Last night was an excellent defensive performance, so well organised and gritty. I was very pleased with it. Actually thought we passed the ball really nicely in spells without ever actually looking threatening but it really helped to take the pressure off at times. Added to this we had a ref who clearly wanted to get Ronaldo’s jersey afterwards and it makes the performance all the more commendable.

People saying we were crap because they had all the ball and the shots etc is a ridiculously harsh rhetoric. Of course they had all the ball and the shots, look at the players they have, absolutely top class players in every position and the greatest goal scorer of all time up front.

If a team at our level gets a result against a team of their level it will take a heroic defensive effort and that’s what we got last night just we couldn’t quite hold out. And to be fair outside of the penalty which was a joke their goal was about their only clear cut chance outside of Silvas miss.

Now having said that in ways those sort of games are almost easier for us than Tuesdays will be against a similar level opponent when we need to force the issue and win the game. Last night we had to defend deep and be really organised and gritty and that suits us. Nathan Collins being a perfect example. Outstanding last night in that set up but looked dreadful in Yerevan when he had to play much higher up the pitch and defend much larger spaces.

But hopefully we get the job done Tuesday and it keeps our faint hopes alive.

Im just so tired of investing time into Irish football. Basically watching a team who have finished in the relegation zone every season for the last 10 years.

I actually logged off as believe it or not I'm off now to my club to bring my team out. Last year in management in the DDSL.10 years with my team. Brought from academy level. I'm looking forward to retirement 😀

Well aware an intercounty match is 35 minutes

Club matches is what I was talking about.

I'm guessing everyone who was posting last night on the Irish match never played an intercounty match in their lives

Will catch up with you on Tuesday 😆

I just don’t understand why Ireland can’t find some good players when there’s so much interest in soccer , sure isn’t there loads of money spent in the game.

very surprised by the performance last night. For me Ebosele was man of the match. its just a pity there was no one to cross the ball to when he tried. we really need to find strikers, ferguson isnt it, total passenger last night, for a big lad he is way too easily pushed off the ball. id rather have had callum robinson playing last night.

If they can do what we didn’t and win in Yerevan then they’ve earned second place, good luck to them.

Looking at the ridiculous penalty decision once more, refs and VAR officials should not be permitted to take viagra when reffing a Portugal game.

I don't mind Ronaldo, but the fawning over him from officials is ridiculous.

If the penalty was the other way around, would it have been given?

I'm delighted for the update on your unbelievably exciting life.

    P.s. I played county😅 I won't be here on Tuesday, I'll be working.

A terrible call I felt. Clearly hit O'Shea in the chest.

See FAI showing pictures of penalty safe.

We are no better then rugby lads now happy with this "moral victory"

We lost and not only lost were absolutely pathetic going forward and could not string 2 passes together when under any pressure.

But hey we saved a penalty, life's good. Its pathetic.

It should been 3 or 4 only for open goal miss and actually felt Portugal were well below average.

    We will struggle Tuesday

The few times he did cross he overhit it.

He is a very one trick pony player who Portugal had in their pocket.

'We are no better then rugby lads now happy with this "moral victory'

The rugby lads have been European champions 3 out of the last 8 years, 2018, 2023, 2024. Beating world powers like New Zealand, France, South Africa and England regularly. We should never demean another national sport.

Football in Ireland needs a major overhaul. Pulling down rugby for losing to one of the top 2 sides in a WC finals achieves nothing and is petty.

He’s limited, but he’s an out ball in a game like that with his pace and power he can get us up the pitch. Not many in the squad you can say that about

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,580 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

Sorry but they are not remotely comparable. There are about 10-12 nations who take rugby seriously. There are 6 teams in the European championship you are talking about, and no qualifying. Despite supposedly being the best team in the world at times, they have never got beyond a WC quarter final, again something they pretty much quality for by default.
Now compare the level of competition to football…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,122 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

they win trophies. Yeah it’s a much smaller sport but Ireland isn’t good enough at sport to cast espersions on teams that win trophies

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

Ok do it by percentages. We're in the top 10% of rugby teams. Where are we in football?? When has Ireland lost to the equivalent of Armenia in rugby in the past 25 years, in terms of World rankings?

We were never really good enough to get past a RWC QF until 2011. We lost to New Zealand by a hand under a ball at the try line in 2023. We played a brilliant style of rugby. Last night Portugal had 30 shots on goal to our 2. We couldn't execute a basic counter attack in the first half.

Absolutely no comparison is right. We can't play football, we can't pass at the level required, we have lower level players. The amount of feeling sorry here because people thought we somehow earned a draw. We were lucky Portugal took it easy and we only conceded one.

Man up to all posters trying to bring rugby into this, it has nothing to do with any other sport. Irish rugby has 50,000, across all grades, registered players, and competes with England with 800,000. We should be able to produce 15-20 footballers. Something wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,480 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

If we had 11 Eboseles we would be ok. He played really well, great control, pace and really stood up when needed. They can work on his crossing, he is only a young guy.

@ fullstop. Obefemi is another one who has lots of pace, something Ireland have never really had, well maybe Shane long was the last one but its a pity obafemi isnt even getting in squads anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,500 ✭✭✭jacool

I absolutely do not get why you put that precise photo in to that comment. People can spend their money as they see fit, paying to see LOI, EFL and their national team. They aren't responsible for the overall funding of the game in Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,480 ✭✭✭✭pgj2015

@ Oiche. You must not have seen the game last night? we lost away to a team 5th in the world rankings. And we played really well.

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

Also Ogbene seems to have lost a fair bit of form since previous Ireland games. I admit I wouldn't see much of him at club level.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,040 ✭✭✭happyoutscan

A very broad array of expectations with this Irish team.

Personally, I thought we did well as I was expecting a 3+ loss.

Not sure why some posters expect us to be anything more than what we actually are. Getting upset at an FAI picture is a little bit silly, labeling it 'pathetic' is nonsensical.

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

I don't agree that we played well. Very good defensively but you'd expect that with 15 behind the ball. We're so limited.

30 shots to 2 and all the other stats. Playing well is v Denmark in Copenhagen autumn 1992 v the European champions. Should have beaten Spain away that autumn too. That's playing football and threatening offensively. Just 2 examples. It's terrible the standards we set for playing well now.

he’s only just back after nearly a year out with a ruptured Achilles. Will just take a little time to get fully back up to speed. Thought he still did well enough though, particularly once he got shuffled to the right after Ebosele went off.

Fair enough. He's a favourite of mine in recent years. Tries to take people on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 12,580 ✭✭✭✭fullstop

By being fully professional you’re nearly already in the top 10% in rugby, so that’s a moot point.
Won’t go into the rest in detail, but it’s all well and good winning a few Six Nations when some of the other teams focus around World Cup cycles. We can beat them all in test match (friendlies) but can’t when the pressure is on in WC knockout.
I also never for a moment tried to suggest we were any good at football, we’re shite

That’s on Obafemi though. Doesn’t seem to have it between the ears, similar to Connolly, and his career is in free fall
