What's the story with Conor Boylan? Did he opt out of Limerick panel last year to go travelling? Still has alot to offer county team I would think?

Massive task for Na Piarsiagh to tackle Ballygunner in the Munster club.

Ballygunner have knocked the Limerick champions out for the last six years in a row. Na Piarsiagh got closest to them two years ago, with a 4 point defeat.

Ballygunner scored 2-35 in their county final. That game was several weeks ago due to the system Waterford have of playing hurling off in one block.

Ballygunner didn't look great last year. If it wasn't Doon's first time out they could have won it.

Ide say it's a 50/50 game with the winner obviously then being favourites for Munster.

I’d say not being brought on in the 24 semi final against Cork with only 4 subs used probably told him he wasn’t trusted by management to make any difference. With the exception of Gillane that starting forward line was a beaten docket in the second half. 3 of them were replaced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,971 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

That forward line scored 29 points and finished strongly pulling the Cork lead back.

The only mistake with the subs was they were too late but the right changes were made. Shane O’Brien for Flanagan (52), Adam English for Reidy (53), Darragh O’Donovan for O’Donoghue (53), Aidan O’Connor for T Morrissey (63). Mul and O'Dalaigh were far more likely to come on ahead of him too..

well then he knows he’s surplus to requirements and moved on. Came on previous years including Croke Park and made a difference. He probably expected a run.

Highlights were on TG4 a few minutes ago. O'Donovan's goal was even better than I realised. Didn't notice he soloed it in the first time.

Sadly didn't Will O'Donoghue thinking he was Declan Hannon and nailing one form way out the pitch. For a man who can't shoot it was some attempt.

Also was great to have the anthem played by a band after all that dire shte at the soccer and rugby.

I was disappointed with the crowd I was central enough and there was I won't say plenty but there were seats available.

The senior match never caught fire despite the quality on show boylan made a big difference as already said. For me though effin will feel the worst how many opportunities had they in last few minutes to finish off the match?

County finals just aren't a big deal for neutrals now.

Dublin couldn't even come close to selling out Parnell for the football final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Agree that the County Final does not seem to be the big occasion as it once once and not a big draw for neutrals. Is the split season impacting this and it so long since the inter county season finished that the GAA is out of the general publics thoughts or possibly even for the families that follow their clubs that there is possibly a bit of tiredness setting in attending match after match with the crammed scheduled.

" Is the split season impacting this"

I doubt it. It has being going this way for a long time now because people have more and more options. It's only the big events get the crowds in any sport now.

    Hannon announces his retirement 🏆

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,196 ✭✭✭✭billyhead

Saw that. He had a great career. Pity he couldn't bow out with an All Ireland medal last July but he owes us nothing.

Yea I agree but in truth I suppose it was always like this. It's the glamour and of course the quality on show that people want to see.

Just a word on declan hannon, what a player I hope he has a very happy retirement and is successful at what ever he decides to do

Hannon was the lynchpin of the Limerick team throughout an unprecedented period of success.

Made a massive contribution and walks away with a list of honours that none of us ever thought we'd see any Limerick hurlers achieve.

Best of luck to declan hannon. A great servant of limerick hurling long before the glory days.

His wife will probably be more famous than him now ha ha.

Ticket prices aren't helping, split season nothing to do with it, as mentioned people have more choices these days too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Declan Hannon was a great leader, humble, devoid of ego and a great ambassador for Limerick. His humility permeated through this Limerick team and his leadership was the cornerstone of this great team. It was a remarkable achievement to captain a team to 5 All Irelands and 6 Munsters in a row particularly for a county that had gone 45 years without winning All Ireland.

Rte reporting Seamus Flanagan. Jason gillane. Fergal o Connor Cian scully Michael houlihan released from limerick panel.

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t the panel dissolve following inter county season and everybody if available are fit for selection in Jan

It’s not like their contract expired in the summer.

yeah Dowling makes sense. But as if Seamus Flanagan is the reason for that shy8 show In croke park v Dublin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,971 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Dowling came back to add experience while Quaid was out so makes sense for him not to commit. Heard a lot of rumours about Gillane's attitude and also sadly Hanley-Clarke's commitment so the goalkeeper position might need a big rethink.

Flanagan's form has been poor or average for quite a while now and is too inconsistent to bank on. No problem moving on there.

Fergal O'Connor didn't set the world alight but sad to see him go. He still had time to develop and he apparently had a good club season this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,993 ✭✭✭johnnyryan89

Yeah I'm not surprised if Flanagan gets dropped. He's also young enough at 28 I think that if he came back in for 2027 he'd still have a couple of years left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 179 ✭✭biglad40isback

yep. At least give them a few mins in league at least

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭C4000

Na Piarsiagh at 7/1 to win the munster club is decent value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 395 ✭✭Iecrawfc

Kiely is cleaning house a little, will be interesting who he brings in as replacements especially goalkeeping options as the holder will likely inherit the no 1 jersey in the next few years. The others, apart from Flanagan, are your standard 'spent a few years on the panel but didn't push onto the 26' players mostly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 218 ✭✭HurlingBoy

Only major surprise is Flanaghan. I would go back to analogy that "Form is temporary, class is permanent". Seamus's form has dipped the last 18 months or so but even if not starting would put pressure on the like's of Shane O'Brien for the full forward position. Have we enough talent coming through to release Seamus. I'm not so sure. Dowling was always going to be a temporary solution while Nicky was out. Others fall into the criteria of fringe squad players so there is probably a few more in this category so they can consider themselves unlucky to be cut.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭C4000

The writing was on the wall for Flanagan unfortunately. The incident v Cork in the league game seemed to spark something of a falling out with management. He did a couple of interviews/ podcasts over the summer which were critical of Kiely.

Great player at his best. 8 points from play in the 22 munster final and always linked brilliantly with Gillane.

The age profile of the panel is changing. Dan Morrissey and Reidy will be 33 next year. Hegarty, O Donoghue and Byrnes will be 32. Quaid will be 37. There will be a major changing of the guard in the next couple of years.

Kiely will pick a panel of 34/35 players every year. There is usually changes year on year with 3/4 players dropped and 3/4 called in
