The Sky smart hybrid LNBs were discontinued before COVID iirc, they looked like a hanging brick.

That one in the picture looks like one of their replacement hybrids, possibly 2 fixed legacy outputs and 2 fixed wideband outputs. There should be an identifier on the LNB to indicate the wideband outputs.

It would be , the TV is 13 years old , released in 2012 I believe , and most of its software is going to be out of date. I doubt its had an update in years.

Its most likely working on a very old version of the freesat software.

Note: FTA means free to air broadcasts , certain channels on the Astra Satellite are not encrypted , so are FTA or free to air , any satellite box can receive them.

Freesat is a UK EPG service , so it takes these FTA channels , and puts them in a nice order with a 7 day EPG and a recording service that uses the CRID system. It also automatically retunes channels when they occasionally move.

Its usually very nice , its big problem here is no RTE, which some cannot live with , but otherwise its a very good service.

It wont be so nice or usable on your TV because your TV will be out of date software wise and probably full of bugs when it comes to trying to use the modern version of Freesat , there have been numerous changes over the years.

Smart TVs , if they dont develop a technical fault , usually " die" because they stop getting software updates and the smart features become unusable , in which case the best thing to do is get a firestick or one of the many other boxes , that will give you your smart features back. It wont help with making the Freesat Service on that TV usable though.

Also note: and this may well be the case , unless your TV was set up with the UK as the country and you have inserted a UK postcode , then you wont be getting the Freesat service , instead you will just be receiving FTA channels , which will be shotgun scattered all over a very patchy EPG. Freesat has a logo , if you dont see that then you are in FTA mode as opposed to Freesat mode , the logo is at the top of the Wiki page here …..

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freesat

If this is the case , then you would have to factory reset the TV and set up from scratch , making sure you set UK as country and insert a UK postcode. Any valid UK postcode will do , but note , regional variations of BBC and ITV depend on the postcode used , I usually pick London.

@andy1249 The freesat in that TV .. I have no intention of using. As you said its just too old and when I tried it it was slow clunky and the epg is .. unusable.

Thats why I want to replace the SKY Q box with a freesat box. We have established the lnb ( pics previous page ) is some sort of Sky hybrid, maybe 4 or 6 port, with 2 ports for Sky Q and 2 for "regular" freesat.

So the 2 cables in front room are attached to the sky Q box. To replace the sky Q box it seems I need a 4k freesat box that can use those 2 sky Q cables. Recommends that would work?

I tested the standard manhattan freesat box I have in the kitchen with both those cables in the front room .. i got "no signal" .. I assume thats because the cables are specifically for Sky Q??

Yip with regard streaming netflix etc I was thinking of that thomson box I linked in the OP.

For rte etc I reckon an internal ariel attached to back of that tv should do it.

Yes the SkyQ cables will work with the Freesat box. The box may auto detect the cable type, if not the setup menu has LNB options - wideband, universal and MDU (scr).

Regarding the indoor TV aerial, how good the reception is will depend on the Saorview signal strength/quality where you locate it.

Freesat EPG has had some variations over the years , but should have looked something like the picture attached. Is that what your EPG looked like , note the logo on top of the page !

The problem with freesat boxes is I wouldn't recommend any of them , you are far better off with an Enigma2 box.

Ive had the Humax 1000s and 1010s and they are all flaky , all of them have a motherboard problem that causes a fault with the internal hard drive being recognised , and the latest Arris box seems to have inherited that issue. Before buying , I recommend going through this thread on the box from avforums.

    https://www.avforums.com/threads/new-generation-freesat-stb-arris.2256339/page-122

I dumped them in favour of E2 Boxes as they were not reliable. I cannot honestly recommend any of them.

Since leaving Sky , whose boxes were also very flaky by the way , capacitors were always failing on the PSUs , Ive been through two Humax freesat boxes , a Tiviar Alpha Plus , and two Zgemma's ( budget chinese box ) , one with internal hard drive and one with a slot in the back. The Humax boxes failed with the motherboard problem , the Tiviar and Zgemmas failed with bad capacitors.

A few years ago , I dedided going cheap was a false economy and went with a UNICABLE II LNB and VU+ Duo 4K SE boxes running openvix , which have been rock solid. A big plus with these is there are no Electrolytic Capacitors inside the box , they are all contained within the power brick , which is a 12v PSU and easily replaced.

