Agree with some of this, but given the fact that being attacked appears to have made Catherine Connolly stronger, would Heather Humphreys not be better off avoiding the negative stuff altogether? That's what Michael D. did in 2011. She's unlucky that Jim Gavin isn't strong or coherent enough to become her attack-dog and do the dirty work for her.

Timing of polling means impact or non-impact of CC’s dissident gun-toting assistant hasn’t been captured either.

Do we know this for definite? Not even the first stirrings of that controversy?

The story mentions it was captured as part of the poll.

"The findings this weekend also suggested Ms Connolly has suffered minimal damage after she defended her decision in 2018 to hire a woman convicted of firearm offences."

The tactic could involve going after CC, for the multitude of unforced errors, questioning her ability for the role.

Possible to go overboard with this IMO, "how can you possibly vote for this chancer?" is not usually a good line with genuinely undecided voters, as Kamala Harris discovered. Needs to draw attention to the stuff she embodies as a 'border Protestant'…

Most of it has become clearer since then with many reading around it and digesting the information. CC 's 'explanation ' of events is only being unpicked now so the effects may still be felt in the next poll .

Although Budget Day will give her a bounce .

Its possible, but i think the gap is oddly wide at this stage, between CC and HH. Humphreys also needs to keep in mind too, that some of the poll may have been collected before the current news-cycle. We dont yet know the effect of said news cycle, or the earlier unforced errors from the Connolly camp. Im not suggesting that Humphreys spend the entire campaign going after CC - but certainly in debates, she could stand to attack Connolly on some of the more contentious topics.

CC is on top for now, and she could hold the lead, and win the election. But we must always keep in mind the Connolly factor. Will CC manage to get through the next 3 odd weeks, without getting into any more scrapes? Possibly? She is less than a week and a half in and she has managed to walk into minefields on many topics. For now, IMHO, the gap is wide enough so as to force HH into challenging directly.

    Thats my feeling anyway

Also, are the scrapes she's getting into only serving to make her stronger? I remember a similar thing with Jeremy Corbyn. They got him in the end, but there was a period where it felt like he was defying the usual laws of politics.

Yea no doubt, but I reckon the HH campaign is more tactically literate than her opposition in this case. I would imagine they have campaign strategists who will have a plan of attack. Not too fierce, and certainly not offensive. But firm, and designed to cause impact, followed by a positive point on her own credentials and experience.

    Something like:

Criticizing CC on the Germany comments, and then a quick pivot to the cooperation that FG enjoyed with their European Partners during the bexit debacle.

Discussing the diplomatic damage that the CC's re-arming comments caused, and then a quick pivot to how well placed Ireland is, to behave as a positive diplomatic player.

Its a criticism, followed by a 'Humphreys Looks Presidential' moment

Again, just spitballing here, its all just my opinions

Catherine would answer her calmy as she always does, and then ask about her animal rights abuser issue or her wanting to have diasabled people ranked depending on how disabled they are

CC is a very smart woman, and wont be bullied just like we seen in the last Dail Term when she was less CC

Heather ‘eh ing’ her way through a criticism isn’t going to work IMO

Playing into Connolly’s hands is not the way.

My point was an awful lot more than budgetary but that seems to be beyond your grasp.

Yea look theres no doubting that Connolly has the lead, and would seem to be favourite for now. However we dont yet know how many more international mine fields she is intent on rambling into.

The candidate who would appear to be finished is Gavin. Honestly, as far as he is concerned id say its over IMHO.

Its between Connolly and Humphreys for the Aras. I firmly believe HH has a more tactically agile team behind her campaign. And HH will come for CC at some point, and she will come hard, she has to.

If CC weathers it and lands some hits of her own, she will win. And she will deserve to at that stage. Im not doubting that. Just because I dont feel she is suitable for the position, doesnt mean I am oblivious to what could happen.

If CC wins il take the win for the Irish Left Wing, and hope we maintain momentum going into the next few elections. But i remain dubious on selecting left wing activist types to front campaigns.

Thats my opinion. for whatever its worth

There won't be panic on the FG side, probably in the FF camp. 3 weeks is a good stretch, HH needs to improve her own vote by a few % and then also hover up the no 2's of JG. I think they'll mainly leave it to the media to keep following the CC story. Gavin could possibly go for her tomorrow, esp on the issue of the woman concerned attending the Eirigi meeting around the time she was employed by CC. Gavin may feel that he needs to make an impact and this would be an option.

Yes . A bit of time yet to go and Gavin's not out yet . Let's see how he performs tomorrow . Polls are not the election and the don't knows will be watching the papers and the debates before deciding , or they wouldn't have bothered answering .

If it comes to a choice between Connolly and Humphrey's it's Connolly for me but with reservations about some of the more controversial opinions she has expressed .

Yea its a hail mary pass for Gavin or its over. Honestly he has nothing to lose. But i just dont see him as capable of mounting a successful comeback. I know a few Fianna Fail-ers, and they have gone from a position of cautious optimism, to being fairly agnostic and downbeat on his chances.

Im looking forward to the debate tomorrow anyway

Micky Martin will be getting a delivery of a pipe and a pair of slippers before Christmas. Imagine fukking over your whole political party and hanging your hat on that dope.

Or it could be a choreographed FG good cop/FF bad cop strategy, if FF think Gavin has no chance now and they need to help HH however they can, even if it knocks another couple of points off Gavin for offering nothing but negativity……

What time is the live debate tomorrow?

Even if Gavin got rid of the nerves when he is talking. He is too nice.

When I came home Friday. Callan’s kicks was on the radio. Mimicking each candidate. Even the mimicked CC sounded the best. And Gavin was made to sound like the worst. Not finishing his “Sen-te-ces”. HH mocked for saying nothing much in the previous debate.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

HH only needs to be asked again about her previous time in govt and she's fcuked. She couldn't answer questions coherently in any of her one to one's to date or last week's debate. She's no Robinson, McAleese or Micky D, and if the worst CC can be asked about is an ex prisoner recommended by FF hierarchy, well then she's home and hosed imo.

It will be interesting to see if Connolly is allowed to speak without interruption.

Listening to it now on RTE podcasts - LMFAO its quality! Not usually a fan of Callan TBH, but given the topic, this is top notch!!! Cheers for that

That's another problem they'll have. How do you interrupt someone so polite, considered and softly spoken, without making yourself look obscenely rude?

If he goes for Catherine Connolly attack dog style then he'll be chewed up and spit out live on air, it won't be pretty. He'll turn himself into the joke of the election, the man who wandered into a debate from a GAA pitch with complete unfounded belief he could dismantle seasoned politicians on complex political matters.

He should focus on his strengths as a non-political, community figure with positive campaigning. The more he gets dragged into the political arena with soundbytes, jabs at opponents and Clinton thumbs the more he looks out of place and the more it damages him IMO.
