Making the play off would (I'm assuming) help with our seeding in future competitions.

If we do finish 2nd should we withdraw on this basis?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,178 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

No but it's highly unlikely we are going to finish second so it's hardly going to arise. If we do somehow sneak through, fair enough, we'll enter as the weakest team in the playoffs and give it a go. In some way that may be an achievement in itself for us. So ok I can look at it that way.

I'm just pointing out in my opinion we don't deserve to finish second based on our performances. I think so far we are the fourth best team in the group.

Maybe that will change tomorrow with an astonishing victory?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,092 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Thats an exaggeration to be fair.

Yes, we've been disappointing. But I'd say 3rd best team in the group is where we sit.

Armenia are the 4th best team in the group. A point worse off than us and they've a significantly worse goal difference. They got walloped 5-0 by Portugal already, and they still have to travel to Lisbon.

We kept Portugal at bay until something like the 91st minute.

I don't realistically expect we will make the play-off, but I still really want to see us pick up some points from the remaining fixtures

I'm bringing my 7 year old to his first game tomorrow. Is there anyway ot meeting the players before they arrive at the stadium?.

Do they leave a nearby hotel.at a certain time where I could catch them for a photo?

    Thanks

If Hungary win by 2 plus tonight it's going make a win a must.(which is extremely unlikely)

If honest I think we will be lose both games. 1 or 2 nil tonight and possibly by couple more on Sunday.

I think we won't have anything play for Sunday. 3 campaigns in a row of disappointment now and failure.

I firmly believe, and hey what do I know, but the best way to approach tonight's game is to go bald headed for the win right from the off. Forget about other games or permutations because putting it simply we play best when we go full on for the win. As the grear Con Houlihan once said we should start the game as if we wre 1 down with 10 minutes to go! C'mon Ireland.

are people going to be mildly surprised or completely lose their sh*t when Idah probably starts over Parrott tonight?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,203 ✭✭✭realdanbreen

It's the managers call in fairness they are the ones that are well paid to make these choices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,178 ✭✭✭✭Kermit.de.frog

Not really, because to react like that you have to have certain expectations of the squad in the first place which most of us don't have. Nobody expects anything but defeat. We hope for better but that's different.

No one is going to be overly upset with a defeat if that's the result.

I don't think ever seen such defeat before ball is kicked. Cant blame anybody for that

Much will depend on Armenia game.

Don't see anything but 2 defeats coming up. This team really is so mentally weak and along with fact players are not in form and are just limited, a win tonight would be greatest upset we have produced in our history.

We never really win when we need to and that will happen again later. Be nice just nick 0-0 if we could. Kelleher will be busy.

If Hungary win by 2 or more campaign is over. No way we beating Hungary by 2 goals away.

Bring in Idah. Three of the four goals Portugal conceded v Hungary were headers, one was from a corner and the other two were from hopeful crosses into the box. The 90th min equaliser in Lisbon was schoolboy league defending by Portugal. They can be got at but as always our lack of concentration will be our downfall.
Hungary should win which will make tonight’s match interesting, it will be a knock-out match rather than a group match if you know what I mean. It would be good to see us having a real go at them but having said that we don’t have the quality to beat them.

Parrot is on form at the moment and looked good when he came on the last day. For a team with a lot of average players, not playing those in form is criminal.

Parrott has 10 goals in 19 games between the Eredivisie and the Europa league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,779 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

I think for work rate alone Parrott has to start. Idah ain't great at the old running around and pressing.

the game is more complicated than just goals in games ratios. Parrott scores in matches AZ dominate and they play a patient dominant passing game (unlike Ireland who’s style of play is of no comparison to AZ) but there’s no proof Parrott can do anything against good teams with real quality centre backs.

he offers no threat of pace or runs in behind that Idah (an inferior touch player to Parrott ) does. In a game that will offer scraps to the front man you’re probably better off with Idah at the start.

Parrott might start but I’d see it as more likely Idah does.

I always just find Idah to be so hugely underhwelming at all the stuff he's supposed to be good at… he's big and potentially pacy, but I usually find him too weak on the ball and reluctant to use his pace most of the time. As you mentioned with Parrott, most of the good stuff Idah has done was in games Celtic were dominating (and Parrott was also good in plenty of games his team's had less possession in, both with Alkmaar, and of course Excelsior Rotterdam).

Idah's a properly good poacher alright, good instincts in the box, especially following up on other shots or errors. If he has to do a loan frontman back-to-goal role for us he'll run around a bit, huff and puff without achieving much, nothing will stick, and not much will come of it - as always happens when he starts for us, and usually happened with Celtic when he was trusted against better teams in Europe. He's a player I really want to develop, but he just hasn't. Having a pretty rotten season too, only 3 league starts for Swansea.

Right now, in just about every skill and metric, i'd have Parrott ahead of him. Think both would probably benefit from a partnership with the pair of 'em, but that's probably unlikely.

You know in his last 5 games, Troy has scored 2 goals in one game and blanked in the other 4 and missed 2 penalties in those 5?

the narrative hes scoring freely …very debateable

Idah is stronger at chasing lost causes, Parrott a better footballer but football won’t come into it much tonight

I could be way wrong anyway how Heimar sees it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,145 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I'm not sure we really need to be talking down the few bright sparks in the team. Since his injury he's played 5 league games, one short appearance right after the injury, and then 4 starts. In his 4 starts he's scored 3, across 2 games against Ajax and Utreacht. He'd a cameo in Europe in a win over Bratislava, and an unsurprising non-scoring start against Crystal Palace, which I wouldn't criticise him too much voer. We're not exactly blessed with superstars over here, and he's clearly, demonstrably, the best we've got on offer.

As for Idah chasing lost causes, to be honest that's one of the things i find him most frustrating with, always looks to run just enough to look like he's doing something, without ever having a hope in hell of actually doing anything. He's the ultimate flatters to deceive player for me. I do think he has merit off the bench if we end up pushing for something late on though, he actually is a decent poacher if a chance falls for him. Every single other aspect of his game is below par though.

yeah maybe, I mean whenever Parrott is brought up there’s people falling over himself to say he’s bang in form. It’s more complicated than that.

There is a tendency to talk about Idah like he’s basically useless while Parrott is far far superior. Football is more complicated than that when you’re talking about players who are fairly even in the level they’ve played at in their career so far.

There’s a tendency to look at goals in games ratios but really its far more important to look at skill sets suiting certain situations.

For what it’s worth i watched Idah play vs Preston for Swansea a week back and he impressed me how he stretched the Preston defense and took on defenders and laid the ball off. He fcuked up at times as well.

But the average Irish fan only sees the result, if that, and he played 90 and didn’t score.

The pubs out around Irishtown are starting to fill already.

Starting early as you need to be well oiled up when watching this Irish team.

That 5 o clock kick off is really gonna inform the mood heading into the stadium. Either very dour, or absolutely jubilant.

Castleknock Hotel. I saw HH walking away from the hotel about 30 mins ago, thought he’d be pushing it for time! Not sure what time they leave the hotel to get to the ground
