Apart from playing interclub and my short game marginally improving, I've had a shocker. Handicap has increased 2 strokes and my game is very inconsistent, best score year to date has been 33 points. Complete reset required for the winter.

I had 2 goals starting this year to try and get out in more weekly comps and to try and break 100. Neither has been successful up to now.

So far this summer bar a few society outings which are great it has been mainly casual rounds. I don't know many members at my club so I am slightly reluctant to add my name to the tee sheet with people I don't know as of yet. (ridiculous I know)

On the break 100 front I have been getting closer, the closest being a 101 on my home course (par 73) 2 weeks ago. 7 bogeys a double and a triple on the front night gave me a +12 49 on the front 9 followed by 3 more bogeys on 10/11 and 12. The wheels came off a bit then with some really poor mistakes I think I had started to think about the 100 and ended up triple bogey 13/14 & 15. Par on 16 and bogey on 17 still gave me a decent chance on the par 5 last hole but after 2 nice shots to put me in prime position i duffed 2 shots in a row from inside 100 yards and ended up with another triple bogey 8 to finish on +16 52 on back 9 for a total of 101.

My best round to date but still left feeling a bit sick tbh. Sums up the game I suppose :)

Don't have much advice on the golf front, but with putting yourself down on the sheet with strangers - absolutely get out with as many strangers as you can. After 18 holes of golf and chatting, you're no longer strangers. I joined a club last year and every week I'm playing with new people and getting to know members. You won't (most likely) get to know people in the club house but you definitely will by getting out to play.

Thanks a million. I know I need to get over myself and just start booking slots. I am gonna try and get a couple of the comps in the next few weeks

Does your club have a long handicap comp usually mid week 9 or 11 holes type of thing.. These boys are usualy a very socialable gang in every club..

There isn't a comp as you described but there is a midweek scramble which I'm told is good so I might start there and see how it goes.

100% agree. I was in a similar position a couple of years ago and resisted for 12 months which was wasted time. I still haven’t any “friends” as such who I specifically play with but know loads of people to play with now. Of course you’ll come across a few that you enjoy playing with more than others and some that you might feel you’re a third wheel but honestly I’ve never had anyone rude or not welcoming. Go for it - golfers expect to play with strangers and if they really don’t want to they’ll book together so there won’t be a space.

With the highs comes the lows....

And with are last qualifying event Oct medal played yesterday that ends the season sadly…

    1. Handicap - started year at 13.5 finished at 16.5 😥
    2. Win a medal! Although I won GOTY 2024. I never won a medal after finishing 2nd in two and 3rd in three 🙄 - a disaster of year in medals after relishing them last year i dreaded them this year only picking up 5 pts from 7 medals 🤦‍♂️
    3. Make the Jug team with Boards- yes 💪
    4. Give GOTY a run with Boards - NO
    5. Win a Boards outing - won Captains 😁
    6. More distance with clubs - I have been working on this & a recent unplanned lessen has greatly improved this. 7i gone from 150yds to 170yds on the range with just a better set up. Just need to transfer it onto the course now. - seeing some improvements after taking a different route from going from a golf fitness coach to lessons which are working better..
    7. Good showing in all Majors, Club & Boards - Apart from The Captains in Boards. I've been very poor in all Majors sadly but im putting this down to working on golf fitness stupidly & losing out on playing time + new baba in the house 😁

Let's hope i improve in 2026... On a positive note my short game has improved alot highly recommend Dan Grieves book The 3 releases 👌 I actually have a short game now 😀

    1. Still happy and healthy. But I played the fewest amount of games this year since I re-took up the game. 12 games at my home course in total over the year is not good value for money.
    2. two over gross (with a bogey on the last) in Feb at PM links here with the boards society to win the event! Level par was technically on the cards! My only good game of the year. I played most of my golf in april and may with a golfing holiday seeing me play 4 days in a row at rosapenna and then portstewart. Rosapenna was the golfing highlight of my year and my 3 rounds were in the 70's there.

I'm very eager to try get out more before the end of the month, and have a round at my home course booked for this weekend, which I'm looking forward to.

That's gas @swededmonkey , this is almost exactly how my year has gone, but I feel differently to you about it. Tbf, I was injured until late April & I got one shot back cos of that injury, from my handicap committee. However since then I've actually played a lot, unfortunately to little effect sadly.

I think I shot one 41pts round which was only 3rd that day, and other than that my best days were 33/34/35pts. So not great at all. Equally in team golf, I didn't make our 4 ball final, which is always a goal, & I also missed our interclub competition team as I was only just back from injury then.

The funny thing is I'm not that frustrated at all tbh. My long game is actually really, really good and I'm so happy to be healthy & fit again, and also my home course has been simply wonderful to play this year, it's been in the best condition I ever remember in nearly 30 years playing there. Tbh it's been a dream season really. It's mostly been my short game that has let me down scoring, but that's been getting better & better these past few weeks, so I'm actually feeling optimistic about the winter & 2026.

I feel I can now set some solid, big, hairy assed goals for 2026 now e g. Back down to 10, win a medal (I normally only play in them at all if I'm playing well), try to get at least 1 birdie in every round, reduce my bogeys, & eliminate doubles or worse, hit 2 out of 3 par 3s in regulation every round, and finally hone my short game to become a strength rather than a hindrance....

So a lot to play for!!!

My goal was simple, play more courses, I get bored very quickly from playing home course and have the target to play all our courses. I don't do cold golf so am basically done now for the year. Played 40 different courses this year, 32 of which were new to me.

Now have 78 courses to play and I'll have done all the 18h courses in Ireland, I reckon 3 years.

That's brilliant. From the ones you have played so far have you a Top 10?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭ronjo

    had 2 goals this season.

    1. stay single digits and 2. win senior club championship.

