They should honour the J seat during rebooking or reinstate the voucher for later use

if you cancel or change yourself it’s voided

Was it an Avios reward or a free flights through the BOI credit card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭user060916

Should definitely have a free bag, often it's not shown online and a few times I've had to pay and do a chargeback (flying from France)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

Be sure to add the frequent flyer number before doing check in that can help if you are Silver

I've see the website say no carry on bag, but the boarding card which appears says yes

All reward flights are 10kg + 20/23kg checked and thats on the EI site, if you are boarding at DUB/SNN/ORK/LHR won't be a problem flying for elsewhere bring the confirmation email printed

Interesting stat in their marketing email today - 21,139 reward flights "taken" ( they may mean booked) to date in 2025. Not sure why I thought it'd be a lot less than that.

Really poor value when I looked at a UK flight in the Aer Club app today (paying with Avios on the AL website os even worse).

Flights are €120 to pay all in cash.

I can can pay with 9k points and they still want €50 for taxes and charges. Means 9k avios are only worth €70 ?

Using Avios for EI flights is usually poor value if you manage to find a redemption opportunity at all giving the significant blackout dates. Maybe transatlantic in Business but in Europe you often are better off paying cash.

The best usage is to move them to BA or some other Avios Carrier and use it there.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 7,349 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

True and thats before you factor in if AL are even competitive on the route you're looking at.

Whether its Avios or Revpoints, why is ireland so **** when it comes to this stuff.

Points are generally best used for upgrade on a long haul, short flights are generally best paid for.

Meanwhile, a good offer if you live in the US

Apply for an Aer Lingus Visa Signature® Credit Card to earn a limited time Welcome Bonus Offer of 100,000 Avios by spending $7,500 on purchases within the first 6 months of account opening

Meanwhile, years and years of spending Rather A Lot on an Aercard, plus my flights, plus some eStores claims and - going back long enough ago - Supervalu and Electric Ireland via Supervalu - I have about 100k Avios in total!

Got the email about the US credit card

Was nice of them to email me showing what I could have ...

    A very Bullseye moment

There must be very few who haven’t taken up all the mileage credit card offers in the states and consequently can take up new offers like that one

I’m guessing it’s target audience in the states is tiny as USA resident aer club members would be tiny,it’s not a very enticing frequent flyer badge to have there given no domestic U.S flights,no benefits domestically etc

You think that's bad! Here's what I found.

Few months ago was looking at using 32k avois on flights to US. With the pints they wanted €1300+.

Without using the poibta the flights were €1050. So I was paying 250 more and losing all my points.

The only difference was the flights with points included a check-in bag each way which is like €160. It was a 4 day trip so we had need for a check in bag.

Best to always check the cost with and without avios as its crazy that you can be paying more with points

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,526 ✭✭✭Blut2

Using them to get flights outright is usually a bad deal, using them for upgrades is a lot better in terms of euro value per avio redeemed.

Though obviously a bit harder to justify unless you've got a lot of miles in the bank.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

Avios flights are also cancellable up to 24 hours before travel for a refund of points and charges less a small fee applies, this can be very helpful as you get a checked and carry on bag as well.

Key value is you are flying somewhere were prices has short up, e.g. flying to Berlin week of the marathon at that point points are extremely good value.

I see what you mean now about avios being bad value sometimes, I have just over 14k points and am looking at going to New York- it's 26,000 points plus €250 taxes and charges. Or as I don't have enough points i can get the return flight for 13k points plus 720 in taxes and charges.

To book the flight directly is around €395 return so I'll be doing that instead. How does using points for an upgrade work though, that's something I might use in the future when the points have built up a bit more?

