I think Harry Byrne may challenge Sam for Leinster starting short.

Also worth noting, Tom Stewart started in the back row for the last URC game against the Lions. I initially believed this was maybe a needs must decision.

He ended up in the back row against Spain at no. 7? (Top down decision?)

He started and played the entire game at 7 against the Lions.

Calling Crowley's try 'a run in from 5 metres'? Is this just on a casual glance at the game? Crowley manufactured that try and was involved from the start and tracked across the field to finish it.

It absolutely was not a 5 metre run in.

And the Porter try also had huge input from Crowley with long accurate passing Cutting out defenders in multiple involvements prior to the try (the kind of long accurate passing that Sam Prendergast is known for)

    Casey was not 'poor'

His passing is more accurate than Gibson Park's, JGP made multiple poor passes last week. His Kicking was good, but his passing was ropey.

Caseywas under pressure because the pack as a whole played very poorly in the first half and we were dropping the ball and losing collisions (like this one where Baird gets bounced)

    image.png

In the first half it was so frustrating. Jack and Craig were playing well, creating multiple chances and over and over again, handling errors or getting beaten in the air ended up in turnovers.

Jack played to 51 mins, then Sam came on, at that point, Japan were a spent force, their bench quality was a big step down from their starting 15 and they couldn't continue the intensity they showed for the first half.

Ireland's lineout was a complete mess. I think Beirne was calling it, but it misfired on every level, with the team simply not knowing the calls, or not being able to execute them correctly.

Kelleher got pinged for a double movement on the throw at one point, but that was because he got spooked by the fact that nobody was carrying out the movements he thought he was throwing into.

We improved in the 2nd half when Japan stopped competing, and we threw directly to the front in shortened lineouts.

Against better teams, this won't work.

Ireland made Japan look good on Saturday. But Japan are not a competitive team. That is worrying.

It is not the halfbacks that made them look good. We looked poor in the back 3, not winning the contestable high balls, not being able to complete linebreaks, fumbling passes, and losing footing when there were only one or two defenders to beat.

Australia are in a sorry state having lost to Italy this week, so I expect is to beat them next week, but SA will murder us

    Ban billionaires

The issue is any criticism of Goodman has an * over it due to the utter failure of the set piece/ruck work.

For me the first person that needs to go is POC for the above failure, if after that we are having the same conversation in regards to attack then Goodman should follow.

good post, but some posters see what they want to see.

I think Harry is going to supplant sam at leinster this season anyway.

COuld be a good shootout between Jack and Harry.

Disagree re Casey. Thought first half he was poor, decision making wasn't good.

I'm well aware Crowley did a huge amount in the build up to his try. I'm not doubting that. I responded to a post saying he scored a try and kicked the majority of his points, what else is a 10 meant to do. I thought Crowley played well this week, have no real issues with how he did vs Japan and still think the jersey is his going into Australia.

Think pretty much the whole forum can agree on the lineout issues and general back play are the glaring issues for Ireland.

I know Harry has played well for Leinster in the last few games but over the last few years he's been behind every other out-half at Leinster. At 26 years of age it would be hard to beleive thats he's suddenly improved enough to overtake prendergast. Anyway Gabriel is waiting in the wings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 460 ✭✭Bart97

It’s the first time in his career he’s shown any consistency. 26 is still young

Well a lot of that had to do with injury - he really struggled to put together consistent injury free runs.

I think the chances of him overtaking Prendergast are pretty much zero though.

All Blacks XV v England A

    Ireland XV v Spain

Feel we’re on the wrong side of development fixtures here. Spain worthwhile of course and helpful for the game but need to be tested at the top like for like level wasted opportunity given All Blacks are in town. 1 game just insufficient for its purpose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,983 ✭✭✭RichieRich_89

It would have been good if games against all three had been arranged in this window.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,429 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

maybe New Zealand didnt want another top level game like All Blacks XVs other game after BaBas and England is Uruguay in France

Shame we cant try get A games in 6 Nations brought back but other unions just dont have money for A teams for a full tournament

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,873 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Not sure about the short term I think Brian Gleeson could force the issue if he develops to his apparent potential. Coming into the 2028 6 nations, Gleeson will be 24 and Doris ~30, at that stage it could make a lot of sense to have Gleeson take over carrying from the base of the scrum and goal line drop outs to allow Doris to focus on the other areas of his game.

I'd probably keep Doris at 8 through this world cup cycle, subject to injuries and form.

Ireland weren't supposed to play this fixture.

We stepped in to provide a team when Tonga (who were originally the Spanish opponent) had to withdraw due to costs.

We didn't have any A games organised for the November series as a lot of these players had already put in minutes during the summer tour.

Hansen and Murray added to the squad.

    Osborne obviously out.

The Archangel has a long way to go yet. I know you know that, Im just sayin! Missing out on U20s mightnt help either.

Physically and athletically he's quite similar to Byrne but we have no idea how robust he'll be.

    Byrne: 6ft2", 90kg approx. Age 26. U20 3 caps. 4 Irish Caps. Age 26

    Gabriel: 6ft2-3", 90kg approx. Age 20. U20 0 caps. Age 20

    Prendergast: 6ft4", 90kg approx. Age 22. U20 14 caps. Irish Caps 11.

Personally I see them as an inch or so tall for Outhalf. Basically a bigger target and a centre of gravity thats not 'ideal'. Crowley more the prototypical than Sexton.

The one thing that would set Gabriel apart from all the rest is his left foot.

*IF* he ever makes the breakthrough and *IF* he ever makes it to the Test team he would be the first left footed outhalf since Alan McGowan (1 cap). And *IF* he ever manages to get a second cap, the first since Jackie Kyle.

