So I have been looking at 32" TV's and noticed on one of them the Satellite input on the TV itself and would like to know if people have used it and if so does it pick uf UK FTA channels?

I am currently using a Humax FTA connected to my 32" TV via HDMI port

I have a Sharp 32" with built in sat. No problem picking up UK channels.

I have been using those type sets, a variety of brands, for about 10 years, no problem picking up UK tv channels. Two issues worth noting, one is UK epg, most are just now and next epg, LG sets allow Freesat, with 7 day epg but with the newer sets there can be drawbacks. The other issue is one channel list, with LG and Samsung you have to change sources, generally not difficult, Vestel tvs have Saorview and satellite on one list.

I have a Sony Bravia and found channels all over the place and just went my way back to Zgemma H7S and a handy 7 day epg.

With most Lg tv's you can set up quick switch so you only have to long press a button for a second or 2 and it switches between sources and apps so it's fairly quick.

For TVs with a satellite input, you're best to set them up with UK as the region. That will enable the proper Freesat tuner with the 7 day EPG. Your Saorview channels will be scattered in the 800s but that's the lesser of two evils compared to scattered/duplicate satellite channels with only now/next EPG.

Thanks for the quick replies folks, I didn't realise that some TV's have built in Satellite tuners so that is something to consider, the FreeSat tuner with the EPG is handy and as mentioned in the last post I could live with Saorview channels scattered.

It would mean one less device to look after. I am assuming recordings from Satellite got to your USB device, be it USB Stick or HDD?

I am looking at this Philips 32PFS6900 €250 on Richersounds.ie. Main reason for this one was the three HDMI for DVD, Firestick and Humax!

Buy the LG it will also have 3 hdmi, Phillips tvs wont have a dedicated Freesat epg. The majority of new tvs nowadays come with satellite tuners for free to air channel's but LG have freesat. As mentioned earlier the Vestal tvs such as Walker and Nordmende are user friendly they have irish and uk channels on the same screen/list. Updated channel lists for vestal tvs such as walker and nordmende are available on these threads. The likes of Phillips, Sharp, Samsung, Sony, TCl etc etc they all have free to air satellite tuners but its a procedure to move between Irish and uk channels, some of them will allow you to setup a favorites list, but once a frequency changes for the satellite channels then you're back to retuning the tv and reordering channel numbers.

Lg tvs that are set to the UK and are setup properly will allow you quick button access between irish and uk channels,

    Are you living alone ?

Reason I ask is that I went on a long seemingly never ending shopping spree trying to sort out a TV for the kitchen when what I should have done first was ask everyone what was required.

The Missus insisted she didnt care , so I just bought a walker knowing it had everything on one list.

" Wheres the 7 day EPG says the missus " , I thought you said you didnt care about that stuff I said , " Ah but FFS a 7 day EPG is basic stuff she says , No its not I says …… . and on , and on …..

Long story short , ended up buying a box for the kitchen too.

And the ONLY good thing about walker TVs is that list , otherwise its just a sucky Vestel TV that claims to be UHD HDR but doesnt have the range to show HDR.

I could have gotten an LG for the same money , and would have if Id known.

So , sit everyone who is going to be using the thing down , and work out a minimum spec , assume they know nothing , but find out what they are expecting. Save yourself the ridiculous journey I went on.

Nope myself and the missus and this is our main viewing TV!! I know I know tiny in comparison to what people are buying nowadays . EPG is important as i do record quite a bit from BBC4 on Friday nights onto my 500GB HDD on the Humax Box.

So was thinking of the Philips 3 x HDMI and the AmbiLight but now gonna look at the LG

Ask her what she expects ! Assume she knows nothing , explain what a 7 day EPG is , etc etc etc .

It will save a lot of heartache.

Can't seem to find an LG 32" with 3 x HDMI ports! Do you know a model that has?

Just to add, I have 3 Vestel TVs in the house, Walker and Toshiba.

These TVs have a combined Saorview/FTA satellite list. Satellite channels start at 300.

The satellite channel list can be transferred between TVs. I regularly upload my list here.

Do you need 3 HDMI ports though? You said it was for a DVD player, Firestick and Humax, which I assume is a satellite box already? So if you got an LG TV with freesat you wouldn't need to connect the Humax anymore anyway…

Yes thinking of that too and my plum for a TV with two HDMIs only but thinking of the option with the third HDMI port if, for example, wasn't happy with recording options from Satellite.

But agree using the Sat1 input opens up other (2 x HDMI on) TV's, what I realised when I went looking is that most smaller TVs only offering 2 x HDMI

Question: Has anyone seen a 37" Smart TV for sale? I have an older 37" Plasma Panny in other room so this size was available before (This TV is ancient BTW, 10years+) but I think options are 24", 32", 40" no 37"

Just as regards recording, I had been using a I Tb HDD to record on a Walker tv, I changed to an LG tv earlier this year and the LG won't recognise the HDD. I am currently using a 64gb stick, works fine, we generally watch and delete recording, keeping nothing rather than filling the stick.

Another gripe we have with the LG is viewing recordings, sorry for repeating myself but I think it's worth noting. We have to wait until a recording is finished before viewing, whereas on the Walker we could view a recording from the start while it was still recording. Another issue is that while the tv is recording it's not possible to change channel, which is standard on such tvs, so a fallback is the LG streaming channels, which can be viewed or any of the apps, Netflix etc. I keep a combo box connected as a workaround option. I know its possible to set up systems that allow multiple recordings but that's beyond me and a bit unnecessary for our needs

An older 37" TV is probably going to have a similar footprint as a 40" now with smaller bezels and stuff. So if you are limited with space, you might still be able to get a bigger TV than expected…

am very limited with space tbh. It’s an old Rossmore unit ( if you old enough to remember them) with a cabinet on top and in alcove by fireplace so 37” I could squeeze in and I mean squeeze in - 40” and I need to remove top display cabinet and viewing would be restricted to certain parts of the room

yeah I think I had some issues with another TV where it wild not recognise a 500GB HDD but would recognise a 128GB USB stick so a small reason why I would keep to using a Humax for Satelite
