Why is it so expensive for a first time driver over 50 to get an insurance quote?

So I have a friend who has being trying to get a quote on cars and a lot of insurance companies will not even insure him as he is over 50. Surely that should be a positive.

He has two of the 12 lessons left to do and does not want to take the driving test untill he knows he can get insured first.

What can he do. Would lying about his age to the insurance companies matter or make a difference say by 5 or 6 years. Will they know his age anyway from his learner permit/license details?

They won't insure him because he has no licence. He has a permit to learn.

Nothing to do with being over 50. My parents are both 71, driving EVs and have insurance no dearer than my own.

There's a start, a middle and an end to these things, licence and driving history comes before cheap insurance

I got a quote on a car for €800 and I only have a learner permit. He can't get one at all. Very odd.

First time insurance is expensive regardless of age. No Claims discounts take huge amounts of the premium, possibly have him insured on someone else's as a named driver and use that towards named driving experience, although he'd have been better doing this a few years ago. Some insurers accept named driving in lieu of a full NCB.

Try Outsurance, he might get a cheaper quote from them given that they claim they don't use a NCB type pricing model.

however I have heard that this also means that they can jack up premiums after a coupe of years and as the person won't have been accumulating NCB, they're stuck if trying to switch,

What do you consider expensive? I paid €3,000 for my first years insurance and that was after passing my test.

Its not me it's my friend. He was not getting any quotes.

My first was not for off that for my Trike. This years was cheaper though :) .

Get him to ring same insurance company, same car and see how he gets on

Yeah sure he will be seen as high risk but will get quotes.

Is he trying to get quotes in website or over the phone? There are certain cars I have been declined online quotes and said to call them, they obviously need further info

A Chrysler Ypsilon 1.4 petrol.

He is not going to get quotes online. Online quoting tools are designed for generic insurance categories that insurance companies deem low or medium risk. Your friend doesn't fall into any of those. He needs to pick up the phone and start ringing around the various companies and brokers.

There's a quote for a 50 year male driving an 08 VW Golf living in County Cork. No driving experience and learner permit less than a year.( It involves a box)

It's actually a Lancia, but that name is still toxic here. They are common enough in Italy.

I like them. It has a CD player lol. Whether I get one or the other car I have my eye on well it will come down to price and if there are any available.

Have to pass the test first. Nearly done it in March but I let doubt win :( .

If he lies about his age then he is not covered and might well be prosecuted for insurance fraud in the wake of an accident.

3 refusals in writing, he can go to FPSO and make a complaint. He might get one that way but be prepared to get a PFO kinda price.

Ye I had to go through the insurance ombudsman/Woman because it was a Women to get the insurance on my Trike the first time and I eventually got it with AXA :) .

He will need to get quotes over the phone, as generally there's not many first time quote requests for over 50's the online system won't handle it