@andy1249 Re enigma boxes I think you mentioned octagon at some stage?

    https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/linux-enigma-2-receivers/octagon-sf8008-V3-supreme-twin-dvb-s2x-freesat

    And any of these?

    https://www.enigma2.net/%F0%9F%8F%86-top-10-enigma2-boxes-for-iptv-streaming-in-2025/

All of the above work with the sky Q cabling?

Btw Im in IT for decades as well as a muso ( guitar ) in bands for same time so no stranger to tweaking and noodling with kit.

About your epg pic. That is luxury in comparison to what I can get on that TV :D

The cabling is not the problem but the LNB which if not using SKY Q services again i would replace with the normal LNB for use with boxes.

I never went or could afford their services and even have a Sony Bravia with twin sat and 1 terrestrial feed and the sat drove me mad as could never find what i wanted quickly.

Bought a h7S years ago and down to 1 feed on sat and terrestrial and y splitter to feed tv so i can view on tv if box is recording on terrestrial which is handy.

Think my old sky dish has an octo on it as boxes all over the house and recording.

Just my thoughts and use my Sony for many streaming services YouTube and Prime.

On another note on other tvs are other aps bared from working to stop the bad ones from installing.

Discussion here about a different ancient Panasonic which also had problems with the Freesat EPG. The last contribution suggests a solution if there is a Shipping Condition option on the menu. I presume this means a Factory Reset.

    @greasepalm

"The cabling is not the problem but the LNB which if not using SKY Q services again i would replace with the normal LNB for use with boxes."

Thats something I was thinking of also, would need to engage a satellite dish installer guy to do that, to particularly align the new LNB? Plus these Freesat boxes regardless of compatibility with the SKY Q LNB or not are on the dear side anyway it seems. On the LNB thats there I have two "regular" ports as well as the two for the SKY Q box

Im wondering would the cash spent on a satellite guy to fit and setup a new LNB THEN buying a new freesat box end up more than just buying a Freesat box compatible with the existing SKY Q LNB?

Octagon S8008 extreme is a very good box. Takes an NVME hard drive stick.

I have one , but its configured for one terrestrial and one satellite tuner.

If your not bothered with RTE then a twin Sat configuration is fine for FTA. Autobouquetmaker ( ABM ) and its EPG grabbers will add anything missing form an official " Freesat" box.

Note that these boxes come with Define OS , and the way you install enigma2 such as openvix , is via the internet and a download option within Define OS , whatever you do, dont wipe define OS off the system , its very good.

The box has unlimited slots for loading OS images , only limited by the size of the hard drive you install.

NOTE: When I first started with these boxes , Channel 4 HD was not on the " Freesat" EPG due to squabbling over costs , and this has been the case 2 or 3 times since. Enigma 2 has no such issues , and you will always be able to get some channels that are NOT on the freesat EPG.

I see my other two boxes ( VU+ 4K Duo SE ) are still number one ! Not surprised , they are very good.

BIG NOTE: Non of these boxes work with the Sky Q wideband cables , those are unique to sky and the official freesat boxes.

They will only work with legacy hybrid connector lines or a UNICABLE II LNB.

For the VU+ DUO 4K SE box , you will only get the best out of it by have a UNICABLE II LNB , otherwise it just behaves like a Sky HD box.

Regarding your TV and its inability to get Freesat , not really surprising , a lot of changes happened around that time , for example iphone and pretty much everyone else switched from 32 bit software to 64 bit software , I squeezed as much life out of my iphone 4 as I could , but in the end it was no better than a Nokia , texts and calls only , as all the apps had stopped working. Thats the " Issue " with smart devices , once they stop getting updates , thats it , a slow death awaits.

That for me is the big difference between Apple and Android , Apple will support for up to 7 years , whereas Android , especially Samsung , will only update for a year or so , so whilst on any particular release cycle , the android is better specced than the iphone , with a year or two the iphone will have overtaken it due to the constant updates.

Thanks for your last post @andy1249 and clarifying this:

    BIG NOTE:

None of these boxes work with the Sky Q wideband cables , those are unique to sky and the official freesat boxes.

