Jim looks like M Martin ,even the hand movements 😱

Agreed more flow to CC seems well prepared/knowledgeable best delivery of the three. Plus the fact she is so quietly spoken helps make it look like she is harangued if she is interrupted.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Three people with nothing to offer the role of President. Poor speakers trying to huff and puff through the questions.

And to think that Fianna Fail could not find a better candidate among it's thousands of members than this guy!

I really don't know why Jim got involved in this.

45 minutes gone and Catherine hasn't been asked about Sinn Fein

RTE wouldn't allow that carry on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭mykrodot

Catherine Connolly is clearly pro immigration, she has mentioned is an awful lot tonight. Pro open borders, saying that there are more displaced people in the World now than ever before. That means bring them here, they are "fleeing war" according to Connolly and I am glad Cuddihy contradicted her on that saying "not all are fleeing war".

People are crying out for immigration controls in this country, Connolly supports even more of it.

Sinn Fein are backing her, the largest party on the island, can't see a problem with it.

Gavin - was asked an awkward question for him. His former player McCauley being anti NFL in CP due to military links. Gavin wisely focused on GAA/CP and the economy.

Connolly - turned it into Israel/Gaza/Ukraine genocide - and taking the “blinkers off”. She had a go at Gavin. For his previous comments about “military objectives”. Rattled Gavin.

HH - gave a strong response going on about Gaza recognition. But seemed unsure if occupied territories bill will be worthwhile.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

You will have no issue with Heather being asked about Michael Lowry, as he's on record as saying he and his supporters will be backing her

    Gavin is terrible!

Don’t think any of them will have convinced anyone outside of their existing support. Format hasn’t helped

I like Cuddihy on the radio, but he’s been poor tonight. Treating it like a 3-way interview instead of a debate.

Agree there, she should take the cynical grin off her face though.

James should stop shaking his fist

HH should ditch the expression ‘very important’

Not particularly inspiring stuff from any of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,128 ✭✭✭harryharry25

Jim absolutely rattled when Catherine asked him when did he think that Israel had met it's military objectives in Gaza, was it after 20k dead, 30k, 40k?

    Best question of the night

Humphries is like one of those Dana style candidates who never worked in politics. Delivery is terrible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,651 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

All the parties of the left are backing her, and I wouldn't be surprised with Lowry backing HH, they're both singing off the same hymn sheet in relation to Govt arithmetic in Dail Eireann.

Don't support Catherine Connolly but credit where it's due she's miles ahead.

Gavin very unconvincing but Heather is absolutely desperate.

All in all I'd call it very grim viewing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,996 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

She made it clear earlier that she was an independent candidate therefore distancing herself from any party. She did thank any party that supported or nominated her.

You would think HH a woman who sat in cabinet for many years and has done endless interviews on radio and tv, would be more prepared

Seems like she thought il take Marieads spot now she's ill and il walk this by just saying **** all and putting my name on the ballot

    Hardly inspiring overall.

I didn’t twig that on Connolly though. She smiles when she politely disagrees or knows she has a good point coming.
Not sure how you change that habit at her age.

The more Gavin talks the more damage he is doing for the undecided voter. Going on about NE inner city Dublin a good few times. That seems very niche to me. When Cuddihy cut him off from going on about task forces etc he had little else to say.

HH - not saying much but her slow pace of speech is limiting any damage.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

A disaster for those that can't get houses? Is she for real??

Gavin is a poor speaker, and lacks political experience. Even when he has good points, he struggles to get them across. He clearly attended the Michael Martin school for hand gestures.

Connolly is definitely the best spoken, but has some bizarre takes (pro triple lock / anti US/Russia veto). I'd be concerned she'd embarrass us on the national stage with some of her interesting takes…

Humphrey's really hasn't contributed much. Every answer starts with "Yea well…" and descends into a ramble.

    None are presidential material…

CC just so much more thoughtful and composed, but I think a lot of voters would think she is too controversial in her views for a president.

I’d fear the public like HH as a well-meaning granny that says bad things are wrong and there should be more resources for everything and end every line of questioning with a smile.

JG is not coming across well but I do prefer him to HH. I think he would be a good president but perhaps his communication style will lose him a lot of votes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,580 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

It was an odd way of saying it is not a complete disaster nationally.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,651 ✭✭✭Fann Linn

Exactly, can't see myself voting for any of the above, including Gavin, and saying that as a Dublin GAA season ticket holder. He should never have got involved with MM and FF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,580 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I think Gavin would have fared better as independent. He couldn’t have been accused of backing any FF mistakes then.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,190 ✭✭✭✭Brendan Bendar

Yes James is much more of a one-to-one person.

All his good GAA work is circling the drain in my opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,580 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

    Salary question

Gavin - wants full whack - one term

HH- copying Higgins giving up pension, but only one term

CC - will take the salary but will decide what to with it later apparently she is on “the record” about it already.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This kinda sums it up for me: CC miles ahead of the other two in terms of delivery and keeping it together while answering... But she's only leading by default as the other two aren't great.

But it is the first night of it... Plenty of road yet.
