not sure what elite is in this context but it was in the lounge, this person is platinum and had to pay 40 quid. I’ve been allowed jump on earlier flights in LHR in the past, sometimes declined if the flight is full and I’ve done it at the desk through security and I’ve done it at the lounge reception desk so according to the staff member this person asked, it’s new policy and BA have been doing for a number of months.

just booked flights for Italy next June 2026. I had around 100k points and got 2 x return for 30k plus 65e tax, same flights were around 400 pp so relatively happy with that.

Am.i able to buy a load of avios

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭julyjane

yes you can buy or gift them at varying rates but if you're not in a hurry to buy them there's a sale every few months of a 50% bonus, the most recent one ended on the 2nd of October

While it looks cheaper to buy the most avios it doesn't always work out that way. Last year I wanted to buy 4x reward flights that were 10k each at a peak time. I had only 12k points so I needed 28 but when I looked at booking the 4 flights there were a number of options for points plus money so I sat down and compared each option and the cheapest option was to buy 5k points and book the flights for around 17,000 plus €433 - to buy 28,000 points would have been a few hundred more AFAIR even with the 50% bonus

I’ll have to have a look and keep an eye on the avios 😁 thank you so much

Anyone else find that (especially for UK routes) AL is more expensive than Ryanair therefore deciding to fly Aer Lingus to earn Avios is a bit counter productive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,903 ✭✭✭thebiglad

You can always fly one way ryanair and other with Aer Lingus, sometimes I find this is a way better option for cost.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 7,349 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Agreed and ill do that if it makes sense.

I just don't get how some people rack up lots of Avios from AL flights, in a lot of cases they will have paid for then via the higher airfare.

Most people with large EI Avios balances have them from flying for work where pricing isn't an issue. And/or more rarely if from leisure travel then typically from lots of long haul flights - regular flights back and forth from the US for family reasons for example if on EI planes. Or from getting credited from very long haul travel on BA or Qatar or similar to Asia or anywhere else far away.

I can't imagine how long it'd take to wrack up a useful amount of Avios flying for leisure to and from the UK on only competively priced flights, even at something really regular like once a month. Its not really viable.

I have about 150k avios from work travel. I think I might have used 8k at one stage to book a reward flight just to see if it worked.

I've never been able to find a reliable and easy way to derive value from Avios. The Concierge upgrades and fast track are probably the best benefits I find. Oh and my sister likes the Silver upgrade and free drinks in LHR!

Large baskets of avios also come from estore and things like RevPoints

Booking.com is 6 points per euro. So if you pay with a Revolut Metal Credit card and track your booking thru estore, a e100 hotel earns 700 points.

Qatar, finnair,Iberia and BA all have different availability and routes across multiple carriers including code shares

There’s absolutely NO excuse not to have accounts on all of those and to move your avios between them to secure flights that can work for you in business class for that amount of avios with lounges a 1000 times better than the aer lingus excuses for lounges with all the free food and better lie flat seats to choose from,on demand dining and lounge table service

I’ve been collecting Avios for a while now and have about 60,000 saved up, but I’ve only just started looking into what I can actually use them for! I’m wondering if it’s at all realistic to get flights for 2 adults and 1 child to Miami using Avios? The trip would be about a year away, so I’ve time to keep collecting if I need more. Just trying to get a sense of how far off I am?

The guide is here which explains it but in any case: https://www.aerlingus.com/aerclub/spending-avios/buy-reward-flight/

Firstly check when you want to travel because there are peak and off peak dates: https://www.aerlingus.com/media/pdfs/AC_calendar_2026.pdf

Then check how much Avios you need (Miami is zone 6 and a child will cost the same: https://www.aerlingus.com/media/pdfs/EI_routes_avios_amounts.pdf

Finally the hardest bit is finding availability because you are looking for 3 seats each way. Considering US pax can generate Avios so quickly by converting or getting credit card points it’s really tough to find availability. You can look on: rewards.aerlingus.com

Not to dampen your enthusiasm but 3 seats each way to and Miami during peak season is going to cost you 150k Avios and be very difficult to find availability. Off peak it will still cost 97500 and be tricky to find. Best of luck

Even if you have nowhere near the required number of points, if you look up the flights on the rewards site it will give you a number of options such as 60,000 points plus €xxxx which is usually significantly cheaper than the "pay with avios" option booking flights on the aer lingus website

Thanks for sharing links! We will be flying this time next year. Have a cruise booked to board on 31/10 so off peak. I should have said - my husband & I have 30,000 each right now. I don’t want to piss anyone off here but asking repeated questions so il do research based on what you’ve shared! Thanks

Can 4yo fly business class? I don’t know will anyone thank me 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,741 ✭✭✭Nolimits

Not on Aer Lingus but I've flown business class with dogs (it wasn't me with a dog).

I know your question was tongue in cheek, but just to avoid any doubt, yes 4 year old can fly in business.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,882 ✭✭✭pureza

They can of course but you’ll pay the same price in avios and taxes or cash and taxes as an adult which would be a Complete waste of money or avios

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 365 ✭✭Rmgblue

It’s not part of my plan regardless! Ok, well, I guess il decide what way to finance this once the flights are at least available to book 🤣 thanks to everyone for replying

Looks like they are moving AerClub estore to new updated avios.com.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

It's active now for me with all data (including pending transactions) in there.

Also, it has remembered my other FQTV numbers that I used for transfers of Avios recently, so it's nice that it's now all in one webpage.

Now let's see if the tracking works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

One thing gone however is the linked Credit/Debit cards for in store shopping, those need to be re-added.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,391 ✭✭✭Yggr of Asgard

Avios App however does not yet work, still only BA login but the old eStore app continues to work. (At least on my iPhone).

From checkout to check-in: Aer Lingus and Tesco Ireland launch exclusive Avios partnership turning grocery shopping into timeless travel experiences

    # Global

    • Every €2.50 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers can be converted into

600 Avios, the reward currency of AerClub, and redeemed on flights, upgrades, car hire and more

    • Just €17.50 in Tesco Clubcard vouchers is enough to book an Aer Lingus reward flight to Paris for just 4,000 Avios plus taxes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,042 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Now that's good value, 600 avios if bought or gifted is the equivalent of €18 so you are getting over 7 times the actual value

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,484 ✭✭✭✭L1011

Supervalu rate was 1=1 with occasional triples as far as I can remember, so 1=2.4 at all times isn't as good as SV could be, but is consistently better.

Now back then I was getting SV points on power and on my credit card; and you could get points on alcohol also. Slightly less earning potential these days, and even less with Tesco now I don't have to buy petrol!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,218 ✭✭✭julyjane

That's a great bonus i rarely shop in Tesco but checked my app and there's 2.50 in vouchers there so I'll take the points instead

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,672 ✭✭✭VG31

I saw that advertised in Tesco the other day but couldn't find anything online.

600 Avios for €2.50 is very good value.

Same, no more points on Alcohol or fuel is a kicker in fairness

Home heating oil with certa and electricity with Bord Gais might make sense for some