Also regarding the credit card 2 free return European flights, is it possible to book 3 people on the same booking and just pay for one or would I be better off booking 2 people with the free flights and a standard booking for the 3rd person? (Which would ideally be me so i still get the points and tier credits)

Agree, they’re really not much use on Aer Lingus in general unless you use them in the ‘sweet spots’ (usually around the time of events, Canary Islands, and upgrades) or can get loads of them (hundreds of thousands) and use them for business class travel in partner airlines, particularly Qatar Airlines

I think the problem is that these currencies are really most useful in the US, where massive credit card interchange fees subsidise huge giveaways of points and loyalty perks that really can make a difference. If you can get 100k points for signing up, and a few points per dollar spent, plus free baggage etc, this becomes an interesting proposition. If you’re stuck spending €25,000 on an Irish Aer Credit credit to get a mere 6250 points, it’s barely worth the effort

On Aer Lingus, best case scenario I get about 1.6c of value per point, but more typically 1.1c. That means, to me, 6.250 Avios are only worth about 80€. It’s not bad if they're ‘free’. It’s definitely not worth the startling amount of spend to obtain them though, especially when, even when you have the points, it doesn’t guarantee you can use them (upgrades are very restricted, min 60 day purchase window for 99% of tickets, and regular sales mean cash tickets are usually pretty cheap on EI anyway)

if you box clever, stay flexible, plan ahead though, you can get some outsize value, but you’ll always be held back by an inability to earn enough miles here for it to worth getting excited about.

I've previously saved a fortune using avios for canary island flights at busy times so there's always that option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,273 ✭✭✭PopTarts

If you cancel a reward flight booking (Avios Points) are you charged anything cancellation fee?

I know you get your points returned and lose taxes paid (€10 in this case) but the email says:

Cancellation/Amend fee for passenger with Id: xxxx €42.50

    Service fee for passenger: €15

I won’t be charged €57.50 will I? Do they ever do this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,883 ✭✭✭pureza

If you pay in full with avios,a reward flight saver, there’s no loss except the nominal pound or two associated with it

    BA has that option

    Not sure about EI

Just wondering in any of ye have noticed that they the majority of flights for 2026 are coming up as sold out via the Rewards Flights section. Heathrow seems to be the only one available.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 7,349 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sheep Shagger

Only problem is AL can be very expensive compared to Ryanair on certain routes so you could end up paying over the odds to fly AL to use avios, sort of false economy.

THey can be worthwhile, you just have to be careful.

Same here. System is probably just shagged like it always is.

Quick plug for the credit card. I've booked my first choice flights 3 years in a row now. All to the Canaries from Dublin. Based on what I just paid today for next summer (€52 taxes + 2 x 20KG bags for €140 = €192) for 2 return flights and taking into account that I paid €585 last summer for a 3rd seat on the same journey then I reckon I've saved myself around (€585 x 2 = €1170 - €192) €978.

We go to the same place pretty much every year for holidays so this is what I would have been booking anyway. I recognise that it won't work out as easily for everyone.

I submitted the request via email on Tuesday and got a confirmation yesterday that the seats were available. I then had three days to avail of the booking.

Phone call today took 43 minutes between holding and booking but the lady couldn't have been nicer. I believe that booking the seats (free) and the baggage today works out cheaper than coming back in a few months to do it.

Having a lot of trouble with the Aer Lingus website at the moment. Checked in last night but website says we aren't checked in. The app says we are. I wanted to print out the boarding passes, but can't now.

they’re now charging £40 in Heathrow to change onto an earlier flight even if you’re Silver/Platinum/Concierge according to a pal of mine who tried this morning. Anyone see where they’ve announced this change or is it a clueless staff member?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 992 ✭✭✭Pete123456

sounds like a clueless staff member - unless the internal policy has changed they were always quite happy to pack up the earlier flights with anyone wanting to leave.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭goingnowhere

Either way Concierge are entitled to both

    1. Waive of change fees
    2. Travel earlier

Sliver and Platinum does not entitle you to a free change to an earlier flight unless its a plus fare or greater "Standby for earlier flight"

LHR has always been pragmatic about the rules and will fill any available seats to release capacity for later which is key to keeping things moving when delays and misconnects occur

I've occasionally seen check-in staff them turn down customer requests to move to earlier flights. When I asked about 6 months ago, the check-in agent told me that they only allow AerClub elites and Plus or higher and they ask anyone else to go to the ticket desk to work out a price.

I've never seen them care in the lounge though, presumably because, if you're in the lounge, you'll be quite likely to either have a flexible ticket or be an elite anyway.

Keen to know if there's a change in policy though. It's one of the most valuable (albeit unpublished) benefits of status IMHO.
