He has vanished from the news completely and is pretty much forgotten already. The word is, RTE offerd him weekdays 1pm till 4pm on RTE Gold for 50k a year but he refused and called the offer "an insult" so he's probably grand financially if he can say no to 50k a year. He must be kicking himself for leaving Today FM in the first place ? Ian Dempsey and Matt Cooper are in the same slots for eons, so chances must be high that D'Arcy would still be there too if he never left?

Where does the story about RTE Gold come from?

Would his show have continued as it was, though? Could he have been moved to some other time slot? Who knows? I do have a feeling that Bauer would have dropped the show, maybe much to Ray's annoyance. He might have ended up leaving even if RTE hadn't come calling.

he was getting a bit old for Today fm’s audience

Not a fan of Ray, but I wouldn't believe a word of him being offered 50k a year. Didn't happen.

The only station really left for him to go would be classic hits

Nah, that show was incredibly popular, what with fix it Friday and the odd one out quiz and loads of listener interaction. But he sold his soul to the devil and ended up staler than last week's bread on RTE.

No sympathy for how he ended up, money isn't everything.

From what I remember, his show was on the slide but was still doing alright numbers-wise. He had become crankier, but the format kept him in check. It's impossible to tell whether Today FM would've canned his show, but they struggled to replace him for quite some time after he left.

RTE has always been the end goal for many presenters, so I don't see him as the bad guy for taking over Derek Mooney's old show, and being given the chance to appear on RTE. Many people would argue that his limitations were exposed but that's on RTE for offering him the deal in the first place, not him for taking it.

I think he should revive The Den with Zig and Zag. I've never understood why RTE didn't commission more episodes of the reboot they did during Covid. It was pretty good, and surely can't cost that much to produce. Maybe Virgin Media might like to pick it up?

A friend in the know mentioned to me some time ago that one of the prime factors in his being brought back by RTÉ was that senior management were fully aware that his loss to Today FM would create a massive problem for the then Communicor group. Yes they were happy to bring him back but they they could have gone with cheaper and newer for a show at a time when economies were required. Truth be known they were very much on the ball here as Today have struggled to fill Ray's void and it will have cost them a lot of ad revenue into the bargain.

As regards his future? I actually wouldn't be awfully surprised if he returns to Today FM in the next 12 months but I'd be far less surprised if he doesn't return. D'Arcy will have more name power than either Foley or Cantillon when it comes to nuzzling the ad agencies teats but the wider Bauer group in Ireland are trusting the talent that was bred in house, not to mention that he will not come as cheap as whomever he replaces. Q would be an outside bet given some of their recent recruitments having a little more name power but if they want to play out is another story.

Then again, Ray is of an age where he might just call quits. Or worse yet, dust out his Maplin speakers and go out doing mobiles again.

He didn't leave Today FM on good terms, though that could all be water under the bridge now. Ray Foley came back, and he was messed around by previous management. The question is, does Today FM want to bring a 61-year-old man into the fold? Apart from Ian Dempsey and Matt Cooper, who've been there forever, everyone else is much younger. When those two move on, their replacements won't be 60.

I'd be surprised if Ray doesn't work again. He's not to everyone's taste as we know, but I doubt it's the last we've seen of him.

Could easily see him doing holiday cover for Sean Moncrieff or Tom Dunne if he wanted to. I’m sure he could cover for Oliver Callan if he hadn’t stropped off. He can always finally get around to emigrating like he said he said he would a dozen years ago

Mod - other posters aren't the topic, some posts deleted

The thread was moved from AH so the OP can't reply.

I honestly don't think he could cover for any of them GSF. I don't think he's capable of doing the research for interviews and I don't think he has the mindset, constantly interrupting and pushing his own opinions.

the stupidly titled HEAD OF AUDIO (it's bloody radio at the end of the day !!!) said something was offered to him at the time of Radio 1 departure that was not on Lyric or not on Radio 1, so people guessed it was RTE Gold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 98 ✭✭Cmx95

It could of been a podcast

The OP knows a lot more than that. They must have inside information from Ray or from RTE.

"The word is, RTE offerd him weekdays 1pm till 4pm on RTE Gold for 50k a year"

50k a year for a station that doesn't bring in any revenue and more then likely it would been pre recorded so one days work

The current shift rate is 200 quid per show for freelancers so a five day a week shift with holiday leave could leave you at about 50k a year.

"Will Ray D'Arcy ever work again ?"

When has Gray @®$€¥ ever worked?

I will be boycotting anything he appears on. He's a very dislikeable person, putting it mildly. I always had to change the station at the end of Liveline or to turn off the radio. There was a small reprieve when he was let go, but now it's the same story, as Louise Duffy is on in his place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,057 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

One of Ray's producers neil doherty (saturday sounds) is now producing the louise duffy show. I heard before that she did not have a producer, that must have changed along the way…… or else they needed to give neil a new job.

I wonder what happened the others who worked on ray's show ?

Any ####end can be a podcaster. Vogue Williams described herself as a podcaster as her profession for I'm a Celebrity...GMOOH.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 914 ✭✭✭TheBMG

that’s a fairly accurate description of Vogue seeing that she’s hosted two very successful podcasts and sold out 5 nights at the Point Theatre with one of them.

Should never have lasted 11 weeks, let alone 11 years.

Then there's a lot of very sad people out there. That's just my opinion.

No way could he cover for Oliver Callan. Or if he did everyone would turn off. He doesn't have the wit of Oliver Callan or the current affairs knowledge. Instead of reviewing the headlines he'd be telling people about porridge and his latest sour dough bread.
