Issue with Tradesperson, what to do next?

Long story short, contacted a tradesperson to get a quotation for some work in the house. Agreed a price and date to start the work. Tradesperson requested a deposit to secure the work slot (several hundred Euro) - this was paid via Revlout to the number he provided. Got a text from them confirming receipt of the deposit payment and then……..nothing!

The agreed start date for the work came and went, no reply to phone calls or text messages. Sent one final text requesting return of the deposit and then decided to look in to what my options are to get my deposit back. I've disputed the payment with Revlout and there's the option of the small claims court (the person is still trading as can be seen from their social media pages etc).

Any advice from people who have gone through similar experiences with businesses or trades? Thanks

Ask them on their social media pages! ...if they don't respond to you then , tell them you are starting a claim via SCC if the money is not returned within 48 hours.

Write a Google review containing the full story. Works every time.

Not going to mention them on here…..not really relevant to the thread either.

You didn't mention the type of work but if it's covered by any sort of licence ie. security you could threaten to lodge a complaint with the licencing body.

Too late for you but it is always advisable to use a credit card for deposits. Refunds are easier to organise.

Posting on Facebook with the relevant detail is an excellent suggestion.

Forget Facebook. One click and your post can be deleted and you can be banned by the page.

Forget revolut. You made the payment. They did nothing wrong and they cannot request funds back (nor can any bank)

Gardai might be a possibility as it could be construed as fraud. Ideally make the complaint in his local station.

SCC - takes ages and he most likely will ignore.

Trustpilot might be an option. You can effectively create the 1st review even if they are not registered and it does get noticed. The person would need to have a website though

most trades wont take credit card because of the high risk of fraud from customers steeling back the money later

whats the time frame from date agreed to now. if its a few days then hang tough a bit but if it weeks then act

    Total rubbish.

If someone did that and was successful, it would be fraud and they could face criminal charges.

Chargebacks are not as easy as some make them out to be. Making a false claim is fraud

The only reason cards are not acceptable is because they do give protection against rogue tradesmen and if the job is not done or if they go bust, the customer has protection.

of course it offers protection to the customer but it definetly opens the tradesman to another way for someone to steel from them. whether you like it or not or even beleive it but it does happen. i have read several accounts of it on trades groups on facebook. usually customers canceling last minute and expecting the deposit back or dreaming up problems after paying to get money back .

Cancelling and expecting a deposit back is not a valid reason for chargeback. Though I do advise anyone who takes deposits to make it clear that it is non-refundable just in case they think otherwise.

Dreaming up issues after work is completed - again, very difficult to get a chargeback on this too as you would ask for a professional report.

Don't believe everything people say on social media - you'll find that most of it is made up and created to scare people.
