    I was really surprised to see Alex Dunne leave McLaren since it seemed like a great place for him to develop. Still, it might turn out to be a smart move. This piece gives some good insight into what happened and what might be next for him. With Marko reportedly showing interest, a future with Red Bull could be a huge opportunity if it comes together.

    Still speculation for now. His next f2 race isn't until Qatar at end of November, so wouldn't be surprised if we don't hear anything until much closer to then.

    I saw that too but it was (I think, anyway) from a click-baity type outlet (can't even remember the name which somewhat confirms the clickbaity-ness to me). Mentioned concern over the number of penalty pointson his licence also

    I saw headline too from the usual rubbish f1 sites. I suspect he was talking specifically about f1 seat in 2026, not joining junior red bull team.

    Formula 2 talent Arvid Lindblad is another hot property in the Red Bull roulette wheel for the remaining three cockpits next year. Does Marko believe the 18-year-old Swede can make the leap to the premier class of motorsport? "Generally speaking, yes," reveals the 82-year-old. "He's just younger than Hadjar. And we've seen in the past that age plays a role in Formula 1. But generally speaking, he's another one of our hopes. We'll see him in the car this year, too." Alex Dunne is definitely not going to be seen in a Red Bull car. The young talent was released by McLaren a few weeks ago and was subsequently linked with the British-Austrian racing team. "He's not an option for us," said Marko about Dunne.

    That’s a massive shame if it’s true.

    Again I read that as just confirming he's not an option for the f1 teams. Which I don't think anybody was thinking anyway

    All the rumours linking him with Red Bull came from press speculation, not Dunne himself. The comments from Marko saying he was "very like a Red Bull driver" and that they were looking at him, were seized upon without any comfirmation.

    There's obviously something on the cards, otherwise he wouldn't have left McLaren with immediate effect. If they were parting ways, it would have come at the end of the F2 season. With only a few races left it wouldn't make sense to drop him now.

    I mentioned over in the Mexican Grand Prix thread that Alex Dunne was discussed extensively during FP1 radio coverage by the BBC, here is said coverage. It's interesting to hear, or rather not hear, what Andrew Benson knows about what went down between Alex's negotiating team and McLaren. I think the discussion leans towards Alex at around the 10:20 mark.

    This too shall pass.

    I think it's a thought I've had too, that Dunne jumped off the McLaren bus before another one had come around. So he's not in a position of strength negotiating for another program.

    He might get taken up by RB (VCARB), but it'll be on their terms.

    Either Dunne has risked fùcking himself by leaving McLaren early or there was a gardening clause inserted that meant while no longer a McLaren driver they would let him keep his F2 seat for the season on condition he didn't join RB until the season was done.

    His F2 seat is with Rodin Motorsport. McLaren may have provided some sponsorship, but the majority of that was provided by Dunne himself.

    I think people need to consider whether Alex is simply considered an outsider without the necessary connections or money to make it in F1. Looking at yesterdays practise - we had 9 x development drivers on the track. Dunne was not one of them. Many were drivers who clearly arent as talented as him.

    Its also clear that he's been treated poorly with penalties. No chance any of the nepo-hires or more connected drivers get penalised for the same things. They are ckearly sending him a message that they"re not interested.

    The development drivers in FP1 is mandated by the FIA. Each driver has to get two sessions. Alex got two goes this year already. Not being a McLaren driver any more would have excluded him anyway.

    He's definitely been unlucky with two penalties that weren't his fault. But other drivers have been penalised heavily too. Arvid Lindblad got two five place grid penalties after Monza.

    Theres mo limit on the amount a driver can do, just that each senior driver has to skip 2 FP1's. Hirakawa has done 3 for Haas already.

    I didn't say there was an upper limit, just that Alex had got his two sessions so McLaren aren't (weren't) obliged to give him more.

    I think it’s 2 per car, so 4 total. Either way he wouldn’t have been at Mexico anyway.

    I do hope he didn’t leave McLaren without something lined up, that could be the end of it right there.

    A lot of people, including those in the BBC in the video keep mentioning his “management team,” but as far as I know, it’s basically just his dad, Noel and that might be part of the issue. He's done a great job getting him this far, but at this level you really need professional management for the business side: contracts, negotiations, long-term planning, etc. Eg Alonso’s A14 Management who have a stable of drivers or how Verstappen and Hamilton both moved on from their dads once things got serious.

    Imo, McLaren were getting annoyed with all the Red Bull rumours and wanted commitment. They gave two options: take a reserve role or do another F2 season, with WEC on the table for 2027 if no F1 seat opened up. We don’t know exactly how much Marko was in the ear while they were still at McLaren, but I’d bet it was a lot, particularly as he knew it would also annoy McLaren. And once they left, he cooled off fast, classic Marko. My guess is Noel got a bit carried away (understandably) after all the F1 buzz following Austria and may have thought they'd be lining up to sign Alex after he left.

    Personally, I think Alex should’ve stayed with McLaren. That door could open sooner than people think, especially if Piastri’s situation gets increasingly tense, a lot of folks saw that coming. Now he’s stuck with no F1 backing and another make-or-break F2 season that could go either way. Rafa Camara has been announced at Invicta and looks like the clear favourite for the title. If Alex had landed in the other Invicta seat, he’d probably be right up there too.

    They really need to get some professional management involved alongside Noel. I’m sure Noel’s great, but family decisions can get emotional and at this stage you need someone thinking purely in business terms.

    I don’t think the F1 dream is over for Alex though. If he delivers in F2, there’s still a path into Racing Bulls or maybe Alpine, and he just needs to be in the right place when it opens. He is funded in F2 for 2 full seasons by his sponsor's, so he should be able to race without F1 backing. However that statement may have included McLaren funding so he may be short. I hope it all goes well for him but things can go pear shaped very fast, look at what happened Zak O'Sullivan.

    As it stands it looks like a very silly decision to walk away from McLaren if he has nothing else signed and sealed. We can only hope he has some kind of garden leave with McLaren before he is free to sign for anyone else. You'd imagine McLaren wouldn't have protected themselves contract wise after investing in him and giving him two test sessions in an F1 car.

    Whatever the offer was with McLaren, it seems he was walked into an abyss of options now. F2 seats are filling up fast, the rookie FP outings at Mexico caught some eyes as well.

    What’s even more perplexing is that McLaren genuinely highly rated him and were investing heavily in his future. They say there’s no loyalty and you have to be selfish in F1, but you’d better have something solid signed and sealed before you burn bridges with your current team, as Piastri did while at Alpine, the deal was signed behind their backs.

    I feel like we'll hear something before the F2 season ends. There's no obvious reason to end their deal early unless he had something lined up, so I'm assuming/hoping that they just have to wait a bit before announcing it.

    But we'll see. It's a cutthroat business...

    The best he can do now for himself is blitz the last 2 rounds of this season and remind everyone why he's so talked about (without incidents)

    Any movement or noise on what's going on with Dunne? He's back racing in f2 next week in Qatar, right?

    A local TD asking the government to fund Dunne next season isnt a good sign. Sounds like he's struggling to fund a drive.
