He's got 7 years. Interesting comment by his defence lawyer:

Crosbie’s lawyer Daniel Reilly asked the judge for a sentence of three to five years and said his client would work to be a better man.

Doesn't that imply he's now admitting guilt?

No it implies she wants him to get a light sentence.

When flippant comments come back to bite you… even though putting something like this on twitter shows stupidity

Before the sentencing, Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Erin Murphy referenced a 2017 tweet by Crosbie in which he referenced a potential trip to Stockholm, Sweden, for a soccer match.

"Six foot blondes and most unreported rape capital in Europe," she said the tweet read. "Sure, even if it's Vigo versus Lyon, be worth the trip."

reported here before anyone asks for a source

Should've been locked up just for posting such a stupid thing online. What a moron.

A flippant remark that showed a certain mindset, your average man wouldn't even dream of posting something like that.

They dont seem to mention he'll get credit for time served already, assuming he does, the minimum he's looking at is a further 5 and a half years. Its funny how they do it in the states, rather than automatic time off your sentence like in Ireland, you get a min and a max. Im assuming the minimum is if you dont act the bollix but they leave it open to the discretion of the authorities.

All in all, its probably a fair sentence all things considering although I wouldnt have been surprised if he got longer. Sheer stupidity from start to finish and a lesson for everyone.

The sad side is that his family and kids have to suffer as well. How old are they? He deserves it, they don't.

while I’d say most of us wouldn’t dream of posting THAT type of comment I’d say that in WhatsApp or texts or whatever there are a fair few risky messages. Either posted by us or posted by someone we know on a chat thread.

Taken in the context and time of the thread they might seem just like “oh you boys…. Always kidding around” but when reexamined in the cold light of day then a different perspective could be taken.

I think the report from the Boston place I linked said that he will get credit.

Joking about rape wouldn’t be common at all in a thread or WhatsApp group populated by normally law abiding people - it would be very much the exception and to the degree that certainly anyone I know would leave such a group if someone posted such a comment- or that person would be removed - one or the other.

    WHOOOOSH

I said risky messages. Not messages about rape.

But let’s not let the facts or anything get in the way of the ladder to that high horse

    “I said risky messages.”

    So define “risky” so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,779 ✭✭✭knucklehead6

Could be anything really. I’m sure if you publicized every text message, WhatsApp message, Facebook messenger message someone would find something to consider risky.

I’m not searching through however many messages I have in various threads just to satisfy the whims of some random internet sign in.

    You're getting too vague altogether.

If that Crosbie whatsapp message is real, then this mightn't even have been his first time.

reported in multiple sources so no reason to think it’s not real.

It wasn’t a WhatsApp message it was tweet he posted online.

Knucklehead, on threads like this if you’re not 100% in step with the herd, you’re instantly branded a racist, a rapist, or accused of condoning both. Genuine discussion isn’t acceptable anymore, it gets shut down with the kind of overblown, American-style accusations of paedophilia, rape or worse. Even the slightest hint of “maybe” or “consider…” is met with condemnation.

I simply suggested that trying to get out of a country like the USA, once you’ve been accused of something heinous, would be a sensible move for anyone, guilty or innocent. That point alone was enough to unleash a torrent of do-gooders and self-styled social justice warriors. Let them have the last word, that's what they yearn in their keyboard life. Walk away.

    Or not flippant at all…

I see neither jury were told about it and I'd say the second jury are feeling very pleased with themselves for coming to the right decision anyway.

It was hardly a sensible move for this predatory rapist.

@Thorny Queen. The rapist in the the white house had an Irish rapist as a guest on Paddys day. Why was he allowed in the country in the 1st place? He certainly wasn't kicked out of the place. They are hypocrites there. If u have money the law doesn't apply to u. Our system is completely flawed but I'd take it over the American system any day.

Your posts throughout this thread are beyond farcical. You have no idea what happened in that room or indeed the extent of the evidence the jurors heard. You've convinced yourself he did it, and are intent on slating anyone who dares question the verdict.

I agree none of this case makes for pleasant reading but, the fact there have been two trials and conflicting evidence suggests there may be an element of reasonable doubt, however small. Maybe open your mind to that possibility.

The judge in this case rejected prosecution counsel's attempts to include these historic tweets as part of it's evidence against the accused. Quite correctly, in my view, as they are completely irrelevant to this particular trial. As regards the material itself, whilst unpleasant to read, the comments seem to be jocular in tone with not even an implied threat on the part of the author to commit physical harm to another. An example of coarse Dublin working class humour, you could say, and that can be very coarse and graphic at times.

I get coarse working class stuff from friends all the time racist stuff I wouldn't repeat etc. but they never go on about raping women in other cities

Would a completely innocent man, with a clear conscience, attempt to furtively do a runner like Crosbie attempted to do ? I don't think so. It was a highly suspicious manoeuvre on his part but the real clincher was his bizarre explanation why his DNA might have been found on the victim - the masturbation story - and his comments made to police during questioning regarding the definition of rape and whether the victim claimed she had been held down. This was before the cops had even released the exact details of the type of assault involved. So, three major red flags pointing toward his guilt there.

If he hadn't attempted to abscond and kept his mouth shut he could be a free man today or his protestations of innocence would seem far more credible, at least.

Though his name has been mentioned in various articles about this case, there was never a clear reason give as to why the only other person in the room that night refused to testify. This is the man that the victim admitted to sleeping with, Crosbie's roommate.

It's likely easy to dismiss or explain his absence, he could just say he slept through the entire commotion. There might be other strains on his life too, for example if he was also a married man then the whole situation likely had a huge impact on his own life and just wanted to stay out of matters.

    The case was televised.

We know what happened in the room because the rape victim told us, the rapist lied from the start.

But if you would like to explain why you think he is innocent, by all means work away.

It was the nonsense of a cowardice dullard who just raped a woman.

His own testimony was she was never in his bed, also he claims he masturbated in the morning when his room mate was at breakfast. The didn't get to the hotel until after 4.

There is zero reasonable doubt here, it is a sound and just verdict.
