We can't drop Lowe. My wife will be horrified.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

penalties to the opposition, as has been the case for a few years sadly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,123 ✭✭✭clsmooth

The momentum changing moment was Osborne not getting through that gap and then Crowley subsequently getting caught when he tried to step the NZ 2nd row and getting turned over. We went from attacking in their 22 to defending in ours and conceding. Before that it looked like we would go on to win it. We gave them a sniff and they took it. That’s the frustrating thing.

Some of your posts are a bit unhinged so can I ask if this is a real comment or not? It's very hard to tell.

    In eight minutes of rugby?

    Are you being serious here?

EDIT: Excuse me, I've made a mistake so please allow me to correct it.

    Six minutes of rugby.

Well, first and foremost, POC has to go…the lineout has been a travesty for years and yet nothing is done about it…that already limits one of key attacking strengths and teams know that.

Poor atmosphere and 2 bad teams. Tadg Beirne was a huge loss. I thought Crowley played well and nailed a brilliant penalty in the first half. The playing of Ireland home games in Chicago should stop now!!

Crowleys only 25. Prendergast 22. Its completely horses for courses considering their ages. Both have some up sides and plenty of issues with their games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,718 ✭✭✭FtD v2

    Incredibly frustrating performance.

The referee/TMO had a monumental impact on that game - from the upgrading of Beirne’s collision to a red to Caleb Clarke not even getting a yellow for a swinging arm to TOB’s head, there were numerous shocking inconsistencies in the refereeing at crucial moments.

Outside of that - our pack battled well and were on top for an hour.

I really hoped he’d have a good game and step up and seize the moment, but Jack Crowley was really poor tonight. Not our worst performer (Garry Ringrose), but given how pivotal a position it is, he is most culpable for us not pressing home our advantage from a situation where we were on top.

I’m baffled at the decision to take off McCloskey - who was giving us consistent go forward all night long. Ringrose had a shocker- offered nothing in attack and most culpable for the Sititi try which really fucked us. Sheehan was poor by his standards too, and others struggled to get into the game (Osborne, TOB).

I thought Baird, McCloskey, Lowe and Ryan all went pretty well.

Most sickening part of it was the All Blacks were pretty poor, and really didn’t offer a lot.

Farrell needs to wake up and accept that he must change his coaches, pick the best not just his friends.
also he must accept the reality that the country wants to win a World Cup QF, and to do that he must build a squad for 2027. He must rebuild his squad with that in mind and cut the bullshit and stupidity of playing fellas who are going to be too old and too broken by 2027.

The McCloskey sub had all the hallmarks of a sub that was decided yesterday afternoon in a hotel room, because Aki was the man on the bench.

Which is absolute nonsense IMO. We subbed off our best player and left the worst player who plays right beside him out there all because of a terrible selection call on the bench.

Neither are young enough to excuse some of the deficiencies in their game I think. Both need a lot of work.

Hopefully this ends the "X is clearly better than Y" attitude though. Both are clearly flawed players.

We could also realise that they are both young players and are going to have ups and downs…Hopefully Crowley starts next week and is given a chance to redeem himself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭thamus doku

agreed, but we can also surely agree they are playing under a very flawed head coach.

It’s mad that this is the thinking with so many people on here. Ringrose is just back from a Lions tour and is regarded as one of the best centres in the world for years. Farrell has had 1 good season to his name. He is in great form and Ringrose was poor tonight so if he starts vs Australia that’s fine, but Ringrose has a lot of deserved credit in the bank.

Coombes is not a better player than 2 tour test Lion Conan or world player of the year nominee and Irish captain Doris. How many 8s do you want picked in the squad? Similar to Crowley, looks great when he is playing Ospreys and Zebre. Not so much at this level.

Out of the three non Leinster players starting tonight, one lasted four minutes and the other was probably the worst player on the pitch. McCloskey was good so fair play to him.

Out of interest, where are your big injustices? Who should have started that game tonight instead of the 12 Leinster players named?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭almostover

I have to agree with you, he's was the best player on the pitch in green. Strong carries and some nice passes in close quarters. We have to start picking players on form. Why not Stu at 12 and Tom Farrell at 13? We can keep relying on the same combinations over and over.