Former Irish outhalf Barry McGann has passed away.

    https://www.irishrugby.ie/2025/11/10/barry-mcgann-rest-in-peace/#:~:text=The%20IRFU%20would%20like%20to,Ireland%20between%201969%20and%201976.

In 1976 he had to withdraw from the Munster squad that was set to play Australia in Musgrave park. Tony Ward made his debut in his place.

He then had to withdraw from the Irish team to play Australia the following week. Ollie Campbell made his debut in his place.

Im sure he will be commemorated fondly at the game on Saturday.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/rugby/2025/11/10/tributes-paid-to-former-irish-outhalf-barry-mcgann-who-died-at-the-weekend-aged-77/#:~:text=Cork%2Dborn%20McGann%2C%20who%20was,from%20international%20rugby%20in%201976.

McGann had transferred from Cork Con to Lansdowne in 1969, and it was while playing with Lansdowne that he was named as a replacement on the Irish squad to play France only for outhalf Mike Gibson to withdraw with injury and McGann won his first cap.

He made an outstanding debut and helped Ireland to a 17-9 victory and was so impressive when the superb Gibson returned to fitness, McGann retained the No 10 jersey and the Ulster man moved to the centre where he became one of the finest centres in the history of the game.

McGann won four Irish caps while with Lansdowne but he returned to Cork and Cork Con. He was with Cork Con in 1973 when he lined up alongside his clubmate Tom Kiernan as captain when Ireland took on the All Blacks on a blustery day in Lansdowne Road.

Ireland also included Gibson, Willie John McBride, Ray McLoughlin, Fergus Slattery and McGann’s fellow Corkman Terry Moore that day and when Tom Grace scored a late try to level the game at 10-10, the celebratory crowd spilled on to the pitch to engulf the winger with congratulations.

When the crowd finally cleared, McGann was left with a difficult kick from the touchline in blustery conditions and although it appeared to be on target and sailing between the posts, a gust of wind appeared to catch it and the kick tailed wide at the last moment and the game ended in a draw.

Glad to see Darragh Murray called up, and good to have Mack back in camp.

I'm intrigued as to whether we take the gamble at just start Mack at 15. Jimmy O'Brien is one of those fairly solid players, who just kind of lacks x-factor it feels like.

There are rumours that Josh VDF has a tight hamstring too, so might be a chance to see someone different in the 7 shirt - Timoney again, or maybe Doris or Cian Prendergast.

I've said it before - but I feel the breakdown is an area where the Aussies always get good change out of us.

Just had a look and it was November 2013 when we lost more than 1 game in the Autumn Internationals. Most of the years we won them all. An amazing record really.

The squad update said Van der Flier and Ringrose both have strained hamstrings, both a doubt for this weekend.
Mack is back in camp but not sure he's available for this weekend, it just says he is making positive strides in his rehab of a foot injury.
Osborne out for remainder of Internationals.
McCloskey is back training this week.
    Darragh Murray in camp also.
Would expect nothing short of a selection as strong as we have available for Australia.
    Something like,
    Porter, Sheehan, Furlong,
    Beirne, Ryan,
    Baird, Doris, Timoney*
    Gibson-Park, Crowley,
    Lowe, McCloskey, Farrell**, T O'Brien***
    J O'Brien.

Kelleher, McCarthy, Bealham, Henderson, C Prendergast, Casey, S Prendergast, Aki/Henshaw/Stockdale.

    * if Van der Flier ruled out.
    ** if Ringrose ruled out
*** Assuming Hansen won't be available this weekend.

Plenty of international out-halves over 6ft, between 6ft and 6ft1 is average for modern day out-halves, not many over 6ft2. Prendergast at 6ft4 is not normal, people have mentioned his body shape not being right. Won't know how sturdy Gabriel is until he steps up from AIL where he does put himself out a fair bit.

Find it hard to believe that only 1 player from the A team was called up. Any one of the back players wouldn't be out of place, especially given the general stodginess of late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,000 ✭✭✭almostover

Fraser McReight did a number on our ruck ball in this fixture last year. He was the one bright light from Aus v Italy last week for them too with 3 turnovers. He needs to be well marshalled for this game. Whoever plays 7 should almost be made man mark him at ruck time to keep our ball secure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,804 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

I think you have to accept a certain number of turnovers from him, nobody nullifies him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61 ✭✭shimmieandshake

Our attack hasn't been good, so I understand the pile on.

Just a reminder: Goodman is in charge of attacking set plays, and Andy Farrell is in charge of our general attacking play.

Goodman's getting a lot of stick for problems that aren't his remit.

Good to have Hansen back but was he not supposed to be out for the duration? I do want to see him at FB some time, just maybe not against South Africa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭Luckycharm

Harry is only 8 months older than Crowley. He has always been a bit soft and injury prone. I think that stint in the Prem toughened him up, 3 MOMs in a row, he deserves a start with Leinsters first team. Will see how he goes from there, if he cuts out the silly errors, he is kind of a hybrid of both Sam/Crowley. Better kicker than crowley, better defender and taking it to the line than Sam.

it's so funny. Hansen was so poor at fullback for Connacht while being a fantastic winger and yet folks call for Hansen to be fullback for Ireland. It boggles the brain

Fair point, maybe you lose more by sacrificing one of our own guys to go after him.

Either way there should be some element of a plan to try to limit his influence. It's a bang average Aus team and he has the ability to ruin the breakdown for us.

Edit: It hasn't worked well for us so far but playing a kicking dominated plan would help nullify his influence. Trying to take it through many phases and rucks only invites him on for turnovers.
