what is lyca fair usage policy for data?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 610 ✭✭✭bondja80

what about fair usage policy for internet? I am using sim card in router to stream tv channels.

I use 25gb or more per day. will lyca slow down internet sped? do they have 5g internet, or just 4g?

Doesn't specify any data limit but specifically calls out sim to go into a phone and not a modem. Also hot spotting called out as a no no

I use Eir mobile 30 day contract. It's €21.99 per month. But have noticed the data speeds are getting progressively worse over last year or soo. I live out the country (between Galway city and Tuam) and was once upon a time able to use my mobile phone for hotspotting for work, now I really struggle to even get view some more complex websites or play YouTube clips etc.

    Two questions.

1). Is there any way to test the various providers data speeds without actually signing up with them?

2). I presume any service provider that is piggybacking on some one else's network is going to be worse than the network owner's own service (if the network is getting throttled they dump the piggy backers first)

With that in mind there's only 3 actual networks (Eir, Vodafone, Three), soo in theory at least these guys should have the fastest data speeds and best coverage. Anybody any views?

Three is easy, get a 48 sim and you get 1Gb to play with.

Vodafone, no easy method to be honest. Ask a friend.

I left gomo because speeds were getting worse and worse even with full 5G bars

    Gomo use Eir network

    Tesco use Three network

I done this too and regret it, speeds are genuinely worse than 4g and can cut out completely for short periods, which I never had before. You can't go back to the 9.99 plan too, I asked their complaints department. Not sure what to do now. I remember being on Vodafone and never had issues with speed or roaming, are they still good clear and an post use them apparently

I knew once I left the 9.99 plan there was no going back, I was happen to take the chance as I was about to pull the trigger and switch to Clear for 12.99 anyway, so I actually had nothing to lose. One of my sons is currently with Clear and he moved from gomo and he's saying his service is way better since moving, I will probably try it out and see for myself in the next month or two, all I can confirm is, I have noticed a big deterioration with the quality of GoMo's service be it on the 9.99 or the 12.99 plans, especially around roaming over the last 18 months.

Good to know about clear. I'll prob make the move myself. Gomo said I can order a new sim which might help with speeds but I don't hold much hope, I'll try it out and if not Clear it is!

Likewise. I totally regret going to the "fast" 5g....

"specifically calls out sim to go into a phone and not a modem. Also hot spotting called out as a no no"

Despite what they say, this contravenes EU regulations (EECC) but Comreg will just ignore such breaches.

"Vodafone, no easy method to be honest."

VF PAYG SIMs are free from their web shop, they ask for payment card details but don't charge it unless credit is added to the order, it'll show up as zero payment and delivery is free.
You can then buy 5GB add on for €5 to try it out. No recurring commitment as it's PAYG.

signed up with gomo yrs back for 10e a month, been all over europe holidays, and motorcycle trips etc. never really had an issue, even in remote mountainous regions, italian islands etc, always had a signal, except when in Monaco - zero signal! you need an international sim i think?

I have to travel with a work ph when away or on hols, there have been times my VF network has not worked when gomo has, go figure that one.

When roaming, the signal isnt the problem, I always have signal and full 4G bars, its the data speeds that's the issue, there are loads of people saying their data speeds both roaming and non roaming are not what they used to be.

We have a few Eir mobiles in the company I work for and one of the directors now lives in Spain and he had commented on a few occasions how the data speeds on his mobile are so erratic over the last 12 months also. He retired to Spain in early 2023 and had no issues back then.

weird that, we'd use data on the motorbikes for maps and if im with my partner we'll hire cars etc on hol and even abroad recently three times this year , no issues. when i did have issues locally at home here, gomo sent me out a new sim as they said my old one wasnt up to date, made it more stable ? i dont work for gomo or anything to do with them, but i find it pretty unbeatable at 10e a month.

maybe send your mngr a gomo sim and see how he gets on ? worth a shot - even though i hear eir / gomo use same network ?

GoMo €12.99 a month now for black Friday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,306 ✭✭✭PukkaStukka

I was actively considering moving to that. I have a SIM only deal with Eir that bundles the home phone and broadband, but the mobile has guaranteed price increases each year which I'm becoming wary of. However, after reading some of the comments above about Gomo deteriorating in recent times, I think I'll give it a miss and stick with Eir because I prioritise reliability over cost. I've never had any issues with their service. With the VMNO's, could it be that these are using different tiers of the hosting network which is at a level below that at which the host uses for its own mainstream customers?

Just checked 48s speed at home inside in Shannon, surprise good.

I'm also on the old 7.99 plan. I'm not a big international user, but it works fine on an annual holiday to Spain and the odd trip to London.

I'm finding clear very patchy with a poor signal at home. I'm rural but it was never an issue with with eir.

With the current deal on gomo I've nothing to loose I suppose.

Clear Mobile reduced to €9.99pm for Black Friday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,025 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

So is it worth my while porting to 48 and porting back again? 3 quid a month adds up quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 mswift

Will that €9.99 Clear mobile deal stay at €9.99 indefinitely (for life)? Or is it likely to get increased? I'm on the €9.99 gomo plan and reluctant to switch unless that is guaranteed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,025 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

Ask chat, they're usually very good. It isn't for life tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 429 ✭✭user060916

I'm going to switch to Clear today if someone wants to send me on their referral code by PM

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,025 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

What's the cheapest way to port out and back? Can I use a free 48 without topping up? Or lyca for 9.75?

T&Cs - 2) If you avail of the Offer; you will receive the Clear Mobile €12.99 Price Plan for a discounted recurring price of €9.99 per month which will continue until your agreement with us is ended in the ways set out in our General Terms.

Your Activation Fee will also be discounted to €9.99. All other charges remain as set out in the Clear Mobile €12.99 Price Plan terms.

Would that not mean that yes it is technically for the duration of the time you stay with them as a customer, which is the same as with GoMo or 48 for example who advertised "for life" at the time, if you leave those plans, the 9.99 or 7.99 plans, you'll never be able to get back on them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,025 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

In theory though they could increase the price across the board. But why would they as everyone would move.

It won't change for a few years so worth me porting out and in

"This 9.99 euro plan offer is valid till 2nd december---- once you join under this cost then it would be same for lifetime"

The also confirmed that eSim's will be available from January
