Personally I don’t tune into Kenny for Trump stuff. That has been done to death. It bores me.

I dip in cases like the Irish Presidential elections where Kenny was by far the most astute and well prepared interviewer. He didn’t let any candidate away with bluffers answers or obfuscation.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

It's a public service to spotlight what Trump & Co. are doing to the US .

If you stop being annoyed it just helps to normalize the madness.

Not instigating wars? He bombed Iran! Hes threatened military action against Nigeria and Venezula as well as hinting at invading Greenland.

He hasn't made a single real trade deal. His tariffs on other countries has resulted in increased prices for US consumers. He claims the tariffs are bringing in trillions but the real figure is 88 billion all paid for by the US.

No boots on the ground invasions etc. Was a “war” declared? Sure Bill Clinton bombed Somalia etc rarely mentioned these days.

Under Trump there is a notable no policy of “regime change” in countries which don’t align with American interests.
It has been the modus operandi of many American Presidents to force Regime change. Either covertly or overtly American administrations in the past have caused the overthrow of even democratically elected sovereign states where it suits their purpose. Chile in the 70’s, Iran in the 50’s, Iraq in the 90’s.

Trump does not have an interest in that it seems. As for Pat Kenny’s obsession with Trump, I just tune out. We are in Ireland, Irish and EU issues exercise me far more.

Trump and America is a distant sideshow as far as I am concerned. Some Irish people get so wrapped up in Trump, you would think they are American.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

There are a few believe it or not. Trump Not instigating wars,

He's literally in the middle of instigating one right now with Venezuela.

tldr, Pat Kenny is bombing Venezuela? I though newstalk left that sort of thing to Henry McCean

Irish media have a public service to cover Irish affairs, not American.

If you still find yourself annoyed about Trump 10 years on, then there's something wrong with you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,567 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Yeah Venezuela will go to war with America to keep their drug trade going . Please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,248 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Plus Trump will be gone from the limelight in a few years. Pat Kenny will likely be still there.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

No offence, but this reads like you didn't read a bit of US politics news in the last 12 months since Trump was elected.

Not instigating wars? The US attacked and bombed Iran to wipe out their Nuclear program (which was being monitored by the terms of the treaty Trump pulled out of in his first term.

American self interest? He gave Argentina 40B while American farmers were in dire straits.

Less American interfence in the world? He's killing Venezuelans in the Caribbean with half the US Navy sitting ready to launch land incursions to oust their President. He's told the Army to get ready for action in Nigeria.

Do you know what a war is? No offence. The definition of a war. And I do realise you live in America and are more American than Irish. Fair enough. I have read “What’s the matter with Kansas?” Years ago. America is NOT Ireland. Different values, different mindsets.

A bit of realism about.Trump needs to be said. He is a great self marketer knows how to get his vote out. How many people get two terms in America as President? Even more impressive still two terms with a defeat in the middle.

If America gets involved in regime change under your President’s administration then I will say you are correct. And hold my hands up. But Trump doesn’t want the usual pointless wars America have fought historically Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan etc etc

The truth is Trump is an isolationist. “America first” Which is what the majority American people want. Similar to when De Valera was first in government with FF.

    —-

As I said I don’t pay heed to Kenny on Trump. He doesn’t like the guy and can’t fathom how he has succeeded.
To me Pat Kenny would be better to focus on Irish or EU issues. In my opinion. EU issues and minutiae are not discussed on the Irish media enough. And Irish MEP’s should be held to more account by Irish media.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Yeah Pat Kenny can't even retire properly - he's moving to the weekends.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,567 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

That American poster just wants to derail thread with usual boring Trump lines.

Americans only seem to agree with bombing other countries if it's the person they voted for doing it. And they are too arrogant to think otherwise.

It's a global community and the US is an important part of it.

Over 30 million Americans are of Irish descent, there's hardly an Irish family that hasn't a relation there.

I won't say there's something wrong with you but if you're not annoyed at the damage Trump is doing you need to pay more attention.

Let's use the definition of war as what seems to be understood by Trump who claims to have ended 8 of them since he came to office. By that definition, his actions against Iran and Venezuela would both constitute war.

Trump is one of the most significant political individuals in our lifetimes, that's just a fact irrespective of how bad he is at the job, and he has impacted societies and governance (and more besides) in several countries worldwide, including Ireland. Pat Kenny hosts a current affairs show, he is 100% right to cover Trump in the context in which he does.

Also, not that it matters, I no longer live in America and even if I did, would still not consider Trump as my President. I didn't consider him or Biden as my President while I lived there. I am Irish and Catherine Connolly is my President irrespective of where I live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,567 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Discussions about Trump on Irish media are utterly pointless.

Most families do not have Irish family in America.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,431 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

You've been saying this for 10 years at this point.

Aside from Trump just being an interesting topic, he is impactful worldwide both directly, and indirectly in that he has influenced the political discourse in a that is felt in Ireland as well as in many other countries.

It's not 1860, you don't have to be living somewhere or have family there to be impacted by what is happening there.

"Bland, boring, woke, soft is what we get now from current crop of presenters. Everything is sanitised in case someone is "offended". So we are stuck in a spin cycle of the same policitians, the same policies the same faux apologies………and we wonder why we have a housing crisis, a health crisis, appalling water infrastructure etc ?"

I do think interviews with politicians these days are polite chats with a buddy, not a grilling, they get away with waffling about "learnings", "root and branch reviews" and similar meaningless twaddle when mildly chided on their performance.

Similarly, when gentlemen of a certain ethnic background invaded farmers land with lurchers I think I do recall PK discussing this. The likes of saintly, squeaky clean, Shane Coleman would run a mile from such topics. Lecturing the rest of us on taking the bike to work or putting our recycling in the correct bins is his comfort zone.

    How is it "pointless?"

If he attempts a major peace deal or slaps on a tariff are we supposed to ignore it here?

A hell of a lot of people have relatives of one kind or another in the states, and trumps tariffs may have a bearing on what gifts they can post over to them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,567 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

If it affects Ireland, there's a point. Otherwise it's pointless. But we have a generation in the Irish media who think knowing everything about American politics makes them sophisticated - Pat Kenny and Matt Cooper are the two worst eijets when it comes to this.

On topic, do we know when Pat is transitioning to weekends? And has it been confirmed that it's a like for like replacement with Anton's show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 543 ✭✭✭Mr.CoolGuy

I wonder does Cuddihy moving on suddenly have a knock-on effect on this. I wouldn't have been surprised if he was going to be offered Pat's spot (he might even have used that as leverage for RTE).

I don't think I'll tune into Anton as much.

Claire Byrne had already been hired to replace Pat...

The announcement said in the Spring.

There was talk of February at the time.

Pat Kenny's Newstalk show moving to weekends next year https://share.google/WvO9GeH5P6OyoSRxj

Pat is on fire this morning, ‘President Ignoramus’ and ‘Steve Half-Witkoff’. Having none of Trump’s, ridiculous, peace deal.

I presume Pat has no trips to the US planned for the immediate future. ICE might be waiting for him. 🙂
