Have a set of these on my winter bike for ahem 10 years now!- I haven’t been keeping up with gear etc but I only punctured twice in all those years. Both tyres have big flat spots on them and I guess it’s time to replace so what would ye recommend? Are gatorskins still a thing even?

yes Gatorskins are still on the go. Or if you’re feeling fancy, you could go for Gator Hardshells

ten years out of a pair of tyres is good going…

Gators are lethal in wet conditions, had them on a bike years ago, had a lucky escape on a wet spin and took them off, staying upright far more important than punctures.

Schwalbe Durano Plus for me - average about 1 puncture per 5,000k. (I used to run Gators but after a few butt clenching moments in the wet, I lost faith in them).

Tried Conti 5000 and 4 Seasons but punctured regularly in them (although they do roll beautifully).

Always found the Durano plus a great puncture proof as much as possible tyre can be a little harder to put on the first time but seem straight forward enough after a bit .They cost a good bit less than the Conti ones even if the rolling is not as good but at my level that is not an issue .

    GP 5000 all year round

Yes indeed. A puncture is quicker to fix than a collarbone.

Can I jump inhere too as I need new tyres on my road bike (23mm tyres) - still using stock ones but they are worn

I do very short commute distances - max 30km per week

priority is will be ok in the wet and puncture proof, don't care about speed or weight as my distances are so short and priority is to get from A-B safely (even when raining)!

From above it seems GP5000 or Durano Plus would both be good - any preference?

    Thanks a lot

In my experience Durano plus better for puncture protection ,I think they are aimed more at the leisure end of cycling than the more expensive conti GP 5000 which are more for the faster riders ,I use them on my better bike but have the Durano on the rainy day /winter bike and have had few punctures .

    yeah, GP5000s wouldn't be considered a winter/commute tyre.

i run hutchinson fusion winter tyres on my winter bike, and they're near EOL, but they are much harder to find these days. decathlon used to stock them, but not anymore (their tyre selection is very poor these days anyway).

Durano plus way better than gator (which are downright dangerous in the wet)

I ride them all year round without issues. Punctures are rare until it's regular. I typically get a year out of them and that's being cautious. From a commuter POV, grip is exceptional, holds up better than any other road tyre, I'd sooner a GP5000 than a gatorskin if ail if I need to haul on brakes in an emergency but again, probably over dramatising.

I used Durano Plus on my commuter bike, when I was able to cycle to and from work and only ever had one puncture in the 3+ years I used them

Depends on your bike really - you're not going to put Durano+ on your road bike for example.

Maybe an old beater hybrid or a high nelly or Dutch bike perhaps.

Sorry, I have a road bike, so Durano Plus won't work for it after all? If it's just a weight thing that's fine, I don't mind heavy as I am only doing short commutes, not racing or long distancces

    Thanks for all the advice

Plenty of us use Durano plus on road bikes. Not sure how serious that other post was but maby he was thinking about marathon plus tyres which are near bullet proof but not really for road bikes .Go into a bike shop if you want further proof .There is a lot of overkill in cycling like other sports interms of clothing and equipment, the fine margins you get from things only really matter at race level etc not for a leisure spin or a commute to work .

If you want to suck any potential enjoyment out of your use of your road bike by all means stick any tyre with a "+" designation on it 😄

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. I will of course ask in the shop that I'll be getting them in too, but I always like to be a bit informed about something I know absolutely nothing about, so I don't just follow advice blindly. Thanks a million.
