    A quick google.

1990 Irish presidential election - Wikipedia

    "Red Scare" tactics

The early and strong support amongst Fine Gael voters for Robinson alarmed the Fine Gael camp, who reacted by engaging in Red Scare tactics against Robinson rather than focusing on the favourite Lenihan. Immediately upon the confirmation that Currie was in the race, prominent members of Fine Gael, such as Jim Mitchell and Michael Noonan, suggested that Robinson would be the "acceptable face of Socialism in Ireland" and that a victory for Robinson would be a victory for the Workers' Party.

Members of Fianna Fáil would repeat similar accusations as the polls tightened and it became apparent that Robinson was a credible threat to Lenihan's campaign.

    ===

On 3 November, just days before voting was due to take place, cabinet minister Pádraig Flynn of Fianna Fáil made an appearance on the RTÉ Radio 1 show alongside Michael McDowell of the Progressive Democrats and Brendan Howlin of the Labour Party. During the segment, Flynn launched a personal attack on Mary Robinson, accusing her of "having a new-found interest in her family" as part of a new public persona introduced for the campaign.

An infuriated McDowell, whose party had been broadly sympathetic to Lenihan and Fianna Fáil until that moment, excoriated Flynn, immediately calling the remarks a "disgrace", called upon Flynn to withdraw them and told him to "learn some manners". Similarly, an incensed Howlin called the remarks typical of a Fianna Fáil campaign in which "no dirt was too awful, no smear too great"

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

That’s a bit of a cop-out. When a smear campaign benefits your own campaign, the decent thing to do is call it out - even if you weren’t personally involved. It was a former party member after all. Staying silent (or distancing yourself without condemning it) conveniently allows it to continue unchecked.

FF are counting on a re-election now. It's the only thing they can do other than openly back a rival.

I can almost say with certainty that the current **** getting flung at either candidate is emerging and getting amplified by FF

She was the minister that ensured people who were having a hard time powt Covid and during the energy crisis had a fair amount of extra financial help during that time .

She also ensured that primary school children are all getting hot lunches. A big plus as far as anyone dealing with child poverty is concerned !

She would not be my favourite but let's be fair here .

Now what has Catherine Connolly done, genuine question ? Sell her to a floating voter, real life stuff , besides saying she is wonderful , speaks well and is honest .

In fact the worst in that government was Labour's Joan Burton as Minister for Social Protection .

I voted for them and it was a real slap in the face when people were on their uppers .

I think she has more pressing matters like her own campaign to worry about

The election is over , some bookies have paid out. This bickering is pointless as a famous Governor once said.

I am talking about people affected after the crash when there was massive unemployment and a lot of people suffering .

The most unsympathetic person to be in that role in a time of crisis .

Give over Oscar. Set integrity aside when it’s inconvenient? Taking ten seconds to reject dirty tactics doesn’t derail a campaign - it shows leadership and character. Ignoring it just looks calculated, which anyone watching can see it is.

I can see you as an election campaign manager Liam 😊

Those two should be paying you for your advice !

What’s with all the “hurt” for Catherine Connolly? Never have I seen posters take criticism of a candidate so personally - Catherine Connolly is more than capable of speaking out in whatever way she determines about this matter-she doesn't need foot soldiers on a social media site to do it for her.

The “outrage” every time some normal aspect of a political election campaign emerges on this thread is actually laughable at this point.

Campaigns get dirty - ask Jim Gavin .

I have to say I'm quite bemused that some people genuinely believe there's some sort of massive conspiracy against Catherine Connolly involving the mainstream media.

Just because they asked tough questions of her based on her actions and statements.

The media that are apparently in bed with Government are the same media that also reported positive things about Catherine Connolly and completely sunk Jim Gavin, ruined his reputation, and put Micheal Martin in crisis mode.

Almost as if the media…..write things that they think the public will be interested in, and get them views, and are actually not some Government controlled monolith….

I don't think any of these stories landed in the way they anticipated though. The Eirigi story seems to have been something they felt was going to be a 'gamechanger' or turning point in the campaign, but all the indications are since that it just bounced off the general public and had zero impact on them.