Re the Ovtagon at that link above it says:

Sky Satellite dish or Universal Satellite dish with a Universal or Hybrid LNB required.

Re hybrid does this mean it will work with the sky lnb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,357 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Possibly not. It probably means the legacy outputs of the hybrid LNB.

To avoid confusion that lnb in the pic above has 4 outputs, 2 are wideband, and 2 are universal outputs. The cables used are just normal coax sat cables. So you can have the manhattan box in one room using one cable. Then if you buy another box for other room you can disconnect the cable going to the wideband out and connect it to the other universal output. But you have 2 cables coming from the universal outputs already so its either spare and not in use or its near the tv.

Later Hybrid sky q lnb had 6 outputs ie 2 wideband and 4 universal.

Andy meant to say the SKY Q outputs not the cables.

If you dont want sky q in the future then you should get a Sky quad lnb with 4 outputs.

    here

    https://www.freetv.ie/quad-lnb/

The octagon has 2 tuners but you can disable one and have one feed.

    @swoofer

the 4 cables from the current LNB:

    LNB2.jpg

2 are going to the SKY Q box in the front room, front of house ( bungalow ).

1 is going to the Manhattan box in the Kitchen at the back of the house

1 is going to the main bedroom in extension at the back also BUT no TV hooked up to that, we never used it

So my options are KEEP the current LNB and buy a FREESAT 4K box that will work with the SKY Q ports OR replace the LNB with a "non sky" 4 port one and then use an Enigma2 type box as suggested by @andy1249 .. that OCTAGON SF8008 V3 SUPREME TWIN 4K for example - which seems to allow me to add Streaming apps like Netflix also

    https://www.world-of-satellite.co.uk/linux-enigma-2-receivers/octagon-sf8008-V3-supreme-twin-dvb-s2x-freesat

I dont think I would be able to replace the current LNB, would take a sat guy to do that I would imagine? Particularly to make sure the new LNB is aligned correctly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,941 ✭✭✭swoofer

Enigma2 boxes are cr*p for IPTV and you cant have plugins like netflix so avoid. These boxes are good for sport via iptv and if you really want one get no 3.

That thomson box is a better option for you. If you dont want to record can you re route cable from bedroom to TV room?

To get LNB changed could be pricey, can you say location roughly. Im clare.

That 4k box is £228.00 at amazon, 2 left free delivery with prime.

That Octagon is £150.0 but when it arrives you get stung for VAT at 23% and admin could push it to £200.00.

Best option 4k box and that thomson box.

    Thanks @swoofer

Im in Carrigaline ( pop. 20k or so ), Co Cork. Near the south coast, 15 mins away.

Yes that Thomson box - Its getting very good reviews. Many saying its a firestick alternative as it allows side loading.

I did think the LNB change would not be cheap and buying the Freesat 4K box that works with the SKY Q ports ( ?? ) would end up a cheaper one off. So no need re routing? Besides, re routing would be messy.

"Best option 4k box and that thomson box" - means NO messing with the dish, cables or LNB?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,536 ✭✭✭andy1249

Most boxes are lying when they say they can do Kodi , Netflix etc , or IPTV , with the exception of two , and even then there is a catch.

Octagon can do it through Define OS , but only through Define OS , you can load the usual apps , Netflix , disney , Amazon , etc.

For Enigma 2 , youve got to load an image into a slot ( lets face it , the only one worth bothering with is openvix ) and when you want to use that , you reboot the box into enigma , anything else you reboot back to define OS.

The one and only advantage of the NVME drive is rebooting is pretty fast.

VU+ Duo 4K SE is the same , but you have to boot between its Original OS ( VTi ) and Enigma 2 image. Also should note that its " Recovery Mode " only works with VTi , not with Enigma 2 images.

With both Octagon and VU+ , if you wipe the original OS in favour of enigma 2 with a USB stick , then all options for IPTV etc are gone.

Enigma 2 boxes should be looked at as FTA receivers only , dont expect them to do anything else and youll be fine.

IPTV is available as a system plugin on Openvix and seems well integrated .You can even go backward in the TV guide to play catch up. The VOD interface isn't amazing as it is all text based but it works.

I think the seamless integration of terrestrial, satellite and IPTV live channels makes it the best setup of all
