Yeah those Armenian’s did better than I thought they would v Hungary. Lack of fire power seems the Armenians problem.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Think we've had our fair share of near misses to warrant a bit of luck going out way.

Could have been at WC 66. Came down to a one off game in a neutral venue but Ireland had to agree to the venue, London and Basel were discussed. FAI took a brown envelope from the Spanish and played it it in Paris Infront of a massive Spanish crowd and they won 1-0. Giles and Dunphy are still bitter about it. Not to mention what happened Eoin Hand in the USSR or Henrys handball.

That performance put Roy on the map. Diego Maradona was in the ground that night having just moved there and was utterly effusive in his praise for him in the Spanish press. He was all over that pitch.

think we were almost home and hosed going to into the last 2 games: needed a draw vs Spain at home or a win vs Northern Ireland away so we had effectively 2 bites of the cherry. We didn’t get either and still got through so I’d be a harsh enough impassive watcher of the Irish team but saying we didn’t deserve it kind of disregards how we made the group our bitch till we almost fcuked it up.

Did I read somewhere that the lads were on the lash before the Spain match in Dublin? Something about an eating contest the day or two before, organised by Jack.

no that was 2 years later in 1995 before a game at home to Austria that we lost 3-1

Scotland were heading for a solid 2-1 v Belarus . Commentator says “We will take it but no harm asking for a wee bit more”

I was thinking Irish soccer supporters would kill to have a team to have solid consistent wins. Nevermind asking for a “wee bit more”.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I find it hard to understand the overly critical opinions of last night . Majority thought we would be on the end of a big loss .

Also , anyone saying it was pathetic back to the wall stuff has no idea of how much organisation, communication and concentration it takes from a team to shut out one of the best teams in Portugal for 90+ minutes .

Were we a bit disappointing on the ball going the other way ? Absolutely, but we know we don’t have the quality of player so why expect it last night ?

All we could hope for was improvement, a good defensive display and players knowing and doing their jobs . We got that and with a bit more luck we’d have got a point

I am critical myself of the team recently like anyone , but to be critical of last night is just not being realistic about where we are in world football and a bit silly really

I don't see how the team can be criticised at all. Any team who can't go to Armenia and then win a game hardly belongs in any tournament. We aren't competitive at that level.

The players put in a shift even though their limitations were exposed throughout the entire game. They were well organised and it was a solid defensive display. Beyond that we have very little to offer.

Holding Portugal until the 90th minute is an achievement for this side.

So the Faroe Islands have back to back home wins against Montenegro and Czech Republic.

I'd be surprised if we could manage that currently.

Hopefully we can do something on Tuesday, it is hard to see given we seem to be pretty abject going forward at the minute.

It wasn't long ago the Scots were having similar horror results to us. A couple of solid players in the right positions can turn things around. McTominay would be a God for us.

some seem to think Molumby and Cullen should have dominated the midfield battle over Vitinha and Neves.

I am listening to the Scottish analysis. Some of the crowd booed they said. Jayus they don’t know how good they have it.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

All the Scottish players and management have admitted that they were shockingly poor in both games, despite picking up 6 points. Seems they, and the fans, want performances and not just results.

The Czechs are now having the "Armenia" moment we had last month. Whereas we were ranked about 50 places of Armenia, the Czech Republic are 97 spots ahead of the Faroes!

We could easily have won in Denmark and Spain, robbed really in Spain.

Funnily we deserved loss against Spain and we were bit poor against Denmark at home. Draw was fair result.

We beat the teams we had beat. Think we got very late goal in Albania if I remember.

(Just to remind us what could have been with Rice)

McTominay was born in England but qualifies for Scotland through his father, who is from Helensburgh.[55][56] McTominay attended training camps with the Scottish youth sides. In November 2017, McTominay told Scottish Football Association performance director Malky Mackay that he wanted to concentrate on securing a place in the Manchester United first team.[57]

Speaking in February 2018, club manager José Mourinho suggested that new Scotland manager Alex McLeish should select McTominay "because it looks like England is missing him".[58] McTominay pledged his future to Scotland and was selected in their squad for two friendlies in March

Scotland should been hammered other night. They were poor today. But they have 10 points and only behind Denmark on GD although Denmark have Belarus at home and Scots got go Greece. If Scotland can produce big one against Denmark they will qualify.

The performances have not matched their points total but I sure wish we could do that.

We be at best on 4 come Tuesday night. We need 2 results go our way now in couple nights. If we have just beat Hungary away now I take it. Very hard see us winning over there too even if we get lucky on road to that point.

McTominay wanted to play for Scotland (or so he says). Rice did not want to play for Ireland.

If a player eligible for 2 or more nations is good enough to play for all of them, he will choose the one he wants to play for. A great example of this is Evan Ferguson (who wouldn’t have been in every England squad but would certainly have had a few call ups and with a good season could have been on the plane to America next summer)

I'd be very surprised if we're still in come the last day. Even if it comes down to us having to beat Hungary, it seems way beyond what we're capable of doing (plus goals difference could require winning by 2 or more goals)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,785 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

No I agree in general. I think its massive ask and we probably require a result v Portugal.

If we don't win Tuesday and if Hungary get point out in Portugal its good night.

I'd say Portugal will be determined to wrap it up against Hungary. Best case for us is Portugal coming here with nothing to play for. Even then you'd need to assume we are capable of taking a point from a far superior but disinterested side who are not pushed about getting out of third gear. A very dubious assumption indeed.

If Portugal win on Tuesday and Ireland defeat Armenia it will mean Portugal qualify as group winners with two games to spare. This is a plausible scenario and the most likely.

That would leave Ireland and Hungary on 4 points.

Assuming Hungary beat Armenia in November and we lose to Portugal it would mean we'd be going to Budapest knowing a win of any sort would tie us on 7 points with Hungary. 2nd place would then be decided by Goal Difference.

A win on Tuesday is a must but it is also a must that we do so by 3 or 4 goals.

Also to note. Martinez has form for tinkering with his selections when qualification is wrapped up with some notable upsets. This could play into our hands in November.

I don't even think we'd need to win by 3 or 4 either… Hungary's defence has been really poor, they already conceded 3 at home to Portugal, so I could easily see them conceding something similar away in Portugal. Just get the win on Tuesday, keep things tight enough against Portugal in Dublin (obviously getting a point would be amazing, but even losing by 1 would be grand), and I think a win in Hungary would then be enough.

Hungary are currently 3 goals better off than us with both sides having still to play Armenia and Portugal. If we level the GD or even go +1 or +2 then it reduces the chances of having to go to Budapest needing to win by 2 or more goals - which would be a monumental task for this team.

2-0 against Armenia is the bare minimum we should expect on Tuesday. This team is more than capable of doing it.

For sure, it would be lovely to get a few - but if we get into a lead I wouldn't like to see us going chasing goals at the risk of getting caught. Get the win, and see what's there for us, but make bloody sure of the win first and foremost. I'd take 2-0 now very happily.
