That precedes the war in Ukraine. I dont interpret what CC said as confined to arms for Israel. The US supplies 70% of Israeli arms imports, the UK 2% though it includes parts for the F35, and Germany was supply around 30%. Spain has announced an arms embargo and Germany and the UK has restricted arms exports recently.

I am leaning towards HH at the moment because I havent heard any policies from Gavin, and I prefer FFs greater openness to security cooperation.

Neutrality worked for Ireland in WW2 but we were a less tempting target then. We were practically a third world country. In contrast, Scandinavian countries were neutral and were over run. Denmark was taken without a shot being fired almost. The Dutch were neutral as was Belgium, and they were occupied anyway. Neutrality is not a magic bullet. It doesnt guarantee you won't be invaded.

Sounds like they're taking a leaf out of US policy.

Russia is doing it to try to conquer Ukraine.

How does CC expect Ukraine to defend itself without arms production?

Heather Humphreys is so wooden and stilted.

Its so clear she has had some training to soften her accent as well.

    Jim is stiff.

    What an uninspiring trio

Round 1 to CC : she was the most relaxed and natural speaking to camera.

They're all so poor. It really is a bad reflection on the country that these are the "best" 3 that could be come up with.

Ceasefire and negotiation.Ukraine will end up with what they would have had last year or the year before. Just - no. Inevitable - yes.

    Debate time so offline.

Jim gavin looks like he's breaking the news that we have invaded another country

And we're off on Gaza again.

Who bloody cares! This is Ireland's presidential election, not Palestine's.

The victims deserve sympathy on BOTH sides but ffs, they should be focused on Ireland's issues here.

Heather claiming herself as the "compassionate" candidate is an interesting one given she wanted to means test people with disabilities and supports blood sports.

CC has intelligence and opinions. Probably too much for her own good. The other 2 are shallow enough puppets.

What's an Irish president going to do about Gaza? Every country in Europe needs to up their defence,we can't depend on the US.

Catherine Connolly was going to be my vote before this I admit...but she is really the only decent option I can see. Intelligent, has principles and is a strong experienced politician.

No idea what FF doing with picking Jim Gavin very little relevant experience and a pretty poor and stilted speaker, having to look at his notes already.

Heather...absolutely useless can't think on her feet at all. I am guessing she will repeat the same buzz words over and over and not be tripped up.

    GI Jim shite again.

You're right. What is Ireland going to do about it - nothing, it's not our fight and we'll have no say in whatever outcome is finally reached.

It shouldn't be discussed on this particular debate to the level it is.

No evidence of the former, she is ranting on about the military-industrial complex.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,204 ✭✭✭HBC08

    Jim fairly schooled CC there.

How do you negotiate with Putin when he repeatedly refused to meet Zelensky? Premature negotiations will reward Putin for his aggression and the wanton destruction of a peaceful neighbour.

Gavin and HH made good point about how Russia is the aggressor, and without the German arms, thousands would have been killed a few days ago on the drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.

CC is an effective speaker, but sophistry isn't really addressing the practicalities on Ukraine in my opinion.

Saying neutrality has an intrinsic value, as if it's a magic word that will end the war simply by fine words about it, is daft. But some will buy it.

All social protection payments should be means tested.

Its preposterous that billions each year are handed over to families and individuals, irrespective of their means.

I'd be far more in favour of having more money available for those disabled people that need intensive care and high tech facilities and adaptations than giving it out willy nilly to all and sundry.

Jim, one trick pony. Very comfortable talking about landmines🙈

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,387 ✭✭✭✭McDermotX

    Stop saying military-industrial complex, Catherine

If I want to listen to someone speaking in circles, I'd be listening to Gavin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,527 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Jim Gavin has been to the same media training as Micheal Martin clearly with the pointy fist thing...

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

Is this not the Irish President. Drones in Ukraine?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,527 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

Practically as you can say very little but our current president has spoke out incredibly and used his platform as best he can.

Weirdly Connolly spoke best on the Defense Forces.

If only someone would tell her to stop using stupid student politics terms like "military industrial complex"
