Heather had to deal with Connolly hogging the headlines this week- the positive for her is that whilst some might have reinforced their support for Connolly as a result , she also lost some support I would estimate - for some now, Connolly is just too far left. But how many? Not many if the polls today are to be believed.

Heather needs to up her game and blow the other two out of the water in the RTÉ debate - I’m just not sure she will -she seems too cautious - you only do that when you’re well ahead - she’s now significantly behind

And sometimes deposits are held by unscrupulous landlords. Which one is Gavin, we won't know until he explains all. As it currently stands it's looking like he has something to hide.

Thought the pollsters reckoned undecided 31% were mainly veering towards Humphrey's and Gavin ?

That's what I got from Gavin Reilly's article up the thread .

Might end up very close with HH and CC in the finish with transfers etc.

in fairness as a personal preference I would too- I think it highly unusual that the other two hardly have a word of Irish . I know of an American who came here to work and study years ago - she had to have Irish for the job /course of study she went for (legal profession I think) - and she just learned it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,972 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Or hasn't had the legal advice he needs over the weekend to say anything one way or the other?

If he said anything definitive today he was admitting liability or apportioning blame .

Either way I will be waiting before I write him off .

Just as I am still waiting for CC to answer some of the questions before her . A calm assured answer does not equal an honest or straight answer .

She did not assure me that passing an ex con into Leinster House without garda clearance was either the right thing to do nor that she regretted it at all , which is more worrying .

And didn't Joe McHugh FFTD, when made Minister for the Gaeltacht, do an intensive course in Irish so as to get a grasp of it, and is now fluent.

If she had no interest 11 years ago I don't believe she's any gra now for the language.

I think a lot of people assumed Gavin would get a much greater share of the vote- his vote has essentially collapsed now - leaving very little room for transfers to Humphries - some of Gavins support may defect to Connolly - not that many but enough - but more than likely they may not turn out at all to vote - low voter turnout pretty much guarantees Connolly wins

That in itself would have been a better response than the one he gave today, ' it was tough for the family ', or words to that effect.

basic level like the vast majority of the population? All of what, 10 words…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,972 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Not with the huge number of undecideds , a third of those polled .

By the way I agree with you and @Fann Linn about the Irish language . They both need to go back and relearn/ gain some fluency . The fact that they haven't done so already is a poor show . It's not essential but definitely an asset .

Watching the debate from earlier today. Jaysus Jim Gavin's first answer was worse than woeful. He didn't answer the question at all but appeared so nervous than I thought he had been drinking!

Were there any comments here on Connolly's "looks"?

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I know most people can’t learn Irish in a few weeks- but like if I were in government I’d actually be mortified not being able to speak Irish and I’d so something about it - Heather had 11 years to do this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,576 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

So what proportion of the electorate over 35 do you reckon that would eliminate from ever running for President, 80%. 70%, 60%???

And that's just the ones in the Republic who 'learned' Irish in school before including any possible extension to NI.

There is nothing stopping anyone from learning the Irish language- except themselves - I count myself in that category btw - I have LC Irish and I’ve forgotten the vast majority of it- but if I wanted a particular job enough and Irish was required or at least expected or preferred by the people who have the power to put me in that role , I’d make it my business to learn it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,125 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Well, thankfully being able to speak Irish to any level is NOT a requirement for the role.

“Were there any comments here on Connolly's "looks"?”

Ah Cluedo Monopoly I never pegged you as a shallow person who would stoop that low - if CC wants to present as she does, who are we to comment - it’s what’s in her heart that counts - especially her compassion for all things Russian 🙃

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,576 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

I wasn't asking for a 'solution' I was asking for an estimate of those over 35 who'd have 'a basic level of Irish'.

Well if you're someone like me who spent from age 4 to age 18 'learning' the language and even spending the odd few weeks in the Gaeltacht yet couldn't speak basic Irish by age 19 it's a bit of a joke to say 'there's nothing stopping' you from learning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,890 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Jaysus HH's little line in Irish was just cringe. And then she said she is going to go to Gaeltacht 🙂. She was minister for the Gaeltacht and didn't bother! She is better than earlier in the week but she is still very weak. Gavin is getting worse...

The other two keep attacking CC because they are afraid of her.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I dont know about you but while i love the iriah language now i hated it in school. I have a hard time with english and for so.w reason i was forced to do two more languages. Iriah and german in school both of them were horrific i was never in trouble in any class except irish and german and i was always in trouvle in german and Irish.

I thibk that considering the job is being a representutive and head of state of ireland then learning iriah is important but just becasue Connolly learned it in school and Gavin didnt dosent mean she should be president. Heather humphries is the worst choice she said she was too tired to be a td so how cab she be a head of state 🙄

Didnt see any, most comments here alluded to her pro russian stance which is stronger than ever.

Well that's nonsense but believe what you want. Try searching her comments re Russia on the Oireachtas website. On record in the Dail.

How Irish was taught in the past in schools was horrendous - but that’s not to say you can’t relearn any language using modern learning and teaching methods

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,468 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Connolly has spoken about making the effort as an adult. They all did Irish at school I think, only one has made the effort to be fluent in it as adults.

This was an over payment not retention of a deposit. In my opinion it should have been paid at the time. If it wasn't it should be paid back now plus interest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 13,890 ✭✭✭✭Cluedo Monopoly

Why did Gavin just pull a piece of paper out of his ass ?? 😂😮

HH would tell Trump about our values 😂

    This is priceless stuff!

"Heather humphries is the worst choice she said she was too tired to be a td so how cab she be a head of state 🙄"

    BTW it's 'Humphreys'.

Presumably because as a TD you're at everyone's beck and call if you want to be re-elected, whereas being President you're not expected to fix Jimmy Joe's drainage problem and if he calls you can tell him 'feck off' as you're in for seven years and with any sense will then retire gracefully.

The only thing I can say about the Jim Gavin story re. the tenant is that the indo story mentioned he was banking with kbc and obviously kbc are now gone.

It's possible that he thinks he paid back but can't remember and can't get hands on old statements to be certain, so that's the delay. He obviously can't say he definitely did pay without receipts.

It happened to me a few months back that I got a letter from vet about non payment of visit from 2020. I was with kbc back then so had no easy way to check statements/etc, so had to wait until the Monday to ring the vet to clarify situation (it was a double charge, had been paid, all good). I was 99.999% certain I had no missed payments, but didn't have that absolute proof to confirm it.

It's possible that this is where Jim Gavin is at, but if he was wouldn't it be better to say so? Something like "I believe this was resolved back when it happened, but I need to check over old banking details to confirm which will take a few days. Once I have the info I'll provide it."

His half answers and dodging just make him look dodgy - possibly because he was or possibly because he doesn't know how to handle such a situation (proof again that a politician should run for politicians roles).

Oh and to whoever said Bertie should have run, look at the noise about €3k payment. Imagine what it would've been like going back over all of berties finances...

To try and claim he didn’t say ‘Israel had achieved its aims’ and that Connolly had wrongly accused hm. Made a complete hash of it as the presenter said, I heard you say it, and moved on.😁