I am 5.3 now (started 9.5) so that was successful but was beaten in a play off for the senior after original winner was disqualified 4 days after the comp ended….. A complete a utter farce when it seems eventual winner screwed the original.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,675 ✭✭✭big_drive

What's the story there, why would someone be disqualified 4 days later? This is knockout matchplay yes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,479 ✭✭✭ronjo

It was a complete shambles. 2 day stroke play (I live in Slovakia). I was in 3rd last flight and shot a really good round. 2 lads in last flight detest each other. One Slovak and other Hungarian who both only speak own language and both have dodgy reputations. Hungarian lad cant play in Hungary due to this.

Hungarian lad won by 2 from three of us including Slovak above. Issue was he shot 5 on last hole but signed for 4. Not sure exactly what happened but seems Slovak said 5, Hungarian confirmed 5 but Slovak wrote 4 and Hungarian didnt check when signing. Complete and utter scumbag behaviour if thats what happened.

Third lad in flight left immediately as he was winning and ballsed last two holes and then wrote official letter of complaint a few days later (when he supposedly just noticed the scores) which was investigated. Hungarian admitted he had 5 and was ultimately disqualified.

Not sure what would happen in such case in Ireland.

    Interesting year.

And set goals relative to reality of year ahead.

Delighted I did everything I set out to do, least golf i played in 10 years plus.

But, was pleasantly suprising how much I enjoyed when i could play and the fact I could still get into the 70s with little or no practice. At times not playing amazing , but just scoring somehow..

It really makes me ponder about all them years on range and questioning what was it all about , or maybe that is why i could play well ..i dont know...

Off to Portstewart next week.. one of my favourite course north and south. Would love something in 70s there ...but calm down lad...

A lovely end to a year of pragmatism and slow progress..

A friend of mine told me at the start of year , there is more to life than golf..and whilst I hated that at the time..as the year passed he was right . Other sports , cultural stuff , arts , lost friends and family connections...Dublin , what a city to rediscover...

Ill have to think about 2026 ..and again set goals that are realistic and achievable and not do or die...Golf is an amazing game ...but there is more out there..

Some story, wouldn't like to be playing with either of those guys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,850 ✭✭✭blue note

I'm hoping to get 2 more rounds in, so I don't regard my year as done yet. But, if people are posting sure I'll join in.

    1. I successfully got the snip back in May. Everyone says it's a quick, painless procedure. They're half right, it is quick. But plan for a few days of doing absolutely nothing for the recovery and stick to the plan! On day 4 I thought I was well enough for a bit of gardening. Terrible idea. A few days of ice and a few days of nothing remotely strenuous is what is needed. I'm glad it's done, but I'm glad I won't be getting another too.
    2. If I play twice more I'll be on 14. Not too bad considering.
    3. Handicap has stayed put. That's partly because I only have 8 rounds recorded from this year and my counting ones at the start of the year were mainly from those 12 left on my handicap record. But there are a couple of decent ones in there, so I don't see it ballooning over the next while. It might go up a little.
    4. Penalty strokes are absolutely killing me. I'm averaging over 4 a round, most of those resulting in 3 (or 5) from the tee. I'm even shooting some decent scores with heaps of penalties. 7 lost balls with the society in Rathsallagh this year - 36 points. 8 lost balls in Deer Park - 32 points. It's a miracle I haven't had to walk in from a round due to running out of balls.
    5. Only 1 Sunday comp this year. Kids activities getting in the way.
    6. I don't think I had any eagle this year. And I'm certain none on a par 3.
    7. I got to 3 Boards outings. Not bad in fairness, it was the most I could have made.
    8. Hard to improve much without playing more, but my wedges haven't been bad at all. And not duffing them or hitting them thin makes a big difference to your score.
    9. The college outing - generally my worst golf of the year. This year was no different. I equalled the worst score on my handicap record in Headfort - 100 shots. The +3 lad wasn't playing, so I was surely going to win the best gross (I even bought and donated a prize to the group for it). One of the lads with double my handicap played pretty well and came in with 98 shots. The problems started in the bar before the round. I'm not a fan of drinking and golfing, but rounds were bought before the round. I lost 2 balls on the first tee. Another off the second. If I remember correctly I lost 5 balls on the first 4 holes. It was not a round to remember, it was the other kind. Unfortunately I did the drinking to forget before the round.

Did you find you lost much length off the tee after getting the snip @blue note ? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,850 ✭✭✭blue note

Length is fine. Affected my stance for a while.

I know when I saw "getting the snip" on his 'golfing goals' post, I was thinking this is a bit out there, what some guys do for the game hey!? :)

P.s. no mention of the missus either, just get back to golfing more!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭billy3sheets

No mention of getting the snip in his original 2025 goals either. He should've told us really 😁

    So for me

    1. Play more:

Definitely did this, the season pass didn't work out in the end but will go again next year. iGolf was a fantastic choice, got to play loads of courses through open comps and get some of those competition jitters out of the way.

    2. Lower the handicap and break 90 more regularly:

Check. Official handicap is currently at 18 and I've been playing a lot of good golf but just not as many opportunities for counting rounds, so really pleased. Shot two 90s in a row and then broke 90 in my local, and then shot an 87 last week which was my best score around any course. +5 through the back 9.

    3. Challenge myself competitively:

Check. Have played 16 rounds competitively this year across various societies and open comps. Bag of nerves at the opening Boards soc, but have played well at the work soc and have won a few prizes.

We got to play Lahinch last week with the work soc (what a privilege by the way) and played bogey golf around the front nine, including a scratch on 7, and didn't lose a single ball the whole way throughout. Just felt very relaxed and focused on enjoying the experience. I feel if I hadn't the competitive experience I'd have piled on the pressure.

Different goals now for 2026 but will leave that for the next thread!
