Michael is actually admitting that asylum seekers (and family unification) are attributing to the housing crisis!

I have to listen back to that piece. It sounded a wee bit desperate and not thought through

She couldn't keep it calm for the first segment of the interview, she saw her name in lights and was firing out question after question before he had even began to answer the last one. MM loves that as it allows him to assume the role of the measured adult in the interview.

Good to hear RBB back on the airwaves.

He's been through the mill but has a positive diagnosis.

A good old fashioned leg-up from the national broadcaster.

    Some things never change.

CB signed off for the last time on RTE today.

All the best to her in the new job at Newstalk.

    PS Gay

A fitting tribute to a legend of Irish broadcasting.

New book of Gay Byrne letters a bittersweet tribute https://share.google/783kvvyEvqXzCgNgw

She leaves behind a legacy of 5 years of boring radio.

And she won't really be missed TBH. Over paid at the end of the day. Did you hear about all of the shannigans in RTÉ over the past 7 years or so, just you've been quiet quite on the other thread.

Good luck to her in Newstalk but in all fairness she was very very mediocre at best. Not that she'll be worried or feel agrieved by what I've written but she took RTE to the cleaners for her 10 hrs a week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,197 ✭✭✭✭elperello

I must say I never found her boring.

That's not say I enjoyed every segment but that's to be expected in a 2 hour magazine type show.

I'm looking forward to David McCullough's tenure but may flit over to CB on Newstalk some of the time.

We done to Claire, a great broadcaster and journalist. RTÉ were silly to let her go, as though McCullagh is a good writer, he is not a particularly good broadcaster.

But then again, I don't suppose they are able to match what Bauer Media can offer these days. And if Claire Byrne can do much better out of them, then fair play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,197 ✭✭✭✭elperello

She certainly won't be missed being only a flick of the dial away on Newstalk.

We've often discussed financials in the past and seldom agreed.

That's all in the past and best left there.

I remain an avid radio listener.

Claire will not have the same effect as Pat Kenny's move, I'd suggest she may see a drop in audience but we won't know until late next year as she start on Newstalk in February, Pat's move was a much bigger issue.

But you must surely agree that RTÉ was not financially sound or ran in an proper way? IMO its only 2 years ago at this stage and if you have read any of the newspapers today there is still much fallout.

I remain an avid TV viewer / streamer. But it doesn't have to include RTÉ and it now sadly rarely does.

Pat is still a bit of a phenomenon after all the years.

I do read the papers and I even drop into your thread now and again on a "read only" basis.

I don't have to rely on RTE either with all the choice we have nowadays.

The BBC have got 9 licence fee increases since 2008, none for RTE. Although the RTE fee went up a lot during the Tiger. Politicians here are terrified of broaching the subject since the crash, and especially after the failed water charges. The Digital Switch Over happened around 2012 with no extra fee income.

So all the shenannigans about salaries cost us nothing extra in licecence fee money, and the salaries have all come down in more recent times. Pat Kenny was the top earner in RTE I think over the whole time. The licence fee not keeping up with inflation and running costs has meant subventions from general taxation. But it would probably be only a few cents a week for each of us. Anyone who does pay also has to pay extra to make up for those who don't pay.

You can post if you want always happy to have a circular argument, I am happy for anyone to disagree with me or to correct me. You agree I have some knowledge of what I am talking about.

A number of initiatives where set up for RTÉ over that period, including one minister providing them with an extra 50m over the course of 5 years and another allowing them to get rid of their Symphony Orchestra and Choir saving them 7m a year. (Which RTÉ were put off moving to the NCH for a whole year, Imagine that saving allow RTÉ make a profit this year, otherwise it would have been a loss).

Many of the salary came down due to death and retirements, if you look at that 1% cost it really only fell little and mainly due to exits.

You seem to be suggesting that Dee Forbes and Moya Doherty were on top of their game over the last 7 years.

I don't pay because it is a badly run company, and the collection by An Post is badly run. You might argue that maybe then move it to the exchequer but TG4 during the downturn saw their funding reduced and who pick up the bill?