Ireland were put back in their box in the second half. Disappointing performance while the bench had little impact. There is a LOT to work on.

His man bun is pretty much the only reason my wife watches rugby now that Conor Murray is retired.

Whilst I 100% agree with you, I'm not sure a centre partnership of McCloskey / Aki (67 years) up against a New Zealand center partnership of tupea / faainganuka (52 years) would be preferable in that situation.

Let's face it, aki haven't the legs anymore certainly for the 13 channel. I really cannot think of any 13 playing international test rugby at 35 apart from BOD 11 years ago.

The mistake was putting aki in the 23 shirtm JOB would have been a better option when Jamie Osbourne could have covert both centre positions.

And if he is lets hope he shows it at club level for an extended period in all types of games be they round 1 or knockout.

I hope he doesn't get anywhere near an international set up pre 2027.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 4,992 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

But what does it say about a guy whos leading so much in URC stats, EPCR stats and cant even get a look in. Coombes deserves at least a shot to see what he could do regardless of Conan/Doris. He can play 6/8 and i think you are being unfair on Crowley.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,668 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

    Oh I don't disagree.

The stupidity of selecting Aki at 23 forced us to sub our best player off. This is my point.

Garry Ringrose knew he was under absolutely no jeopardy tonight, he was never getting subbed off. I don't care what anyone says this sort of situation is not good for any player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭almostover

Correct, and let's not forget Sexton didn't debut for Ireland until he was 24 and had plenty of issues in his first few years. Especially goal kicking wise.

But Jack and Sam have plenty to work on and at least we have 2 guys competing for the shirt. And yes hopefully now the bickering can end, neither player is up to scratch currently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,527 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

I think Barrett going off helped NZ hugely at line out time. Had Lord not played basically the full game, our line out win percentage would have been much higher. Not saying our line out is fine but sometimes good defensive jumpers will pick you off (like how Baird did to NZ).

If Barrett was in their defensive line out in the first half, I think we would have built a lot more pressure and likely more tries.

Obviously things went downhill as the match went on. The lack of a half decent search function on this sites means I can't find it, but after the last WC I talked about the need to phase out guys like Henderson, Aki and Ringrose (plus a couple of others). Unfortunately they are all still there and continuing to decline with no replacements in the squad. That is what is most disappointing for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,543 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Sport is all about psychology! A nothing match really even if we won the knockers would say we can't win when it matters. Compare this to the desire of the Munster v Leinster game 2 weeks ago where nothing was left on the pitch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,842 ✭✭✭snotboogie

Good post but I thought our pack was mixed. Conan and VDF started brilliantly but faded, Doris struggled, Henderson and one of his worst games for Ireland. I’d look to that back 5 for radical change against Japan and carry any form to Australia and beyond but that’s obviously not going to happen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭thamus doku

It’s this type of illogical thinking that hurts Irish rugby.

It’s this type of thinking that will see furlong porter and Dorris physically fcuked up by 2027.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,123 ✭✭✭clsmooth

Conan, Lowe, JGP and McCloskey were the best players on the pitch from our side. Don’t remember McCloskey doing a huge amount whilst he was on in the second half though so maybe Farrell felt Aki might lift the team like he did in Cardiff. That wasn’t the losing of the game though.

I’d wouldn’t have preferred JOB or Stockdale on the bench especially since Osborne covers 12 (and probably 13 better than Henshaw, Aki and McCloskey).

I am not against giving Coombes a shot, but Farrell isn’t going to pick three 8s in a squad. If he is picked ahead of a Prendergast/Timoney in the squad, absolutely no problem at all. I just think the calls for him to play as if it would change much are ridiculous, number 6/8 and Baird/Conan/Doris are really not the issue Ireland have at the moment.

I don’t think I’m being unfair on Crowley. He was not good today. Maybe worst player on the pitch is harsh as Ringrose was worse and Henderson offered absolutely nothing, but his all round kicking was very poor and his decision to hold onto that ball that they scored from arguably changed the game.
