Smashing weather these days, its dry, might be a bit on the cool side but we are nearly half way through Oct. Great to get any outdoor activities done. Some folk are never happy unfortunately

I find it a little odd that when posters give the weather for their locations, other posters tell them 'to go out' or that they are 'miserable'.

I'm only commenting on my local weather not discussing my life style choices.

For example. It was another dull day on Saturday. I ran the 5km park run in Ballinamore at 9.30. Came back had a shower. Spent the rest of the morning in the garden. Afternoon consisted of playing football with the grandchildren. Feeding horses. Going for a swim and cooking dinner.

At the end of the day the weather was still dark and miserable.

Certainly no sun here in Meath, haven't seen the sun shine in about a week now.

Certainly feels abit colder this week but great to have the dry weather at this time of year. After a wet September a dry October is very welcome.

Its always the usual few who have negative things to say about people reporting ACTUAL weather from their location.

Lets just say the rain has been as scarce as the sun so thats a positive!

Certainly the coldest day in this dry, overcast , dull spell.

14⁰ Meath (feels less than that)

Ha, I wish 😃. Very welcome after the extended dry but dull spell.

Fabulous day today, got a nice walk in around the park in Tralee and great to have the windows in work open, even my fellow staff aren't giving out about the cold!

Got up to 17.1C and currently 16.8C at my site.

    Pic from 12.00 approx.

Loving this weather. No wind is great for the outdoors. Got some surfing in in donegal on Saturday and there wasn't even a sea breeze. It's just so nice not to have the howling wind outside for a change.

If this was summer I wouldn't be happy over the amount of cloud, no sun for a whole week but it's mid October so 10 days without wind and rain is a major plus for this time of the year.

I couldn't care less about the lack of sun at this time of year, what I'm loving is how mild, dry and calm it is. The leaves are so dry and crunchy as my 3 year old demonstrated by jumping on them!

He had the bubble machine on in garden at weekend and we couldn't get over calm it was, even in summer they usually blow all over the place in every direction🤣.

There is something so satisfying about walking on fallen leaves or even walking in a forest while the leaves are falling. Magical.

Each to his own. Some people like their autumns sunny while others like a more melancholy feel. I'd be the latter, though a sun worshipper in summer.

Yesterday I had the pleasure in being a car passenger from Tralee to Cork. On a fab [imo] light cloudedly overcast day. Which really brought out the range of foliage colours this time of year. Just lovely, as strong sun glare wouldn't give that visibility.

I think this current weather is just perfect. An antidote to a poor September and a sweet taste of mild autumn before winter and clocks change later this month.

Looks like its mild everywhere in this spell. Not here. The highest its been in the past few days is 11.5c. Not really mild. Forecast at 6 had 16c for Sligo tomorrow. By 9pm they had copped on and put 13c. That would be our warmest of past 7 days if it occurs. Breezier weather might help break up the clouds later in the week and we may touch 14 or 15c then.

I think the 25ºc off Cork is a misprint lol imagine that temperature at night mid October, still though mild enough in the south

Very dull this past 8 days now. I remember a May one year with 11 sunless days, a July which had nearly 3 weeks of little sun and a December with nearly none until the last week.

Got me wondering what is the longest any station on met.ie has recorded no sun . 1.4hours in Malin the past 7 days was low but skies broke there today so thats done.

This has to be one of the longest stretches without a second of sunshine that I've seen in Meath, 8 days without the faintest hint of sunshine and this is likely to go on a few more days. It's damp here too with drizzle/mist.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,663 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Low cloud and light drizzle here in tipperary this morning

Very damp here in Meath. Although I haven't seen the sun in days, this dry and calm weather has been a godsend to aid repairing cattle fences and dicing up fallen trees after the storm. The lawns even got a whizz. As they say 'it'll knock the arse out of October '.

Cork Airport had 16 consecutive sunless days between 23rd December 2018 and 7th January 2019.

Rosslare had 15 consecutive sunless days between 13th and 27th January 1987. That was a pretty notorious dull period for nearly the whole country. The period 15th-23rd January 1987 was noted as having virtually no sun at all for Ireland.

Earlier this year, we had the equal record dull period for Dublin in February of 12 consecutive sunless days.

No sun in the last week and I doubt we’ll see some before the Atlantic breaks through this weekend. Still ground has dried up reasonably well for mid Autumn

I've always thought that we must be one of the most positive nations on earth, it could rain for 50 weeks non stop, but two good weeks of weather would see plenty of people on here waxing lyrical about how great the weather is, and how lucky we are. I freely admit that I can't stand Winter, hate it getting dark at 4:30, and it's cold and miserable until the clocks go forward in March. Yes we don't have the ridiculously hot Summers or bitterly cold Winters that other countries have, but my god our climate is still hard work. But as you say, each to his own!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,660 ✭✭✭pauldry

We had a bit of sun this morning in Sligo so our sunless period ended. Still it quickly clouded up. Id say tomorrow will see isolated sun in random places again with coasts in West more favoured due to Easterly element in wind. Really could feel the cold due to the lack of sun and darkness.

So about the 16c prediction on weather yesterday that they tapered down to 13c at 9pm and up to 15c on late weather for ballisodare . In the end it was 12c so they were wrong in all their guesses. Still its getting warmer

    Sunday 9.8c

    Monday 11.2c

    Tuesday 12.1c

Oh I completely agree that our climate is very hard work and it will be the chief reason I will not end my days here. I plan on retiring to Spain once I'm in a position to do so, but that won't be for a while yet.

I hate Irish summers and you'll never find me talking them up or exaggerating the good spells which are rarely great. That said, the climate is so awful you have to really appreciate and make the most of the good spells. And in fairness we do get some nice spells, often in spring and autumn. The extended bad patches are what makes the good ones so special I think. And maybe that's why the Irish get almost giddy, whereas in other countries nobody bats an eye.

I actually love winter and I'm a fan of the dark. But dry, cold winters, not the non winters we get here. Same as non summers. Give me 30C in summer and 5C in winter and keep away the rain and I'll be happy out. Won't get the latter in Spain, but will get the former and more. 😀

Dreading the return of the Atlantic and making full use of its absence.

Didn't we have a similar period in the second half of July into August just gone as well? Maybe not 100% sunless but it was overwhelmingly dull and grey in Dublin

I wouldn't have thought the current period is particularly unusual when we live in what's probably amongst the cloudiest countries on the planet!

We had a record breaking dull second half of July but as you know yourself, it's extremely difficult to get a prolonged sunless period even with our lacklustre summers due solely to how long summer days are. Would need to look at a different definition to directly compare with that on an objective level.

From our limited number of sunshine recording stations, I haven't noted any particular streak of sunless days being that remarkable to date.