Imagine going to the begging bowl every year and failing to actually cut, but they seems to be able to cut on Children's Content (excused by Children don't watch TV anymore, you think RTÉ only existed as a broadcaster), Drama (excused because it has to be on a par with the BBC), Comedy (well they never did that) and so much more, we now see that the presenters of a Daytime show that run for just 8months are on 200K a year.

And you seem to think that between 2000 and 2012 when RTÉ were getting increases that they were good! They were slightly better.

30% evasion rate and climbing year on year.

Also at any point during the last 25 years the Executive Board and the Leadership teams could have waived their Car Allowance worth between 19K and 25K each year. They didn't.

Ive paid my licence for many years but its getting difficult to justify 160eu for the absolute horse manure RTE have on their channels. I get a very small bit of value from R1, but it is limited. There's probably 3 shows I tune into now and again. Claire Byrne, Drivetime (although Cormac is painful) and John creedon if im in the car.

Endless repeats of Kilnascully, Diarmuid Gavin, cheap Irish homes and Mrs Browns boys is not value for money….nor is the rotating guest list on shows like the Late Late and their current affairs shows are gone to complete pot, and that used to be a strong point for RTE. Its just not anymore.

Aside from a handful of rugby /hurling games…there is nothing for me.

RTE in no way deserve an increase in licence fees to continue pouring money into a broadcaster that is getting worse by the year, with vastly overpaid "talent" churning out absolute muck. RTE are most definitely not the BBC, and their output is nowhere near the same quality (budgets taken into account). They're not even in the same ballpark. lets be real

A feature of Boards is that individuals want broadcasters to design bespoke stations for them. They sometimes post congratulating a station for playing one of their favourite songs. Usually because it is some obscure song which "nobody" has ever heard of.

But broadcasters have to cater to the whole population. 24 hours a day from a few radio and TV stations, gives enough choice for a chance to satisfy the most people. Irish language and classical music are minority interests, but they get a good allocation. Sport is marmite subject, some want more, some want none. 7% of the licence fee goes to the private sector to produce public service type programmes as well. The money paid to top "talent" is only a drop in the ocean, but it causes a lot of resentment.

It would be an odd world where programmes and films were only ever shown once. Whole TV channels in the UK are dedicated to repeats, and they seem to do well. Even the sub genre of a menu of full time quizzes on repeat. And some people seem to love the QVC type stuff and religion always makes money. No accounting for tastes as the saying goes.

It's well known that Newstalk has offered her less money.

For a great journalist I can't think of a single good interview she did.

I agree about David Mc though - he's not great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭SPDUB

Sport is marmite subject, some want more, some want none.

Indeed the likes of RTE and BBC should be paid for promoting sports by showing it on TV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,076 ✭✭✭RoTelly

But should they give equal time to miniority sports?

Every sport is a minority sport. Every interest is a minority interest. RTE is a minority station, as are all the rest. I am for the widest choice that broadcasters can afford to provide.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,076 ✭✭✭RoTelly

So they should try to compete with Sky for sporting rights, where possible?

Sport is in no way a minority, from what I can see broadcast is wall to wall sport. I get live sport, but can't get my head around how much talk there is about it, 3 hours a night on Newstalk, 1 hour on 2FM, plenty more at the weekend.

It really is well served if not in danger of being saturated.

RTÉ have made the decision to move Game On over to Radio 1 in the same time slot, sport has a large fan base surely Arena would be better served at 6pm sandwiched between Drivetime and Game On.

While I don't intend to take it up at the moment never say never.

I don't think I ever questioned your knowledge of the subject.

No, but you were steadfast in your views and I honestly hoped you might have changed your mind, considering everything. You know I am a huge fan of PBS but not what RTÉ have been providing for the last 20 odd years. And I was once a huge fan of RTÉ.

I remember in early 2020, at the start of COVID, Claire was broadcasting to the nation from her garden shed, having to isolate, because she said she "got a dose".

Great comment on here at the time in the COVID thread,

    "she is a dose!"
