Bit of a weird one, I’m looking to sit the leaving certificate again as a mature student and I will be self teaching. I was just wondering if anybody knew if it is as simple as signing up somewhere or do I need to be enrolled on a course.

    Thanks

Head over to your ETB. They will have all the information on hand. The Adult Leaving cert at ETB has been discontinued due to lack of interest about 3 years back. I have no idea where you would get books (VTOS within ETB used to provide them free). Your local secondary school may offer you guidance and programs ("this is what our secondary students are doing this week and this is their homework"). I think Kilroys College might offer a privately run Leaving Cert.

You dont need a full leaving cert (X7 Leaving cert subjects ) to get into third level as and adult learner. Ideally an interview board are looking at Maths and English with maybe two other subjects. Alternatively you may do a ETB course (level 5) that show you have some sort of interest in the area you think you are thinking of studying. You need to show a panel that you are able to learn and that you have an interest in the area of study.

thanks for your detailed response. Strangely enough I’m retired and would like just like to give it another go. I’m not worried about points and have time to teach myself. Presumably I would need to register for an exam centre (no idea how I would do that)

The Leaving Cert is a two year course, so you really need to have sit down with a teacher to tell you whats on the curriculum. You probably need some exam coaching as well. Your Local ETB will have all the answers and they have funding for running an exam hall because there will probably be a a good few in your city or a few in your regional town.

I would be start with the ETB. Pick your subjects. I cannot advise you on doing practical or oral/aural exams. Youtube is your friend, especially if you are doing maths or Science.
