Totally influenced by the injury. You see one of those in almost every game and its a yellow.

That red card could be the game changer PSG need.

They've been very much second best so far. Harsh red to be fair, Diaz is a bit unlucky

It's ruining the game it really is. This re-reffing of everything is getting out of hand.

And just tell the ref the decision, wasting even more time coming over to a monitor

2mins added on at half time is a farce, you had 1min for fouls and Courtois' goal kicks at least and the VAR check had to be at least 2mins on its own

It was an absolute shocker of a tackle, complete scissor tackle from behind, nowhere near ball, with high level of danger of injury to other player

The only time I've properly watched Madrid as of late is tonight against Pool and both quarter finals against Arsenal last season, and they've been equally shít in all three games.

Liverpool take the lead through MacAllister - thoroughly deserved.

    Deserved lead alright

Very hard to figure them out. On paper they have absolute quality everywhere. But they realistically should be 2, if not 3 down here.

Absolute screamer from VDV!!! What a run!

VAR did their level best to find an offside but to no avail.

Their midfield is fairly ordinary, even more so when Valverde is moved to FB.

Kroos was the guy who made them tick and he was never replaced. Modrìc also gone too.

The speed of him, and then the finish at the end of it!

That’s a contender for goal of the season. Incredible goal.

Liverpool looking legging here. They'll need to make changes and substitutes have not been their strong point as of late!

It was a stupid tackle with no chance of getting the ball but after that it was a dime a dozen tackle with zero impact. 'Shocker of a tackle' is a ridiculous exaggeration.

A great last 15 in Paris is on the cards.

Great win for spurs one point behind Liverpool in the CL table.

A convincing 1-0 win for Liverpool. They should have scored 4 or 5 but for a MOTM performance by Courtois.

Vini Jnr will be having nightmares about Bradley who really stood upto him and played him perfectly, a great performance and easily his best game in a red jersey.

Real had 2 shots on target late in the first half and that was that.

A strangely convincing win v Real Madird (only their second this season) but it was very well earned.

    Big performance from Liverpool.

Vini Jnr is a very unlikeable player. He has all the arrogance & theatrics but didn't back it up tonight. Can't see him staying at Real Madrid for much longer if the rumours about his attitude are to be believed.

Going off the ground like that in that position, yeah its a shocker. Not dime a dozen, which would be sliding in from the side to take him down with far less risk of injury.

One can only hope Hakimi isn't out long term, ligaments must be screwed from it

no, it can’t just look at a free for the sole reason of checking VAR but if it’s part of a check like that one where a penalty was in play it can overturn the award of the free.

If you think that is bad VAR when it overturned an incorrect free award, I think you’re just blind to the benefits of VAR if you have problems with that

The corner thing, not sure that happened? If the ref had blown his whistle by the time the corner incident happened then it’s not in play anymore. Once the ref blows his whistle. Nothing that happens after that matters. That’s the same with or without VAR.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,609 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I was asking a question I don't know when the whistle blew and didn't see the handball happening in real time so had no idea what he was even trying to give

It's confusing and it delayed the game

It looks like he gave a free kick and then 2mins later gave a drop ball instead

I don't see any benefit to a process that does that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

the benefit is that it overturns an incorrect decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,609 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Free kicks get awarded wrongly all the time. We don't need VAR intervening on each one now.

Especially when nobody knows what's going on or what the delay is.

As a spectacle it's worse now and this is a slippery slope.

But, some game other than that. Madrid decided to just try and kick us the whole 2nd half for some reason which was odd, not often you get to rattle them like that

If not for their goalkeeper being world class, yet again, it could have been more

    Amazing night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

I knew the likeliest result from the VAR check was an overturn of the free kick. I just watch a lot of football I guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,609 ✭✭✭✭8-10

it wasn’t clear to me that he had given a free kick! Or why there was a delay or why he went to the monitor. The setting up of a wall was when it seemed like it might be a free kick.

There was an announcement sort of saying “penalty check” so there’s an assumption that he was going over to see if there’s a penalty maybe, and handball was a best guess as it happened really quickly so could have been anything

Going over to see if the free kick should be reversed was absolutely not my first thought but well done on predicting it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Well yeah, there was initial confusion whether it was a free or pen but that’s nothing to do with var. once the ref reached for his spray i knew it was a free not a pen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,609 ✭✭✭✭8-10

The confusion with VAR was firstly the delay before the announcement of a check. The wall was set up and everything, yes it seemed at that point it's a free kick but wasnt clear there was a check going on - everybody just stood around like they didn't know how to prepare for a free kick

But...my original post was at halftime when I was annoyed by it. After that 2nd half I'm struggling to feel anything negative about the game anymore!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,407 ✭✭✭jacool

I watch a lot of football too, and VAR is not meant to re-referee the game.

The referee blew for handball, and even put the spray down to show where he thought the handball had occurred.

VAR showed a message saying "Potential Penalty", which I took as them checking where the handball occurred, which was actually inside the box. VAR did not send the referee over to change his mind, but to confirm where the foul occurred. The referee made a mistake by changing his mind.

VAR can recommend a review for a "clear and obvious error", but they didn't in this case. They just wanted a ruling on where the handball was.

    Looked completely daft to me.

so you think the referee made a mistake in overturning the free? As in he made a mistake in overstepping what he was allowed to do in that instance?
