I don't think anyone outside the Democratic party would oppose Clinton getting investigated and charge if necessary. I think it says a lot when people assume that anyone who criticises Trump would automatically support child molesters if they have the same political opinions. I remember harshly criticising Stanley Johnson and someone responded, telling me that he voted to stay in the EU.

I cant wait to read it when someone who was in the White House in this presidency eventually writes a tell all book...

that reminded me of this speech… he really is a terrible human.

how the americans voted for him, is beyond me.

And that's the unfortunate thing about it all. People who could speak up now, aren't. They'll instead hold on to everything and release a book when it's too late to have actually done anything about it, because they care more about their own future profits than doing the right thing while they have the opportunity to do so.

Mike Johnson was apparently 'concerned' because the Senate passed the bill without allowing him and his pals to make any amendments.

Would need an American expert to confirm this, but suspect you are wrong about releasing of the files being a bar to prosecution. Seems more of an Irish/UK thing - sub judice rules etc.

But in America before prosecution - they do handcuffed perp walks, they have interviews with neighbours saying how they knew the suspect was a shifty wrong-un, they talk on TV about previous convictions and the obvious guilt of the suspect. Hard to see how in that environment that releasing files would be an issue?

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

It’s simply not an issue- Trump could have released all files up to now had he wanted to - he obviously didn’t want to and it’s pizzing off a number of MAGA d1cks which is just wonderful to see

I don't think Newsom would be a good presidential but I do enjoy his barbs at Trump.

Trump can instruct his cronies to start investigating Clinton and then use the investigation as a pretext to close the rest of the files as releasing them would interfere with the instigation. I think this is the possible explanation why Trump suddenly appears to back releasing of Epstein files — he would say that the files are released to the DOJ, they are being used in the investigation, there is no cover, fake news, hey look, we are invading Venezuela.

At the moment the Dems have nobody else in the possible running when the time comes.

Its about a year out from when all that will start again, Democrats will want to do a proper internal caucus first…would be amazed if Kamala doesnt throw her hat in the ring, think Newsom will, he's already positioning himself as the defacto president internationally, attending the COP sessions when Trump wouldnt, California is a lock anyway for Dems but he might drag in Nevada, I think what they need is a Shapiro or someone for vice and get Pennsylvania back on side, possible outsider would be JB Pritzker, but he has more of a personal issue with Trump, so if Trump wasnt running then I dont think he would…AOC as vice maybe is an option but again she's from a pretty solid blue state as it is and can be a bit divisive. The Dems need to find someone from the Georgia, Florida area, they are giving up so many votes down there.

If the Dems are stupid enough to put forward Harris again, then they might as well not even contest the election at all. Americans are not going to put her in the White House.

There's still some time to go, but at the moment Newsom is the only one looking like he has potential. In the next election the Republicans, and especially the remnants of MAGA, will fight dirty (again) and the Dems are going to need someone with a bit of wit to counter their bullshit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,421 ✭✭✭✭ancapailldorcha

I disagree. The way things are going, I think most Americans would vote for any Democrat at this point. By most, I mean 51-53% so just about technically true.

And Newsom has a book coming out, which you can be sure covers a lot of his past, so getting that out there so he has nothing to hide as it were…nobody wants to be the democratic front runner at this stage so far out…but if Newsom has any ambition for the top job this might be his only chance

Wall Street Journal has an overview of communications in the Epstein files, Trump gets mentioned a lot.

It'll all depend on how the midterms go. If Republicans magically happen to keep their seats then I don't think we'll see any big Democrat name run, as it might be a lost cause already.

If Democrats win big however I'm sure the usual names already mentioned will try to capitalise on that.

Politicians like AOC are exactly what Americans need but sadly they're too racist, sexist and undereducated to realise it.

I don't rate Newsom too highly myself. He undoubtedly has a decent social media team and has given them the rights to really go in hard over Trump, even though it's ultimately meaningless and performative, no matter how funny it may be.

But at the very least, properly bringing forward the ability to redistrict California to undo any gains by Texas gerrymandering was the type of move the Democrats need to do. The rest of the Dems like Schumer, Jeffries, Pelosi et al seem more than happy to stand on the sidelines and shout "He's not really supposed to do that!" when Trump and the GOP break rules or at least long-standing traditions and norms. The Dems need to show they can and will fight back.

The Dems have so little ability to enforce "checks and balances" given the GOP have the Presidency, House and Senate and have shown they have no qualms about ignoring the rules and letting Trump do what he wants. The Dems need to take what action they can, when they can. Newsom is at least doing that.

And once again, the Dems will be held to an incredibly high standard, whilst consumed with in-fighting and poor tactics, while being compared to the latest disgusting individual wheeled out by the Paedo protectors.

Newsom is far, far too 'corporate" IMHO. Yes he will poll well but he is far too beholden to the interests of corporations and big money.
Not entirely his fault and it is an unfortunate consequence of the diminishing value of social responsibility in the US in the wake of decisions such as Citizens United, Fairness Doctrine and the ever growing partisanship in media and politics.

I think Shapiro could be a formidable candidate, as would Pritzker, both are incredibly effective communicators and both manage to connect with people outside their State's too.

The weird thing for me is that so much fragmentation still exists within the Dems.
The lack of coherence amongst them in opposing Trump and the absolute corrupt and grifting con scheme that MAGA and the GOP are?
    Is baffling.
The battle for the soul of a nation is being ignored and long fingered, in the hope it can be avoided.
In the hope that they won't have to take a meaningful stand.
The surrender on the shut down is a prime example of that, the Dems need to build a consensus amongst their caucus and stick to it.
They need to stop compromising with arsonists.

    BREAKING:

The Senate has just received the Epstein Files Transparency Act. It now heads to Trump's desk for his signature.

By all accounts, the Speaker was caught very much off guard by the speed at which the matter passed through, as he had plans on amendments being proposed which would have slowed it all down.

Understandably, people believe that it will be tied up by the DOJ and/or redacted, but there are threats by 2 Congress members that they'll use privilege to read information out in Congress.

It's all incredible pressure being applied to Throatus, which can only be a good thing

F*ck me - the desperation is tangible at the white House.

Its website is updated to include under "major events" the Bill Clinton sex scandal, a page falsely accusing Obama of hosting a "terrorist organization," a photo of a naked Hunter Biden in a bathtub linked to finding cocaine at the White House and a photo of a trans female who went topless during an event.
