    The Govt doesn't build houses.

Nobody thinks that the level of house completions is enough, though there are varying arguments as to the reason for it. I have yet to see a single compelling argument from anyone in opposition as to how they would increase the level though.

There are many other ways to increase supply

Ban Air B and B like some city's/countries.

If they won't do that, regulate the thing but when we see Govt TDs renting out properties on Air B and B without the proper permission it's clear they have no interest in that

Vacant properties are a scandal too. In my large estate alone (about 1000 houses) on the top of my head i can count at least 20 properties which are boarded up for years

The only thing I can think of is FF/FG are incapable of solving the housing crisis or they don't want too

They have brought in restrictions for AirBnBs and brought in a tax for vacant and derelict properties. Unfortunately they left the enforcement up to the local councils and local councils are mostly useless. DCC seem to be starting to tackle illegal short term lets at long last but it is way too late. The government really should have beefed an existing department/agency and given them some fecking teeth. The fines/taxes are way too low as well. Vacant property tax is practically fúck all. Enforcement of laws has always been a problem here in Ireland and this government don't really seem to be doing much to fix that. You can have all the laws in the world but if there is no enforcement it doesn't really matter.

AirBnB is regulated to some degree - there are limits to the number of nights etc. Though I agree it could be stricter (and enforcement is questionable).

Vacant properties are simply not a large issue, much less a "scandal". The occupancy rate is very high and while you could put taxes on vacant properties, it is actually very hard to prove a residential property is vacant.

Your ideas are completely pissing about the edges - would they help - potentially a bit - but they will do nothing to transform the problem. The scale of the issue is so much larger and can't be solved today beyond inventing a time machine. People will argue about the roots of it, but a lot of it is simply local authorities (and all parties bear blame there) making it far too difficult to build. I'll believe a single party is serious about solving the housing crisis when they whip their councillors to never again use the phrase "out of scale for the local area" when objecting to planning permission.

Most meant most people that did vote FFG would still have voted for them, even if they thought FFG had lied about housing completions, as per the stats the other poster provided.

I didnt say or mean the majority of the electorate voted FFG.

FG increased their vote in absolute numbers in the last election.

    458k FPV in 2024 V 455k in 2020.

SFs FPV dropped like a stone.

    418k FPV in 2024 V 535k in 2020.

Its very clear which party is headed downwards.

People still crying about the last election and how Sinn Fein and the opposition managed to lose it.

Time for the opposition to face the reality - the electorate didn't think they could improve things.

If the opposition want to get into power next time, they should stop whinging and whining and set out some real actual workable proposals to improve people's lives. They also need to be careful on housing. We are seeing record numbers of first-time buyers as people are getting on the property ladder. Some work might be needed to see exactly who is on the homeless list and how they have got there.

This years housing output will probably be the highest in 17 years.

We are at the top of the european table in terms of new homes being built.

The numbers could be better, but they could be A LOT worse.

    All factual statements.

Which party do you think would deliver more homes and how would their housing policy enable this?

The party that has the gumption to bite the bullet and setup a state building company, building on state land, run as not for profit.

Could start with using the hundreds of millions we are pissing away to developers who's number 1 mission is to make as much money as possible

Houses sold will make money, houses used for social housing etc will be state assets

I'm sure our "prudent" finance minister could figure it out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,195 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

Someone said that we need 50,000 houses a year, at half a million a pop, that is €25 bn a year? I am sure that our Finance Minister has that small change around somewhere.

Houses are selling for 500k, which is massively over inflated. It doesn’t cost that to build the house. You can deliver 2 & 3 bedroom houses for far cheaper.

A state building company could also greatly help address the apprenticeship issue. As someone who is employed in the construction sector, it’s a no brainier to me.

No matter what facts or figures you give

FF and FG are doing the best they can on housing and anyone who disagrees is just wrong

Who holds the record for most confidence motions against them? Harris is on 3.

Yet another housing plan to fix the housing disaster. It seems to me that the numbers promised are exactly the same as the last housing plan which failed miserably with FFG resorting to lying about the numbers. The last housing plan said we would be building 60,000 houses by now to reach some to-be-missed target in 2030. It's a joke. All spin, no substance.

Housing plan seeks to deliver 300,000 homes over 5 years

A delayed Housing "Plan" with no annual targets. Wow. It's like we are going backwards. No new ideas, just spin.

So the new plan is to prioritize families who are “homeless” living in hotels etc and give them a shiny new house before everyone else.

Great initiative to just declare yourself homeless, skip the Q and get your forever home. Good luck to ever stopping the chancers now.

    Brain dead this government is.

We fast forward 10 year's and these houses wont be built.

No party no matter who they are on current polices will fix this anytime soon.

Seamus McGrath seems to be wheeled out most of the time to talk about housing.

Martin and Harris are the 2 men in charge and Browne is the Housing Minister, these are the people who should be on TV answering questions instead of some backbench TD.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,229 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

James Browne was asked why yearly housing targets were removed from the housing "plan". He said housing targets "can become a distraction". Imagine a senior manager saying that in a private sector organisation. It just beggars belief. Basically FFG do not want to be held accountable until the next general election where they will do a giveaway budget and tell loads of housing lies to fool the gullible electorate.

Zero accountability. Zero hope of solving the FFG inspired housing disaster.

The minister of state answering questions about the Housing "Plan" on Week in Politics cannot answer a single question. Absolutely embarrassing. He actually doesn't seem to know anything. Some FG TD from Limerick, never saw him before.

You know when the government don't have any faith or belief in the plan that they send some nobody out to defend it. If the plan was any good you could bet your last euro that the main players in the party would be climbing over each other to get on those shows and tell us how great they are and how great the plan is.

Paschal is gone. As expected really. He always had eyes on the bigger prize. 2 by-elections next Spring. More pressure on Simon.

I'd personally like to see Simon or Michael take the Housing portfolio so that someone with clout actually takes the housing disaster seriously. The Housing "Plan" is already discredited.

Housing is now like Health, a poisoned chalice. They are just kicking the can down the road and hoping somewhere along the way that it gets solved.

Helen or Simon should go to Finance. There’s nothing Si can’t do and Helen did great work on Brexit
