    The game is changed.

look, I know MLMD's political talk will always be treated differently, but trying to make the 'gamechanger' comment anymore than a bit of bullish promotion similar to what any party would say is a bit hilarious if not already tedious.

Arragh, cop out. If any party leader said “Game changer” you expect - Something new vibrant, unknown fresh.
You yourself predicted a former GAA president as the SF candidate.

While I will probably go for Connolly I certainly wouldn’t buy a car off Mary Lou. One “careful lady owner” could mean something entirely different.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

In 2018, FF and FG endorsed Higgins and did not run their own candidates.

SF had begun to shift to the centre and Ni Riada could just as easily have been a Labour candidate in that respect. It performed well in 2011 when its candidate got more than twice the votes of the FG candidate.

The shift towards SF happened in the last few weeks of the election campaign. By that time, the selection contests were over and all parties had chosen their candidates. FG and FF arguably selected too many while SF selected too few.

A lot of FF and FG supporters believed that FF and FG would never go into government together. In 2020, they did. Now, FF and FG are inextricably linked in the minds of voters in that a vote for FG is a vote for FF.

This transfer effect is what FG is hoping for with Humphreys. The best outcome for SF, short of Connolly winning, would be Humphreys being beaten into third place with her transfers getting Gavin over the line. It would allow SF to depict FG as Labour 2.0 (incapable of being the senior party in a government). FF would continue to take FG support and seats. It would be easier for SF to fight a single FFish party.

FG Labour 2.0? Never thought I would see that way of thinking? Surely SF want to eventually be a new Labour centre left with new added Republican flavours?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    Pithy analysis from the IT

What does the choice of Connolly tell us about Sinn Féin?

It’s hard to escape the conclusion that the party backed her because it could not come up with a better idea. Connolly has, after all, been in the field for two months now.

McDonald was seemingly under some pressure to run herself, but once she ruled that out the party was confronted by its lack of a Plan B. Backing Connolly looks more like Plan C.

That doesn’t mean it can’t work out. If Connolly wins, it might certainly be a game changer.

But for Sinn Féin, it is not a strategy that is coming from a position of strength. Rather the opposite.

So according to RTE News- some of SF wanted to support HH- so really this is chocolate teapot support- it means sweet FA- Sinn Fein don’t have a clue who they want to be when they grow up- in the meantime they’re prostituting themselves to whoever will smile back at them

Think of it as prioritising. SF's main opponent is FF. FF needs FG to form a government.

Labour is a shadow of what it was in the past. Going into government with FG might have played well for the older Labour supporters (Kelly etc) but there is also a younger segment that voted to endorse Connolly. Labour abandoned the Left and centre Left and SF moved in. FF shifted to the Right with FG.SF does not appear to want to be Labour. It wants to take Labour seats.

Labour also has its relevancy problem in that the SocDems endorsing Connolly made it seem like the SocDems were the senior party despite them having the same number of seats.

SF picked Connolly months ago, read between the lines. Mary Lou was their only option in the party and knew she couldn't win it. She never wanted it, shes wants into government. Backing Connolly makes sense when they cannot support a FG or FF candidate.

What it gives Connolly is a cash and people injection that she badly needs. Connolly will not bash Gavin or Humphreys, but you can bet SF will. Gavin for his lack of any political experience and Humphreys for being part of a government that has failed at every level.

I want an interviewer to ask Humphreys and Gavin one simple question - "Do you think the FF/FG government has failed in terms of housing or health?"

What's the alternative? Sinn Féin and a coalition of the alphabet soup? Good luck with that.

Downplay it all you want- it was a pathetic display of disorganisation coupled with in-house fighting - you do know there are a number of senior SF members who wanted to support HH?

That demographic, who are the lowest of the low, are so over represented on Facebook and X. Yet in any election in Ireland they receive about 1-2% of the vote. Atrocious spelling, grammar and ability to express themselves goes with the territory.

Would "unbridled enthusiasm**" be a fair and accurate description of the expressions on O'Neill and Doherty's faces ?

SF today are saying they want to "get the government out". Aside from the fact we are barely 10 months from the last election that party today has implicitly acknowledged that they had no hope of winning even a presidential election. Quite at odds with the dictatorial demands about the govt having to get out.

It’s their usual hot air- it’s just stinks like a very bad fart today given the hype Mary Lou from Orwell Road Dublin instigated earlier this week - far from the far left she came -

SF supporters will generally follow their Dear Leader, but I can imagine their old school core voters who are UI first and foremost scratching their heads. If a UI is their priority, then Humphries is the obvious choice now.

If SF had someone palatable for the ROI electorate, there would have been no slow hand clap leading today.

Those with “ahem’ “political” experience are too tied to the past. And those of younger generations are too young. There is a vacuum there for the more discerning ROI electorate. Which is a different kettle of fish to that of NI. They accept anyone with SF branding up there.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Word on the street is that they thought they had Jarlith Burns in the bag, but he backed out at the last minute. I am sure it will come out over the next few days or weeks.

If SF had ran Burns, they would have been in with a serious shout in winning. But Burns left them down last minute, so they resorted to the default position of backing Connolly. Which just shows you what a farce this all was.

SF could have come out at the start and said they were putting country over party and were going to back CC.

Instead they waited and waited, tried to find anyone who they could put up that might have half a chance.

When that failed they finally decided to back CC and put out the argument it was about building a coalition to win the next General Election. No way would they want to be in government with pbp.

Ok listen very carefully sunshine. If you call somebody I respect as having "unkempt grey hair", I absolutely have the right and obligation to challenge that. 100%. It was nasty. It is misogynistic plain and simple and it would be remiss of me not to address it. She is a barrister, psychologist and TD. The majority of TDs in the last Dail felt she was talented enough to be the first female leas cheann ceamhairle and yet you are calling her "looney" today. She also sat on the PAC and was chair of the Irish Language committee. Her work with the mother and baby home survivors was exemplary and most people don't even know the half of it.

So stick my criticism of your "unkempt grey hair" comment in your pipe and smoke it. Stop being a cry baby and stop calling my single post on the matter bullying/stalking. You actually replied to a single post I made 3 times yesterday because I clearly struck a nerve. It's your problem that you don't like her and I couldn't care less who you vote for but it's 2025 and I would expect a man to have more respect for the way they describe a credible female presidential candidate. You could call your anonymous little vendetta against Connolly as online bullying in fact.

I said "we're done" on this yesterday but you keep replying to me. I was correct.

Burns ruled himself out months ago. Nonsense talk to say it was last minute

The usuals losing the plot over SF backing Catherine is very funny. The usual FF/FG journalists and commentators won't be able to ask Catherine about the Ra or will they?

You have stalked me over 3 different thread on this site in the last few weeks -dropping into a thread purely to abuse me - you did that last night on the other presidential thread - you said nothing about the subject at hand - you jumped in specifically to abuse me - so less of the lectures matey

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Aurelian

Thats exactly what they'll be able to do now. You are being supported by SF therefore do you agree with their stance on x,y,z ?

Nonsense. I have been in both presidential threads for months replying on all sorts. I made my point very clear on your "unkempt grey hair" and "If she can’t make an effort to up her game" comments but keep making nasty comments if you feel you must. I will do what I must too. What was the 3rd thread?
