Unresponsive Kitchen Fitter

I've recently had a new kitchen installed, but there a few items that need to be finished off like lights, tiling, a couple of missing cabinet doors etc. I went through a wholesaler kitchen supplier and then hired a kitchen fitter separately. He's done some good work, but took a lot longer than he said he would. He put it down to issues with his van, as well as the kitchen needing more "custom" work than expected.

It's been 3 weeks since my countertop was installed (which would allow him to finish the rest of the work) and he has become very slow to respond. He keeps telling me that he will call over to finish the work soon, but then never does, even when he proposes a date. I was also on holidays for a week and thought he could do it while I was away, but then he told me he was waiting for me to be back to finish it, despite me giving him a key!

I've paid him for the work he's completed to date, but there is a balance for the remaining work. He also damaged one of my cabinet doors which he has to replace.

I'm very frustrated now because I have a half finished kitchen that shows no sign of getting done now. Am I best to cut my losses and find someone else to finish the work, or is this just how the industry is at the moment where carpenters are hard to get? I'm also worried that I will have to lump the cost of the damaged cabinet door. I have been polite to him to date as if I annoy him I expect he'll just walk away as he has nothing to really tie him to the work at the moment. I'm sure he has much better stuff to be working on!

There is a lesson here for other people, dont pay the balance until the snagging is done. (i see thats what you have done).

Contact him formally with a deadline and tell him you wont be paying the balance unless the snagging is done to your satisfaction. Usually its best to do in writing, so email, whats app etc - just have a record. Be reasonable but insist you need a firm date for completion. Tell him if its not done within say 4 weeks you will have to hire someone else to finish the job.

If he blanks you or a the deadline passes, use the remaining balance to pay someone else to clean up his mess.

Thanks for the advice. He eventually showed up, but extremely late. Do I have any recourse for reduced payment, or am I pushing my luck? I didn't raise a complaint with him as I didn't want to annoy him and he ends up not finishing the job at all!

Sounds like he's lost interest now that most of the job is done and there's little money left on the table. Unfortunately, that's pretty common in trades. Try giving him a polite but firm message setting a completion date in writing. If he doesn't respond, find someone else to finish it and deduct any extra cost from his remaining balance.
