VRT Car Export and documents needed by Revenue for refund.

I purchased a car in NI 4 months ago and it developed a serious engine fault. The garage has agreed to take the car back and give a refund. But they have insisted that I registered the car back in Northern Ireland (NI) and put it back on NI plates before I returned it. The car with its original NI number plate was still live on DVLA site in UK because the garage never notify them the it was exported to Republic of Ireland. As far as DVLA are concerned the car is still in NI and is marked as off the road (SORN). So I was able to go to DVLA and have the car transferred to my name. So I now have a V5C in my name and using the address of a relative. And the car is back on its original NI number plate. One of the documents that is needed to get a refund of VRT is "proof of a new registration number in another EU member state". However the car is back on its original NI number plate, not a new number. Will this block my refund.? Any advise on how to get around this. I exported the car by truck and have signed documents to prove the export and the garage in NI has issued me with a purchase invoice to buy the vehicle back.
