I don’t disagree this could be a top 8 squad. But assuming the ambition is top 4 or better than there’s very few players who are slam dunks to be that level.

Bruno is the only one nailed on. And he’s likely to leave next summer.

Cunha and Mbuemo in theory should be, but we’ve seen better players flop here. It’s very early days and neither have started on fire.

No other player in the squad would make it near the top 4 sides in the league. So you’re just left hoping young ones like Mainoo and Yoro can get there. Sesko, who the hell knows but he looks absolutely awful so far.

Confident none of the remaining players in the squad will be part of a united 11 that makes top 4.

Edit: Amad maybe too. Still a lot to prove. Very inconsistent.

Sure, but thats a very different thing to clearing out the deadwood.

That is just the natural evolution of going from not competing, to competing.

You steady the ship and get back up to top 6. Then you add a few players and improve the quality. Then you do it again, and again until you win.

So what if the squad today won't win the league, winning the league isn't the goal yet. Getting back into the chasing pack is the goal. If the goal is top 4 immediately then INEOS are idiots.

Clearing out the deadwood is getting rid of the factors that will actively stop you making progression. United have nearly done that, a new manager can easily make progression with the squad currently assembled.

I agree it might be crazy but that was definitely the goal for the year. To be fair the money that has been spent, we should have more bona fide elite players.

    You spend €50m & 200k a week on a CB

€35m on a LB. €80m on a striker. €75m on a striker. €60m on a CDM all within 2 years and none of them are close to the level needed for top 4. It’s unforgivable.

I think you’re defining deadwood as toxicity. I’m defining it as players who will never be good enough for the level you want to get to. Whether they need to go now, or next year, you already know they have to go pretty soon despite being recently signed.

    wrong thread.

Who did Ten Hag clear out that needed to go? He barely made a dent. With the exception of that clown Maguire, and probably Dalot/Shaw (can't get rid of everyone in one window) Amorim has actually done really well in getting rid of the wasters and players who are levels below what's required.

I know Amorim looks to be done but Bayindir in goals as essentially first choice for the season is absolute madness. He's an ongoing liability. People saying he kept United in it today with some of his saves, I think any decent keeper makes the same saves. He was poor for all 3 Brentford goals today if you ask me.

That and the midfield issues will remain a huge headache for whoever gets the job next.

Pogba, Lingard, Martial, Ronaldo (Remember his lack of pressing was the cause of all our problems), De Gea (remember our inability to play out from the keeper was all our problems), Matic,

Problem is he replaced that deadwood with the next round of deader wood. Onana, Ugarte, Hojlund etc.

Reuben has to go……..it’s sooner rather than later for me….. new man in before Sun’lun.

    Adios Reuben

    Adeus, Brendan.

It's the little details, like not being able to adjust a formation.

Wanted it to work but seems times up for Amorim.

Hes a good manager off the pitch with media etc but on the pitch, nope.

He's cementing his own coffin the way its going on.

Said it before but a 4-2-3-1 would really suit this team

Palace up to 2nd now after beating Liverpool. You'd hope Utd are thinking about Glasner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,409 ✭✭✭caviardreams

Even if Bruno had scored the penalty I genuinely don't think we'd have won. Time for change definitely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 391 ✭✭osullic

Given that what exactly would be the appeal for Glasner?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,554 ✭✭✭fergiesfolly

They'd really want to sell the hell out of the job to convince a coach who's just beaten and unbeaten Liverpool to join a club who can't beat an underperforming Brentford

It’s amazing how standards have slipped. We had De Gea who despite his flaws is a talented keeper and we now have Bayindir who looks like he will cost us a goal or two every single game. I was never a big Henderson fan but at least he’s a solid goalkeeper. Same story across the pitch. The much derided Martial was in a different league to Zirkzee. And so on…

No thanks, great manager but our players clearly struggle with 3 atb.

He was reportedly annoyed at the Palace board in the Summer re transfer budgets and they lost Eze to Arsenal, Guehi nearly to Liverpool.

Regardless of how shyte we are, United will still be a big draw for most. Mbeumo and Sesko in the summer case in point.

He’s won a trophy with Palace and won the Europa with Frankfurt, Premier League ‘proven’ - he’d be an excellent choice.

I've been thinking more on this. If Amorim goes within the next few weeks, which I suspect he will, then the pressure on the next appointment will be huge. They have used up too much capital on 'high potential' gambles with Amorim, so the next appointment is very likely to be someone who is currently excelling in the PL (similar thought process behind the signings of Cunha and Mbuemo) because we can have confidence that their tactics work at least to some degree in the PL. Whether their tactics can be scaled up to a PL/CL winning contender is another question, but at least the floor should be a lot higher than Amorim's gameplan. Unless they can prize Enrique away from PSG mid season (highly unlikely but not impossible - he has expressed strong interest in managing in the PL before and has already hit his zenith at PSG) then it'll be Glasner or Iraola. Outside chance of Howe but only if his contract allows for a reasonable compensation package.

I suppose the question now is does Ruben walk or wait to be sacked?

I know he has threatened to resign a few times, but do you really leave with a few million on the table?

Ineos need to pull the trigger this weekend. Glazner was already favorite for the job so go for him if 5 atb is the way the brains trust want to go

The stat of barely 1 point per game since he got here. Relegation form.

I was hoping against hope that things would change but there is no hope left now. He has to go ASAP. And terminate Bayindir's contract while we're at it. He cannot football.

The big question mark I'd have over the likes of Glasner and Iraola is that proving you can manage in the PL is not the same as proving you can manage United.

Even in our current moribund state, it's one of the big 3 jobs in world football, and probably the most difficult of those 3 (a turnip could win the Bundesliga with Bayern and Real are basically a state-sponsored team). The pressure is not comparable to any other club in England.

You need someone who is not only a competent coach but a big personality. Arguably the coaching element is secondary, Fergie did very little coaching he just hired good assistants. He might have hired Amorim as an assistant if he was still boss.

I can’t see him walking away without a payout. It would be incredibly foolish. The grand gesture of doing so would be forgotten about within days but he won’t ever forget leaving that money on the table.

Result aside, let's be honest here, it was a disgrace that it took nearly 6 minutes for VAR to conjure up a reason not to give the red card and delay the penalty by so much. It was a slam dunk penalty and red card, 20 seconds was all they should have needed. That doesn't excuse Bruno but the ref amd VAR made a mess of it.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,468 ✭✭✭FrankN1

Seems to be like he doesn't enjoy the job, obviously with these results and pressure. Seems to me that he's half hoping for them to sack him and one side wants to turn it around

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,961 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Sunderland up to 3rd place now. Another good win for them this evening

They will have no fear taking on this sorry United side

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,237 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

Maybe that was true in the past but we finished 15 last year and Amorin not only kept his job but was fully backed.

Artera is under serious pressure, every game. Pep has the expectation of City and having to deal with a squad of superstars all wanting to play all the time.

Slot has got the pressure of Liverpool. Because its going great there is no negative but go on a losing run and see the pressure build.

Utd job is almost pressure free. Simply avoid relegation and that seems to be enough.

LvG and Mourinho who are big name proven managers couldn't turn this sinking ship around. Whoever is the next manager has a huge job on their hands and might think they have nothing to lose. Bring back success and you're a genius. Flop and sure the club is a mess and nobody can get it back go its glory days. Reputation still intact.
