I thought flashing imaginary cards was an automatic yellow. Why isn’t Haaland booked there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭Ninthlife

I was wondering the same and its been shown in replays several times and not once mentioned by commentary

I hate to see it. I really don't know why it isn't, when it is to be when a manager does it.

    Good goal by Rashford

helped by schar being out of it. Not making that change has cost Newcastle.

MEGA - Make Éire Great Again

Benfica lose at home to Quarabag, their first defeat of the season, so they sack their manager and bring in the specialist in getting fired, Jose Mourinho. I'm not sure if he's an upgrade.

That Rashford fella suddenly looks handy.

Newcastle getting destroyed here. Their fans gone quiet as usual when they go behind.

I only saw the red card for Napoli.

I thought it was very harsh, the guy made a real genuine attempt to get the ball and was only an inch from making a great tackle.

I think maybe var could have called it as yellow instead, and doesnt ruin the game. I think refs are too quick to flash reds now, and it really makes the game useless from then on as a spectacle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,035 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

being an inch from making a good tackle doesn’t make it a good tackle. It was a clear red and there would have been lads queuing up to castigate the ref if he was let off with a yellow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,931 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Yip, probably true.

But it wasn't like it was a pull back, last man job. Or a cynical chop down. He made a genuine attempt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,035 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

But youre saying that like it’s relevant. It would be relevant if it was in the penalty area because of the no double punishment law that came in a few years back.

outside the box, if you foul in any form as there last man it’s an automatic red

Some great games this week it has to be said. Personally I really like the new format and enjoyed it last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,931 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Its certainly better than the old format, that was very stale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭ledwithhedwith

Jaysis absolutely hate the new format, zero jeopardy for ages. 24 out of 36 through is a joke.

Some good games so far, but yeah, when Atleti came back and made it 2-2 last night against Liverpool, I can't say I was all that massively bothered. We know a draw would've probably been grand with so many other opportunities to make the top 8, and it's almost hard to miss out on top 24.

I think i'd have preferred the same rejigged 'Swiss League' setup, but with just 6 games instead of 8.

Yea like its increased variety and big games but just the lack of jeopardy and randomness of who you will face after makes the group fairly uninteresting for me. Yea 6 and less go through would be cool, I like the only playing teams the once tbf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,063 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Yeah I still think the issue with this format is the 8 games, keeping it at 6 would suit better and it would mean the group stage isn't split into 6 games before Christmas and then a 6 week break before we resume to play the final 2.

And top 16 only go through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,793 ✭✭✭randd1

I wouldn't mind seeing a sin-bin introduced for a last man tackle like that.

There's a difference between a genuine attempt to win the ball and a deliberate take down.

If you bring in a sin bin they'll all get that.

A minor change this year which I don't think has been mentioned is that the Top 4 from the league retain 'second-leg home advantage' in the quarter-finals if they make it that far. And the Top 2 keep that advantage for the semi-finals.
So no more draws for Home/Away. Last year the advantage only applied to the Rounds of 24 and 16.

I think it's a good change (though I'd have one quibble - if say #15 or #16 beats #1 or #2 then they gain the advantage for further rounds. I think it'd be better if it fell to the next remaining seed).

This would make it much more exciting imo although I do like the home advantage rule introduced but we need more chaos.

Only two matches of any interest there. Barca v PSG and Dortmund v Athletic club and unfortunately they are on the same day at the same time by the looks of things.