I generally agree though a couple of questions this week were truly nonsensical and beyond the point being fair. Namely the hypothetical what-if scenario involving hiring a rapist and condemning her for being a barrister who performed the obligations of a barrister.

Given the fact that Ivan Yates openly suggested Heather Humphreys best chance of winning was to "smear" and also that two other ex-TD/MEP from the FG party were sharing an image of Dáil security rules on X which is believed to be AI generated it certainly is making people wonder.

If questions just don't have to be relevant anymore so long as they're "tough" then we might as well be asking Presidential candidates for their solution to the trolley problem or who was in the right in Saipan.

Don’t you remember Padraig Flynn’s ultra sexist and derogatory remarks to attempt to demean her as a woman and mother?
Look them up - another classic foot in mouth Flynn moment. Lenihan went down in flames after it.

No indeed . Neither does a MoSP chop chopping all over the place and ensuring as few as possible could avail of some sort of help when she had been screaming at the government about it for the previous number of years .

It was the most embarrassing and quite revealing episode in the Labour Party's history and think it will follow them for quite a while .

Almost as embarrassing as Pat Rabbitte's attempt at misplaced honesty over what is promised in an election .

That’s just a lazy excuse for poor behaviour. Saying "campaigns get dirty" shouldn’t be used to excuse it. That’s exactly the kind of attitude that turns people off politics and away from voting.

This was a former senior party figure openly encouraging smears against a rival candidate to a national audience. Pretending it’s just normal campaign behaviour is wilfully ignoring how corrosive that is to public trust.

If anything, people should be calling that out loudly. Heather Humphreys said nothing to distance herself from it - no condemnation at all.

You can be absolutely sure you will not see CC’s campaign resorting to that kind of behaviour. She debates on substance, not smears.

Yes. We can all have opinions and judgements of people .

But where there is a need for security there is nothing like a strong background check of someone's former life and criminal convictions to prove that those judgements are correct .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,011 ✭✭✭Homelander

    But they are relevant.

If someone feels it's appropriate to hire an ex-prisoner convicted on gun charges to work in Leinster house and advocate for their rehabilitation, it's not completely out of field to ask them other hypotheticals that test said judgement/opinion.

As I said, the media destroyed Jim Gavin. The same media were only delighted to share footage of Catherine Connolly showcasing her excellent soccer footwork that won her many fans.

There's no conspiracy, no collusion, no grand Government control room dictating the course of coverage. Just a media pushing anything they think the public will take interest in.

Hardly a shock the media would chose to give coverage to Ivan Yates commentary, why wouldn't they? He said something incredibly inflammatory.

The media also reported heavily on former and sitting FF members calling for Martin to be removed, claiming he can't lead the party into the next election, even saw one where he was called a dictator by sitting FF members.

All sides are getting it from the media, it would be absurd to think there's some vast sweeping collusion against Connolly.

Don't get me started on the misrepresentation of Rabbitte's remarks. You obviously are still falling for it years after it was shown to be fake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,975 ✭✭✭MFPM

There's loads of them, they're amusing and they do serve to illustrate how absurd much of the media framing has been - hopefully Harry and Pat know these are just jokes and don't try spin them!

Ivan Yates is not part of HH's campaign. He has as much relevance to it as Brolly does to CC's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,975 ✭✭✭MFPM

But he is FG and wears that badge proudly - there's no way FG were happy with that intervention, notwithstanding he's a bit of a bufoon.

FF have just went full FG

The party should have been finished after the crash but seems Micheal got them back in the game and then said we are now FG

I can tell there are older FF members horrified at this and my granny is one, this is FF backing a FG president and the other candidate isn't even a Shinner....

The victim mentality from Connolly’s supporters is quite something.

The “smears” towards Connolly have been questioning her own words and actions.

Yet the same week we’ve had Connolly supporters gleefully promoting a completely false story from the Ditch - which intentionally lies about the property in question to try and invent a smear.
