This came out of absolutely nowhere and was first reported by Cork Beo which linked to

    https://tivoliinfrastructure.ie/

It entails a grade seperation and a substantial improvement in capacity at the Glanmire roundabout (or Dunkettle roundabout as it is properly known… different from the Dunkettle interchange). This is partly to provide eastern access for the Tivoli area as part of the port relocation to happen now that the M28 works have started. Tivoli port cannot be moved until the M28 is done. There is a cycle bridge included but the routing towards Cork/Tivoli is spectacularly bad and arguably worse than the current roundabout, which was already terrible for cyclists.

It also involves tinkering and a token upgrade to the Silversprings junction as well as new access to the Tivoli area and some grade separated cycle lanes.

God knows when this will happen but I can't see that must resistance to it. They say that it is being designed with traffic levels from the Cork Northern Distributor Road in mind, and have put in a submission to improve the 1km between this interchange and the start of the CNDR up in Glanmire. (Remember this is nothing to do with the N40 Cork North Ring, which is completely different). The new flyover will really help traffic outbound in the evening but will lead to an almighty bottleneck at Silversprings inbound in the morning. That will be truly epic, that will.

The website has so many spelling mistakes it is silly, but -

The plans and designs provide for a new interchange at the Eastern end of the site, an improved interchange at Silversprings, a commuter rail station with Irish Rail, and a new cycleway with Cork City Council, enabling the linking of the City centre with Little Island

Specifically, the plans and designs include the following:-

    • A new Tivoli Eastern Access Flyover the N8 dual carriageway and the Cork to Cobh/Midleton railway line, which will replace the existing Glanmire Roundabout thus removing the need for the roundabout and enabling freeflow to and the Dunkettle interchange. The new junction will manage traffic, cyclist and pedestrian flow between Tivoli Docks, the N8 and the R639 Glanmire Road.  The new junction includes bus priority measures and it will provide vehicular access to the eastern side of Tivoli Docks in order to facilitate the regeneration of the area.
    • An Upgrade of Tivoli West Overpass  to provide a new access, new bus priority measures and active travel routes into Tivoli Docks. This will include the provision of new traffic signals and lane configurations at the Silversprings northern junction.
    • A new commuter rail station to be constructed at Tivoli Docks as part of the Cork Area Commuter Rail programme, in line with the Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS). This new commuter station will be part of an enhanced rail network connecting the city with both Midleton and Cobh. This will be complemented by an additional new station further north along the route at Dunkettle, which will be a designated park and ride station. Once the full set of planned rail upgrades is completed, train services between the city and Glounthaune could run as frequently as every five minutes.
    • A new cycleway enabling commuters by bike and the general public  to connect with the City Centre and Little Island to be designed and planned by Cork City Council

As referenced in the Dunkettle Interchange thread here's a link to an upcoming public information event:

This is the roundabout directly to the west of Dunkettle?

If it is obviously it would be welcome as it's stupid to have a "freeflow" interchange lead directly to a roundabout on one approach as that negates the benefits in that direction. That should really have been dealt with in the Dunkettle scheme.

Best to do things properly the first time.

They really do need to come up with something better than funnelling cyclists around a slalom to a signalised crossing, but I have to say this is pretty exciting. It'll of course be crippled with traffic when Tivoli is filled in with apartments so if it goes to public consultation I hope they'll optimise the active travel bits, for everyone's sakes.

The usual suspects are kicking off already

Their complaints are not about the substance of the plan, but about Port of Cork Company going on a solo run, and the councillors are 100% correct to complain about it. This will create a new interchange on key route into the city, and the Port seems to have not consulted with the city council, TII (the works open onto N8, so TII has to have a say) or Iarnród Éireann (who are planning a station at Tivoli) before lobbing in the planning application.

If PoCC just wanted the application to be kicked out straight away, I can’t think of a better way to go about it.

They say they are engaged with stakeholders including TII, the NTA and the City Council

These plans and designs are being brought forward by PoCC in consultation with key stakeholders such as the Department of Transport, Cork City Council, Irish Rail, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the National Transport Agency (NTA), the Land Development Agency (LDA) and Cork City Council Transportation/Roads team. There has also been consultation with local residents and with existing companies at Tivoli Docks.

I see the main complainant is from the Green Party. Enough said.
