So what do they actually call out for? I told the girl on the phone all the details and she said because it was an internal issue there would be a call out charge so I presumed that meant they would make safe whatever the issue was

    can’t recommend anyone unfortunately

Esbn aren’t permitted to work on your distribution board

They’d be doing the right thing by removing your main fuse and sealing it

Then you’d be required to get a rec out to fix your issues and certify for reconnection

You may struggle to get a Cert . The board will have to be replaced at a minimum and whole house tested with any remediation work including earthing upgraded

What area are you in? Sound's like he might not have tightened the mains cable into the breaker properly as you said the main incoming breaker was replaced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 122 ✭✭ShadowSA

Type in your area and make a few calls. Or call back the electrician, could just need to re tighten the cable, make sure it is inserted properly.

this was posted previously. This cable had strands removed so it would fit into the terminal. The whole board needs replacing as was pointed out earlier in the thread

esbn also charges for call-outs if it’s not their issue

Thanks for all the comments, ESB are happy to leave the house connected but switched off. There is an electrician on the way in the next few minutes I got off the safe electric website who is going to fix the dodgy rcbo to get the power back on this evening. I'll get him back tomorrow hopefully to take a proper look at everything and do whatever needs doing. I'll be paying for it all out of the bathroom money. I'm not prepared to be messed around any longer by the original contractor. Not a great pic unfortunately

Your issue is with whoever installed the car charger. No surprise you weren't issued with a cert for that as it's incredibly dangerous to trim the cable to fit.

As above esbns responsibility stops at the meter, you'll do well not to have them cut off the supply entirely until it's sorted.

Edit I was going to add they're normally sound and turns out to be the case!

We did get a cert for the car charger and have had zero issues with it since installation 12 months ago. The shower guy was here Tuesday messing about with the fuse board so I think he must have knocked off the cable and loosened it by accident? I do agree with all your comments about trimming that cable though so I will raise that with them. Rcbo is out so we have power back on and he's coming back in a few days to replace it

    1000013224.jpg

Thats the trimmed end of the cable

Sorry just to confirm is that the shower rcbo or the charger? Was the shower neutral trimmed as well, and was the shower in use when the car charger was plugged in?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,897 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

That's the charger rcbo. The shower neutral was the cable that was connected via the bus bar extension type thing! This yoke

    1000013239.jpg

No the shower was not being used. It has become nearly unusable this week with the amount of tripping it was causing. When the electrician this evening was checking all the connections he was gently pulling on each cable and one of the blue cables literally fell out of the shower rcbo it was that loose so that was probably causing the tripping with the shower.

Did your current rec not have anything to say about how dangerously your car charger was wired?

any rec working on a distribution board has to check it out completely. It’s obvious from your original photos that there was no issues/damage to the existing car charger rcbo. As you say, ongoing works may have caused some connections to be loosened whilst fishing cables into the distribution board. The onus is on the rec to make sure that these are tight. (See link below)

I’m surprised that the emergency electrician didn’t issue you a notice of potential hazard on the existing distribution board (but if he’s coming back to replace it then he may not)

As far as I can see the neutral that was trimmed to fit was connected to the car charger. I know it shouldn't have been done that way but could that have caused the rcbo to melt? I'm just totally confused now as to who to blame or hold responsible for this latest mess

connections look good in your original photos. It’s possible when adding the new rcbo for your lighting circuit that this neutral was disturbed to get a feed. It is impossible to be sure though. However all connections must be checked when the cover is removed from your distribution board.
there have been too many electricians at this board now unfortunately.

    IMG_4726.png

this isn’t a great connection either but it looks like the loop feeding your new light rcbo

Yeah the electrician that was here a few days ago left the cover off the board just barely attatched and was actually partially covering the new rcbo he fitted preventing it from tripping. I've emailed fokearn with the details and see what they make of it. I've told the bathroom company they are not to send anyone back to our house again as they have sent 4 guys now who seem to be just as incompetent as each other. I've also asked for all their relevant details to forward on to safe electric for investigation.

from day one on this post , you need a board Change and whole house test , This should of been done before any electrical works , many a corner has been cut unfortunately,

yeah. No one taking responsibility. How many electricians were at this board and just adding without concern.

    Car charger company

    Builder doing extractor fan

    4 electricians from bathroom company!!!!!!!!!!

emergency electrician(just including him here as safe electric won’t pursue as it’ll be difficult to accertain who did what)

    Lifestyle meter installer

as you rightly pointed out ,these issues should have been highlighted before additional circuits were added

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,897 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

Yep I totally agree. The very first electrician should have told us not to add anything more to the board and all the others who have since worked on it should have either refused or insisted on a board upgrade first but unfortunately once we had the bathroom installed we were stuck with this situation as I don't have the money to upgrade the board until early next year. On a more positive note I spoke to fokearn today and they were straight out to replace the rcbo regardless of who or what caused it. They also said they would reimburse me for the cost of the emergency electrician we got out last night and would send us a one 4 all voucher for all the hassle so good to see some companies still value customer service. I haven't heard anything back from the bathroom crowd but I'm not surprised by that.

hold back 3k from the bathroom company,

That will replace a board test whole house and sort some issues,

Get that job done as soon as you can , next time you might not be as lucky,

House burnt down and no insurance to cover it due to improper electrical work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,897 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

ive actually been thinking about something like that, I'm sure the bathroom guy won't be very happy but it's his electricians who have put us in this situation . I honestly feel paranoid using the shower now especially with it tripping all the time and now with this latest fiasco I'm worried about what could happen in the future. It makes complete sense to just replace that board and all the crappy wiring that's been done by a competent rec and get everything tested and certified.

I wouldn’t do that just yet. Report it again to safe electric and fill in the bathroom companies details.
if you get any electrical work done (other than immediate repairs for safety) then that’ll let them off the hook. The cru should really get involved in this one.

Perhaps, or they were going out of their way to ensure the OP didn't pursue it further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,682 ✭✭✭✭con747

The OP can still do that if they are that way inclined, I would rather think it was a gesture of goodwill rather than a bribe.

Yep it really helped cheer us up on what's been a dreadful few days. I can't get the smell of burning out of my memory and the utter panic running around the house and up into the attic trying to find the source of it. The more I think back on it and the wife and kid standing out in the garden terrified makes me determined to get this whole electricity situation sorted completely. I think I'm going to get the ball rolling in what JL spark suggested and use the bathroom guys money for whatever needs doing to get the house safe. His attitude and customer service has just gone completely downhill since I raised my first concern about the cert and hasn't even contacted me today after I emailed him with what happened last night. I will struggle to get a new electrician to come in and just redo the wiring for the shower as they possibly won't want to work on the existing board but hopefully if they are also doing a complete board upgrade it should be no problem to get it all done
